It's a true story that's been told many times and one I hate. A person creates a company and runs it based on good principle. The company grows. Then the founder is shit-canned, and that good principle is thrown out the window. Its weird that a lot of people don't see that, like "This company used to provide blah, blah". Yes it did, but that company is dead and gone because the person upholding the standard it once had is gone. It's sad, really.

I watched NC when I was in year 6, I'm in my second year of college now and I feel like I can't let him go because he made me laugh when I was bullied in school and stuff. It's a bit like telling an old friend you don't like them anymore because they've changed and started doing other things..but Doug's not the same as he used to be and I'm kind of only around because of..well, nostalgia.

I often wonder how involved Doug is in this poor treatment of employees in Channel Awesome. He seems like a cool guy but he's also one of the founders too so he must be involved in these decisions

He doesnt look like a stand up guy. I feel like his bro and the other guy (I forget the name of the producer) run the show and Doug just keeps his mouth shut.
@Kaefer19738 жыл бұрын
As far as I know he's barely involved in management (considering that videos on the level of these he does actually do take a lot of time, I doubt he'd be able to get all that involved even if he wanted to). But his brother Rob is another matter, he was directly involved in many of the more controversial decisions of the TGWTG/CA management (Not that I would know if said controversial decisions were wrong or right).
@davidmcginness67188 жыл бұрын
Well according to wiki Doug is a producer with Channel Awesome, he's been involved in decision making and helped coordinate their deal with Blip. Granted though Robb seems to have more authority in how the business operates. But still Doug must still have a say as a key part of the business and as producer. It seems very vague though what his powers are. Too difficult to say

I think TJ explained the situation well in this video. After all, it is easy to gather that Linkara is a touchy, wormy guy who would be difficult to work with just by watching him. Lol. But seriously, I think it's unhealthy to take an us vs. them mentality about this. We should judge each of their content makers based on the quality of each of their videos, not on any kind of drama that surrounds their production. A few of those people are hard to sit through, but people like the Cinema Snob and NC have been able to make good videos for years. I DO agree that NC isn't as good as he used to be, but I would never say his new stuff his bad. I think we're just being nostalgic about the nostalgia critic. Lol.

Sounds like Mike Ellis had good intentions in the beginning, it's just a shame he couldn't stay sober and keep it in his pants. He'd say dirty things to Sean Fauz and try to get Holly Brown, HR for TGWTG/Channel Awesome, to leave her husband for him. Once he got ousted, Mike Michaud must have stepped in and pushed Nostalgia Critic first and foremost. He was always the most popular on the site so there was logic there, but it's just a shame the commradery aspect of TGWTG/Channel Awesome disappeared so early on. TJ also did not get invited to the 1st Anniversary Brawl (which was the short film one year before Kickassia), much to his chagrin in some other video. Mike Ellis probably pushed Distressed Watcher because he was friends with TJ, but once he got fired, the remaining management must not have liked him. I think TJ was doing The Amazing Atheist concurrently and the banana video got leaked around the same time, which would've been bad PR. Honestly, it was probably a blessing in disguise. Though Not Productive later failed, TJ managed to turn The Amazing Atheist into a successful venture for years to come and he evaded all the immense, vacuous drama surrounding the remaining creators years later.

I found that after Kickassia the cameo stuff became woefully over-bloated. Not only this but each time I'd watch Linkara, or Benzie, or Snob, some other twat would come in and just ruin the flow. Then the show had about 40 critics reviewing everything from popular 80s media to cola. Now I just go right to Snob and Spoony's own sites, and ignore everyone else. Used to love Pheleous but I swear Lupa just drags his stuff down. She's certainly killed off Ninja the Mission Force for me.

