Today’s video is about my my coming out story! I’m so happy I’m at a point in my life where I can be fully open about my sexuality and share my story with you. Hopefully this helps other people that feel stuck with their sexuality and feel stuck in the closet…

I am 35 and I am from Taiwan. My Taiwanese parents are conservative. When I came out to them at like 17, they was like "We would never accept you in this family." With years going by, I came to realize that I don't need anyone's permission to be who I really am. My parents would not accept me, it's neither my parents' fault nor my fault.

I came out as gay at the age of 15 in 1977 and i can tell you it was hard at that time so be your true self and live your life for you always and forever. You will find the tribe that wants to run with you on your terms.

Well the hate and everything else in that time was harder than it is now, but it is till bad now. The notation that some think it is so easy is fooling, blind themselves. Things as people still hate, judgment to your skin, ethnicity, disability still goes on.

Young man, let me congratulate you for being so bold and brave. As a 54 year old black man, my coming out wasn't as easy as yours, but the trauma was just as real. I am a PK (preacher's kid) so just think about what you shared with us, and multiply that by 30. I was thrown out at 13, but I survived. Yes I was attacked, physically and sexually, but I survived. But however, my best coming out ever, was when I came out to my son, and his response, You are still my dad.

We survive and make our own families out of friends. I am sorry that your family wouldn't accept you. Look at it as their loss, not yours. But and however serve the same purpose. So use one or the other. But can be used in more ways to simplify a sentence. Another English faux pas people make is using before and prior together. Just use one of the two.

You are a sweet young man!! You are fortunate that all your family finally came around and accepted you for who you are. I am 69 and was outed by a niece who saw me coming out of the gay bar one night. My family is also religious and have not been accepting of me. I was closeted my whole life, until I got outed, because I knew I would not be accepted if any of my family and friends found out. I wasn't wrong about that. Now I am in an open and affirming church, making new friends who are accepting of me, and basically starting a whole new life. You were wise to come out when you are still young. The act of coming out never sat well with me because I always asked myself why must we go through this awkward ordeal and straight people don’t have to, so how my family found out was when I started dating my boyfriend at the time and they’ve known ever since. I told my parents on Mother's day 3 years ago. I'm Black, White, Mexican, and Native American plus come from a deeply religious household. When I came out my mom told me she and my dad would never stop loving me because I make MY life not them but to live it well, doing what is good. I have had traumatizing experiences through my life but I never let them hold me down and kept up the good fight. Now I have a boyfriend who is taking care of me while I'm paying some debt because he knows that once that is done we can really start living a better life. The rest of my family was pretty accepting as I literally told them "I'm I any different from before I told you all?" And they left it alone and it's been good ever since. Have a great life man as you only get the one.

Thanks for sharing your story. It is so important. I did some of the same things and tried to pray it away and said I was BI. Luckily, my family was pretty good with it and accepting when some are not...but it is still so scary!!! My BF was so scared of coming out when he was younger, he got married and started a family until he couldn't take it anymore. He thought he could fight it and was doing what his family wanted him to do. He was living his life for others and not for himself, which is so sad. Sadly, there are many people out there who do that!!! So good for being brave and sharing your story! It will help others!

Sometimes parents are extremely positive, affirming, and compassionate. Ideally, all parents should make one thing clear as they learn and process: that no matter what, they love you unconditionally. As for me my coming out to my parents was very difficult because my Father is a Pastor. One thing about they love me. So stay strong and keep believing in you.

I am 62 and am encouraged that kids can come to terms with this earlier in their lives than my generation did. I was not able to address these issues until I was in my twenties because of the way the culture was in the seventies. So many more resources out there for people to help them now. The interesting irony for me watching your video here is that I went through my struggles in coming to terms with being gay right behind you, as my family lived on Coronado Island in the 1980s. Very good coming out story. It reminds me of being young and not sure. Fortunately I was never in the closet. I also told my parents that I could not change who I was. It is so brave of you Vincent to share your story. I came out in 2018, age 28 but it was something I always knew and my parents figured me out. I can relate to how you shared that you first said you were bi. It's a safe choice in the early part of finding personal bravery. The difficult path of removing the glass ceiling to just say "I'm gay" to family. I definitely started to figure out my preferences in 2018 and in 2019, I started making more friends with gay Latinos. My friends in Cuba that I still am friends with and have gone to visit now 4x. It's amazing on the element of surprise because I never had visiting Latin America and the Caribbean in my thoughts prior. I also wanted to say Love, Simon was my similar story since I never was with anyone but after having some life experiences of putting myself out there, I had to give life advice to some high school students where I taught. For anyone, you get to decide what you say, where you say, how much you say, and you set the boundaries on what you are comfortable with. There is no set timeline on coming out. I wrote my dad a 2 page letter saying I wanted to talk and I deliberately left my house for a day to go to the movies and to the mall. I asked my dad to write me a letter back and to put it in my room. The next day after having lunch and walking out in the park, I came out. Always choose bravery, have your trusted supports, and do not let the glass ceiling of hiding or pretending hold you back. You are brave Vincent. I would give you a hug and probably text you to catch up. You are a good man and again, thank you for being courageous to share your story. -Eric

