“Throw a bunch of stuff on the bed and hope it keeps the bed warm… I know that’s a very ADVANCED gardening technique 😂” - Love it!

Such an advanced technique I should probably patent it 🤣

They’re supposed to be solar powered and they haven’t lit up yet 😩

I'm sure the pigeons will still find something in those raised beds. Either food or something for building a nest.

I really hope they nest here!

I did dahlia lift last year and had 50% success. Any $$$ saved is a bonus. This year I'm just leaving tubers in the pots in the garage. My dahlia expert friends say, the biggest enemy is rotting due to moisture. I wonder if something to exclude extra moisture in the bed might help your experiments success? Food for thought anyway. I love an experiment. I had 100% success with the begonia tuber overwintering, but lost 10 to the wet August we had. My bad I guess, we just never have that much rain in August and everything else was enjoying the H20 here in Chicagoland.

Thats such a good idea! I have an extra tarp I should throw on top of the bed.

The cold has finally arrived!! 🥶Happy Friday Bethany, I am already counting down the days to spring💚💚
@ChicagoGardenerАй бұрын
I am too! Spring can’t get here fast enough.

Bethany are you interested in growing any of the ornamental kales for some color in winter? Do you see any of these walking around in Chicago? Maybe hellebores would be an option too?
@ChicagoGardenerАй бұрын
There are a lot of kales around the city! I should probably pop some in for some color so I’m not just staring at brown all winter 😆

Bethany, you look so cold up there with your ear muffs on. I think your winter interest is going to look beautiful! How about a temporary home for the pigeons to get warmth?
@ChicagoGardenerАй бұрын
I got them a wooden pigeon box but they haven’t use it yet 😆

@ hopefully they will…you are great pigeon mom to them!

I have a question for you. I should probably know this but I don’t, you can put tarps over your bulbs? Don’t they need light? Or is that not until spring? It would save me so much grief to cover my bulbs with tarps. Those little squirrel monsters keep digging at my bulbs. I’ve tried everything. Repelz-all, bird spikes, & cayenne pepper, but they still dig. 🐿️😬
@ChicagoGardenerАй бұрын
Only once the leaves pop through the soil do they need light!

I have a bunch of bulbs (I think mostly alliums) that never made it in the ground, which is frozen. Suggestions on what to do with them? I have some leftover potting soil. The basement gets to about 40F. Would I be able to put them in pots down there at this point?
@ChicagoGardenerАй бұрын
Yes! If the basement is 40 degrees that’s perfect.

What temp is your garage usually??

@@ChicagoGardenermine stays 50 to 55 for some reason and is "unheated" I've got my potted bulbs in it hoping that is cool enough.... you think??