I like coffee. I like bananas. I don't like drinking my coffee and a random waitress comes past and goes "let me add a banana into that for you" before dunking it in. Somebody who is close to one of the other reviewers once told me in a online conversation that Linkara can be very annoying and is overly protective (aggressive weirdo level protective) and without humor when it comes to his friends or to women in general. The on-site TGWTG fanbase was one of the most toxic clusterfucks of humans I've ever seen. They would obsessively malign producers to the point of near harassment (I noticed a lot of this towards Hope Chapman the most for some reason) and seemed to have the combined intellectual capacity of seven ducks. My favorite producers were TJ, Lindsay, Phelous, Lupa, and Mike J, but after Channel Awesome rolled out they fucking fired Phelous and Lupa for stupid draconian bullshit and now Lindsay seems to be trying to break away, so there's really not much of a draw left for me toward that whole racket. It's pretty emphatically become the Doug Walker show, and I feel the NC reviews have become pretty lacking in recent years with an over-reliance on too-long acting shtick.
@MrKrumpetz8 жыл бұрын
+ElNingyou Not making excuses here, but... The reason why people started going against Hope/Jacob is because she/he was always kind of flaky. Then the whole spoony fiasco happened and people started choosing sides. I think spoony goofed when he made a bad joke, but some of the femis on CA really laid into him on Hopes behalf. Which left a sort of funk in that group that just didn't go away. The facade started cracking and one by one most of the producers that made CA great started leaving. All this aside, because I know the people running CA now are definitely not considered ethical anymore.
@TheSilverPhoenix1008 жыл бұрын
See all those people you mentioned with the exception of TJ are a big reason why i stop caring about that site or its frankly horrible fans, Ive always been indiffrent to Lindsay and Lupa but now that they have broken off they have gone full regressive SJW with Todd not far behind desperately trying to get in Lindsey's pants. Phelous ive never cared about. The Critic is at best a shell of what it once was following the route of Seth MacFarlane's school of how to torpedo a once decent show, Linkara is more focused on his content as is Angry Joe again not that i care really as their content is just frankly whinny fanboy. Spoony lets face doesnt care any more and is just basically stealing his fans money at this point. And the people they have left seem like what happens when you raid a special ed classroom looking for talent. Bottomline Channel Awesome is dragging along now trying to create internet drama to boost views, TJ here has almost double their subscriber count and id give it maybe 2 more years till the internet review bubble bursts and that channel dies a very fast death

Alex Yanakiev Long story short: Original CEO of TGWTG left, TGWTG merged with Channel Awesome, new CEO is terrible because he promotes Nostalgia Critic over everyone else (people accuse him of turning CA into the "Doug Walker Show") and is absolutely terrible with communication to the point where questions by other content creators on CA will go unanswered for weeks on end. Long story super-short: The CEO is terrible. As far as I'm aware, the Walker brothers aren't very involved in the scandals. Rob *may* be involved in some sketchy decisions (i.e. firing Lupa for not answering a skype call) but, overall, is still more reasonable than the CEO. The only thing Doug is accused of is (allegedly) feigning excitement about some special effects in one of the yearly specials. Hope that helps. If you want to know more then you can read the farewell posts written by Phelous and Lupa. They aren't completely trustworthy (considering how angry they are) but may give you some insight into the whole affair: phelous.tumblr.com/post/108013883721/goodbye-farewell-and-amen-ca obscuruslupa.tumblr.com/post/108008749157/bye-ca

I've never been to his site, only KZbin, but really.. I've become an ex-NC (Nostalgia Critic) fan. When I first discovered him by accident, I thought that he was the most awesome guy ever, then about.. and only a year and a half later, I began to notice, that he reviewed a lot of movies I liked, that I haven`t seen in a while, and tore them apart, then I'd see the movie later, and thought to myself, "What the fuck is this guy's problem?". The more studying I did about movies, the more stupid he looked, because of his jumbled arguments and countless mistakes and repetitive jokes, and people actually taking him seriously just got me in a rage. He's the opposite of fine wine: not getting better with age (plus he's running out of "bad" movies to review, so now he's reviewing good ones and demolishing them). If you're a fan, I'm sorry if I was offensive. I really am. But he ruined almost everything I loved, with only a quarter of his brain and little to almost no knowledge of cinema whatsoever.

Also, if the main purpose of his show is to ruin what we like... I think he's doing things for all the wrong reasons. They're not just movies that we liked, a lot of them are movies that people, smart people put their life's work into, and he just pisses on them without any remorse what so ever.

Whatever happens, Ill follow your content wherever you put it. You have kicked ass for years and I love a good deal of your material.

