A game is creative. There is not only the story, but the designs, the movements, the animations, the fluency of the game, the dialogue, the way you progress through the game, the innovation etc. It's a lot more techy than most art forms, but its an art form is its own right.

i personally believe that games are art mainly because they can have certain lasting impacts on people in the same way some art does not all of them but some, and the impacts of some (very few) games can even be profound. the events in a video game and sometimes even the gameplay its self can evoke sadness, joy, a sense of triumph or even convey a message just like traditional art.

Art is all about conveying ideas and emotions. If it's more immersive, then it's better art. If a game makes you forget about the challenge of 'winning' the game, because you are completely immersed as though you were the main character, then I would consider it art (not that I can pull a title out of the back of my head- I haven't played many games compared to serious gamers). It's the same thing as a movie- if you forget you're watching a movie because you're immersed, it's good art.

I've always seen the inner mechanics of a game to be artful. The control style and balancing mechanics of a fighting game, or the netcode that handles multiplayer and the way each weapon works in a game like counterstrike. It's mathematical art in action. The elegance of variables and subroutines that create the experience and feel of a particular game.

@radicalgarbage02 'simple' algebra can be used to describe extremely complex systems. Also, keep in mind that the algebraic functions are one thing, but their implementation is completely different. When I used to make my own little games, I would have to take into account the fact that all of those variables have to work with one another without creating errors or game breaking bugs and glitches. I now do a video series exploring what can happen when those errors or bugs are purposely used.

TJdoeslife I guess you can look at it all objectional and say that art is supposed to decorate a room, to ornament it. this is a very platonic view though. Games are art to me, they can combine the following -A Story like in a Book or a Movie. -an OST that implies someone composed something to undertone the emotion you are supposed to feel in that situation of the game. -Acting (through voice acting or creating animations for models) -Visual Art, because for a game you need color to make the canvas a masterpiece, people are hired to draw or create assets for textures for THAT wall or THAT ceilling. -Sculpting Because a blocky world with nothing it it is dull, it needs props of complex shapes. All this together is a process of creativity, and if that's not the living and breathing definition of art, then i am flabberghasted and need to re evaluate what i believe in, because my government and i are not eye-to-eye with that.

I agree with what TJ says about video games in this video. They are definitely not art in the same way movies are, they're more about creating a unique experience for the player, combining the narrative and environment with interactivity. Games like Modern Warfare are definitely not art, but when you look at a game like Bioshock, which is an extremely unique experience, then it starts to get there.

Most definitely! The fact that 'films' like Norbit are in the same medium of true films like Brazil or Citizen Kane does not prohibit said medium from attaining the status of 'art.' I think that video games can be art, if done in the right way. Take the Fallout-series for example (which I recall you've said that you played and enjoyed). Except for Fallout 3 which is a little more linear than the others, the emphasis is not to defeat tough enemies and prove your skill. It is about interacting with the world; witness the consequences of your actions and choices, and how the story progresses accordingly. In my opinion that is art.

You should consider videogames art. There are many artists who create contraptions in which the interaction with the viewer is key. If you look at some "Interactive Artwork" the works you will find that in many ways the artwork does not exist without participation. (example: Boundary functions by Scott Snibbe) In the end, an artist creates a work to be "experienced" by others, which can be through seeing, smelling, tasting, hearing, touching. I see videogames as a mix of Interactive Art/Movies.
@OrlandoAponte13 жыл бұрын
Like every other form of entertainment, video games have the potential to be extremely artistic. To say otherwise is stupid. Video games combine the elements of music, storytelling, and theatrics which are all art forms. Anyone who has played the game Chrono Cross would agree. I'm a-artistic, word is a label you can apply but has no cognitive meaning; word has uses (social, emotional, economic) but communicating a state of affairs in the world isn't one of them. The term is too vague to really 'mean' anything, people can apply it to anything they want. I prefer talking about what kind of person this will tend to elicit what kind of reaction from - a lot of chemistry is "tends to" so while not all people of type X will react identically, a useful trend is possible.
@WorthlessWinner13 жыл бұрын
Just as the product of a chemical reaction depends on the reactants and conditions but if they're identical the product will be the same the product of person + art, the person's reaction, will always be the same if the person is identical. It's objective in that sense, but just as the reaction depends on the species reacting this 'depends on the person in question' so is subjective. The divide between objective and subjective is one of interpritation, not fact.

Final Fantasy VII is definitely art, music, story, beautiful environments........definitely art.

The major issue with trying to deliver a narrative in a video game is that most developers just haven't quite figured out how to present a story in a medium as interactive as this one in a way that the interactivity actually strengthens the narrative, rather than weakening it. Most video game stories consist of either a linear series of objectives connected by cutscenes, a collection of random objectives spread throughout an open landscape, or simply some vague themes and messages.
@Monoochrom12 жыл бұрын
Such as? As a Gamer, I pretty much agree with him, now I am not going to say that this is so and will always be so, but currently I can't really think of any game where I consider the whole "art". I consider parts of it art and I enjoy some of the attempts and see that in some ways they are getting there, but I don't feel that Devs have actually found a way to make the entire thing a cohesive work of art instead of a whole consisting of fragments of artful and less artful things.
@ScottMcTony13 жыл бұрын
RE: What you said about video games and being art - I'd say it varies by game. Let me ask you this: can video game interactivity be art? As TJ said some videogames' back ground stories and character design can be art (and they are, always,often people say that bad art is not art, but that's not true, bad art is art, it's just bad) but what about the interactive part?
@weumumaway13 жыл бұрын
I think that the purpose of art is definitely for expression. Expression of what is differed from art piece to art piece, but it is expression.
@GanonMasta13 жыл бұрын
@Saturninefilms so if an interactive media artist creates something it is not art? The thing with art is that it will usually invoke some kind of emotional response. If that is enjoyment or disgust is something subjective, but the manner in which this is achieved can vary. Modern movies use visuals and audio to convey an emotion. Videogames also use audio and visuals to achieve this, however both are adjust to the user via the input he provides. Creation=art. Playing=experiencing the art.

The way i see it, we want games to be art because then they will be protected by the same measures that other art is protected and we want these games to enjoy the same sort of reverence as art. We want outsiders to appreciate the game as a work of imagination that is worth existing, rather than as something that doesn't matter or shouldn't exist. With art, people are naturally more accepting of its existence even if it's not something they particularly like.
