Do you have an update on this? I grew mine in small 20cm pot and it started to slowly die because of its extensive roots. Had to restart but unsure how big the pot should be.... don't want to plant on the ground cos I'm scared i won't be able to control it

This gave me hope!!! I have 9 large oak trees in my yard and iv never really been able to have a traditional flowering type of garden because the oak trees block out almost the entire yard I have 1 spot that may receive about 4 hrs not nearly enough for a flowering garden or a vegetable garden and every year my neighbors yards look so nice and mine just has the trees with the spotty grass and I just don’t even plant anything because it won’t do well anyway but iv not really thought of trying to do more typical house plant types that like the shade iv never put them outside but my yard would be perfect for the jungle type plants because of the coverage I’m going to try that this year so my yard can at-least stop looking so dull lol

Some moisture is needed for the bulbs, it’s part of what triggers their growth. Naturally bulbs are in the ground and are exposed to rain, as long as the ground drains well the bulbs shouldn’t rot.

Thanks for all the inspirations! I need to try pressing the superbena next year! I saw in some of videos earlier this year they mention that to avoid mold the blotting paper needs to be replaced once after the first 24 hours from adding the flower. In my experience I probably had time or remembered half of the time and forgot the rest. But that definitely helped me avoid the mold appearing.
@ChicagoGardener

That makes so much sense! I’m going to try that next year with the ones that had mold.

This reminds me I need to check my flower press, I know there’s flowers inside. Out of sight, out of mind. I bought the flower press from Gardens Supply, but I feel like I can’t get it bound tight enough with the Velcro. It’s a gorgeous wooden press, but after looking at yours, I don’t think it’s as efficient. I also have a microwave one that I’ve yet to try. I noticed Amazon has an oversize press (15x11.4) with six screws and wingnuts. They also have one that besides the screws you can press it in the center from above. I better be careful. I’ll be collecting garden presses like I collect Garden books.

Curiosity once again. The bottom right of your shelving unit I see a book of your garden? I just received books I had done of mine also. I went with once upon books I liked that you could add title on cover and text inside. I'm curious if you would share your book and company you used.

I love pressing flowers but I’m super cheap and refuse to purchase the fancy presses (although it would be a great gift😂). I’ve had great success making my own from. I made a big one from 2 12x12 particle boards- I think I had them in my art/painting stash. Less than $5 worth of hardware and upcycled paper/cardboard for the layers. It works amazingly well. I’ve also done one with a couple dollar store wood cutting boards (upcycled materials for the layers) and then I clamped it to an overhang on my countertop with some board clamps. Also highly effective! Just tips for those who may not want to use books but can’t afford a fancy presses. 😊

I second the Merlin app suggestion and also offer this for those fast moving birds…record them. I have been trying to tell my blue jays apart and they are way too quick. So I will record them at the pile of peanuts I put out and then even if they flit in and away right away I can watch back and enlarge the image to figure out who is who!

What worked well for me last year was starting garden prep stuff in late February/early March whenever there was an unseasonably warm day (of which there were a lot). Using the spoons while I had them to build beds and haul soil and mulch around because I knew there would be weeks during the regular season where nothing got done (like the last 3 weeks of June 🤷🏻‍♀️) worked out really well. I still have plenty of spaces that need set up, so if Mother Nature continues to act like a hot mess, I should get some opportunities soon. I also wanted to sow some things like snapdragons that require cold stratification in milk jugs and just leave them in one of the empty flower drawers to do their thing. If you happen to find anything in your book that I could bribe robins with so that they would stop treating my yard as a progressive dinner, I'd love to hear it 😅. Maybe keeping morning glories inside is the way to keep them from taking over EVERYTHING. As always, I like seeing your videos.

It's great that you're motivated to learn more about horticulture and the science of gardening. I wish more gardening creators were. Also- are you interested in creating more 'field trip' type content? I'm thinking there was one of yours at a nearby garden that was pretty cool to see. I think a lot of us would like to see more of the Chicago that's right outside your door. Just a thought. Enjoying whatever you do.

All great winter ideas! I love listening to my audiobooks while browsing online for spring seeds and perennials, starting my seeds indoors, and have just ordered all the supplies to start making my own moss poles for my indoor pothos and other vining plants. I’m excited because it’s a lot less expensive than buying premade poles and I can create any variation I want. This should keep me busy over the winter🤓

@@ChicagoGardener I bought a moss pole for $32 on Etsy then found I could order all the supplies I needed for about $100 and make dozens of them! @thelecaqueen has extensive moss pole tutorials and you’ll be blown away how big her pothos leaves get! Poles are amazing for getting plants huge 🤣. I’m talking a 9 ft pothos with leaves a foot wide😮! Also @sydneyplantguy has lots of info.