I remember this vid back when it first published. I remember watching TJ in his early days making some of the most on edge videos that the atheist community online had seen for awhile or up to that point even. I was sad to see him go from CA, because for a long time when it was TGWTG it was great. Most of the originals where gone or on their way out by the time Spoony was going (over the Hope fiasco - apparently, though other reasons I am sure exist). Then Carmichael/JewWario left then did himself in a year after that, which impacted the ones on the site that actually cared. Then the GamerGate thing happened and more renown reviewers such as AngryJoe seemed real passive when his audience that primarily consisted of gamers expected him to take a stand against the SOCJUS bullies...which drove people apart again. Then Lindsay had enough cause she wasn't making enough monies, then we had the Mike Michaud and Lupa/Phelous crisis over semi-related issues. That community has fallen apart for a variety of reasons. I think TJ benefited in the long-run steering clear of those shallows.

Doug's videos used to be funny to me, but then with the newer ones, he has to throw in five minute derailments mid-review, which are not funny, and are rather annoying. Only three people I liked from that Site would have to be Spoony, Cinema Snob, and I actually learned about T.J through TGWTG, so that would make AA the third. So, yeah. That was my useless little bit of information.

From everything, I've heard and read it sounds like a handful of content creators got control and are just out for themselves. It also kind of sounds like the whole thing just got too big for their ability to maintain it. They just didn't know how to run something that large and complex properly. The original idea of building a stable of creators and promoting everyone based on merit made perfect sense but it seems some people didn't want that.

"I stopped f#%king trying... Didn't give a $#\+" I think that was your only real mistake, if you love what you do and you appreciate the fans (no matter how few or many they may be) you still give it your best effort. Because while it may be about money for some, to some extent it's still about enjoying yourself and providing funny or thought provoking critiques and discussions. I know I could put myself in front of a webcam today and start making my own videos about things I think are awesome while the majority thinks it sucks or vice versa. Would I get a lot of views, earn a spot on channel awesome's roster, or get a cameo or do a crossover with one of my favorite reviewers? Probably not, but I would at least have fun doing it. And if it's an issue with placement, bare in mind that if you have a solid enough fan base, people will scroll down that list to find you because they want to, sometimes I have to go digging through a whole mess of reviewers I've never even heard of to find videos from my favorites like newcomer SFDebris or even known veterans of the site like Linkara and Sage. At the end of the day it's about doing what you love and appreciating the people who love what you do

Ah, thanks for making this. It explains a lot. I'm sorry that things didn't work out for you on that site. I did like most of the Trailer Failure videos you did.
@HelloFade29 жыл бұрын
Well there's also the fact that pretty much everyone at TGWTG/Channel Awesome is a feminist or a feminist supporter and anyone who watches videos by TJ (The Amazing Atheist) would know that he is NOT a fan of feminists,so yeah that might be another reason why things didn't work out between TJ and TGWTG....

My respect for you TJ. I happen to be a huge fan of both: you and Dough and call it predjudice but I swore you were gonna make a huge rant about their site, and it's cool you know you ended up in well terms. You're right and I knew exactly it was gonna happen, since their job is more comedy focused and you're videos content is tottally different. Keep posting your videos, you're one of the few people who actually has something to say.

Giorgi Tsurtsumia Not 100% sure, I think it had to do with copyright, or the partner agreement or something. The individual people that were on it have been uploading to their individual channels (as well as uploading all of the previous stuff slowly).

I dont understand what he is trying to get across. He is complaining that he got less support from the site because he started to put less work into his videos which resulted in worse videos?
@eliblackwood882110 жыл бұрын
he's not complaining at all. He's just telling why he's not on anymore because so many people were asking.
@TheBaioken10 жыл бұрын
MrMeeish But he is saying the reason was, he didnt get much support from the site/main owners because he didnt put in as much work into his video like sbefore, which he admits. So there is no one to blame but himself? He basically could also say, yeah, I just didnt feel like being part of the site and left in agreement. I dont understand why there has to be as slight hint of drama in this story.
@SIngli612 жыл бұрын
Yeah, but any popular site acquires elements of that. It's capitalism, and for better or worse, it gives us talented people like Doug Walker, Brad Jones, and Kyle Kallgren.

Hey. I remember watching your DW stuff when you were on TGWTG. I also remember when your videos started getting bottom billings, and when they started sliding down hill very fast. They were very good videos when you were in your hitting your stride, and you were very good at keeping thows videos separate from your controversial AA videos. This was a very interesting video, and very "fair" if that makes sence.