Not only does it get better for individuals but it’s getting better for us in society. This young man’s story compared to mine, coming out in the 1980s, is very different. All the painful struggle we went through to raise awareness is worth it when I see the younger generations ability to create a life of proud dignity. I came across your video here and wanted to post that I think you are a very brave young man. I also noticed you are in the Navy. I joined the Navy when I was 19 and this was back before even don't ask, don't tell was in effect. During recruitment, they asked and expected me to tell! I lied because I wanted to serve my country. I also lived in fear throughout my time in the service because in those days, if they found out a sailor is gay, they actually took them to jail while they gave them a dishonorable discharge. Of course, this was also before the Internet and so it was a very lonely existence. It makes me so happy to see a sailor who is able to not only be out and proud but also be able to post videos talking about their coming out experience. God bless you, 'shipmate'!

The Mormon part took me out because that's something my mom would do. I came out to my brother and friends and they all took it well. I'm not sure if I'd let my parents know, but it still is a journey I'm happy your friends and family ended up supporting YOU!

My situation is so awkward I came out to my parents at 22 years old in 2022. They promised to "understand" the situation instead they're always forcing me to pray with them every day against "homosexual thoughts" and honestly it's killing me. They even pray for me to find a husband and all these heterosexual expectations they put on me. I regret coming out to them but not to my friends who have been really supportive. My extended family are more supportive which I wished I got the same energy from my actual family.

LOVE this video. Your parents' differing reactions remind me of my experience with coming out to them - & I was similarly surprised. It was SO worth it though, as my mother eventually came around to the reality. Both of my parents have passed-on, now, with my mother having gone 10 years, before. A great coming out video. Totally candid about your feelings, and so positive. At the same time, LGBT folks need to understand that coming out means that the friend or family member will need to process the news and that can take time. They have to come to terms with being a parent, sibling, etc. of a gay family member. Coming out can be only about getting a burden off your shoulders, but it can also be an act of love, sensitivity and patience.

Every gay person has to search their own heart and decide whether to live their truth or continue in the lie that their family and society wants to make them feel better. Speaking of Religion; I don't know if you know this but you have a new "Ministry". By making people comfortable with their sexuality and letting them know that It's ok; it will get better over time. I'm 52 yrs old and I know men in their 60's and 70's who are still struggling with who they really are. They have wives; grown children and grand children, but they're gay. They live double lives. Till this day I still feel left out when it comes to family, never really had the chance to come out to them since I am always avoided or a non factor because I guess I am the middle child. It’s kind of frustrating because all I wanted was to be loved. Now I look for that love in other people. Thankfully I have friends that are there for me and support me. Im Jamaican too. I told my mom at 17 years old im 25 now. I didnt tell my dad because i was nervous as well. My mom first blamed herself, and called herself a failure and cried. I told my sister a day after and she cried (because she was afraid of how others would treat me). My mom began coming to me about “dreams” and “people” she hear and always some scenario about a young gay guy that had some bad situation. Then we went through the phase of her blaming the devil and how im comfortable with sin. Then the phase of accepting it but dont talk about it. Then now where I can openly share my thoughts on a guy and she doesnt cringe (although i rarely do that). And the key is to live your life and keep winning. Your family loves you once you show them that you are the same person and killing it by succeeding and having a level head they will come around guarantee. Thats what happen to me. Just a perspective only my immediate (mom and sister, and brother in law) knows. My cousins i drop hints and screw with them all the time as a humorous person, good feeling they know but never had that convo. And then friends and coworkers. I keep it as an as needed to know basis not ashame but still my own business. So best of luck but think it through dont do anything rash when you may be cut off. But please be open to meeting people your age and your own happiness. You dont have to tell people till you want but grow to love yourself and let people worthy in. And be safe!

It's better if you come out to your parents when you aren't financially dependent on them and live separately from them. If you do it and you think they will take the news badly, especially when you are dependent on them and it goes wrong, it can be a detriment to your life.

I don’t know where you live but don’t do anything towards your family until you are on your own feet and have decent friends to support you. You don’t owe your family anything especially if you already now feel you can not trust in their unconditional love and intelligence to be able to step out of their comfort zone. If protestantism is involved it might get even worse. Don’t push yourself. You don’t need to be ‘open’ to ‘closed of’ people. Take care.
