This is my favorite cooking setup when it’s just me and the dog out in the wilds.

great setup. i don't know if you've found out that, the new canteen cups w/ the butterfly handles, if you squeeze the bottom corners together they lock.

Nice set-up, John! Canteen kits are great and I really like this set-up of yours. I love mine too.. There are just so many options with them.

You demonstrated one of the great things about the US canteen cup, there's tonnes of options out there to go with it. I have a unit made to US canteen cup size shaped like the British Crusader pot stand, with hexi blocks it cuts down the boil time. I do change the US canteen cup for a French army aluminium one on longer hikes to cut down the weight. Thanks for the video!!!

+jelkel25 Thanks for watching and commenting on another one of my videos. Since this video, I have added quite a bit to my mess kit/canteen collection. One of the things is I have acquired an original US military aluminum canteen cup made in 1944 by E.A. Co. I haven't decided yet if I will use it or keep just as a collector. If I do decide to use it, it will make my setup a little lighter.

John Sherwood Only recently found out there were US army aluminium canteen cups, yes, I'm trying to stop myself collecting East German army kit at present (and failing) so I get the collecting thing!!

jelkel25 At one time I had a list of the years cups were made of aluminum. Guess you could bing it.

Nice kits. I like the german aluminum utensil set.

Thanks. That utensil set is my favorite one. Thanks for watching!

I like the older handle better. You can use knife/bayonet blade to stick in top slot for easy removal from fire.

Good job buddy. You know how I like my canteen cups...
@John-Sherwood-W4JFS6 жыл бұрын
FloridaBoy Survival yes you do! You should being a founding father of Canteen Cup Tuesday. This is one of my older videos. As you know, our kits and mentality change over time so this video is where I was when I first started out. This was even before I became a canteen and mess kit collector. Maybe I should do an update video. Thanks for watching my video!

Thanks! I have changed my setup since this video. The zippers on that bag were starting to give me trouble so I changed to an East German mag pouch for my canteen carrier. Here is the video: Start at 2:35 if you just want to see the bag: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gGSkdWRoqNuLbZo

I really like that second pouch. Looks like it has a lot of room in it for all my accessories. Where can I buy one in the USA? I think you mentioned they were a made in India knockoff? Did you get it on Amazon?

Do what I do with my ww2 canteen. Put some pebbles in it and some water. You can tell where the rocks are and shake until clean . Then take a tooth brush and clean seam and screw top of jug and if necessary replace the cork. Then after the rock are done doing their job boil water in it. The metal tast will go away. It's what my uncle that survived batan did to clean his.

watched it again. you still like the Nalgene plastic canteen after all of time? i might get one if you do? thx john
@John-Sherwood-W4JFS6 жыл бұрын
Martina Dejaquiz I do like it. Out of all my canteen collection it is the one I carry most. I like it because I can see at a glance how much water is left and the water still tastes great from it even when it’s been in there the whole weekend. It’s made really well and also it’s BPA free but that part isn’t super important to me. I think you would like it.
@martinadejaquiz24826 жыл бұрын
that's good john. i think i'll order one. maybe a green one. i like being able to see in it too. i have 2 complete nice WWII sets - SS canteens, SS cups & covers, but those are holy grail to me. i just won't use them. thanks
@John-Sherwood-W4JFS6 жыл бұрын
Nice collection! I have two WWII canteen sets too. I still use them sometimes and they are in some of my cooking videos. I have had the stainless 1944 set since I was a kid so its been used a lot by me. The other WWII cup is aluminum and dated 1945. My primary canteen set is the butterfly handled one painted black from this video with the green Nalgene canteen. When I use these sets I often think of the soldiers that used them before me and wonder if they are still around and what kind of people they are. If the sets could only talk!

What are your thoughts on the BCB British canteen system?
@John-Sherwood-W4JFS7 жыл бұрын
I have never used one. I hope to own one day for my collection. I like the idea of having two cups with the canteen bottle. The ultimate would be two metal cups. But I don't think any other kit will ever bump my US canteen system from my top spot. I have too many memories using my setup.

You didnt post a link for the bag you carry it in and btw the military issue stove is lighter and there are lighter ss and plastic options for a cup cover that are far more reasonably priced compared to the heavy cover stuff
@John-Sherwood-W4JFS6 жыл бұрын
shawn b Sorry about the link. The online store that I got it from no longer exists. This video is one of my first and my current setup has evolved since the time of this video. I thought about taking the video down but I haven’t done it yet. Currently I have lots of different choices for a canteen cup system. When it comes to lids, I prefer the Pathfinder SS lid. I like that it is light and it is dished in so I can put coals on top for baking. That Heavy Cover one rarely gets used and that green pouch never get used anymore. I still care the Canteen Shop stove sometimes. Makes for a good stand to put my cup or other pots and pans over a larger fire. Thanks for watching and for your comment! If you want, check out some of my other videos so you can see how my set up has changed.

the stanley takes too much space for what it is you could get easily a couple of e liquid squeezers in there with various fillings salt pepper tabasco vinegar olive oil etc they are on par when it comes to beeing leak proof i have one on me as edc filled with zippo fluid not a single drop leaked
@John-Sherwood-W4JFS6 жыл бұрын
Zair Malik I’m happy that you have had good luck with squeezer bottles but I haven’t. It really sucks when they leak. Even when you put them in a ziplock bag it makes a mess I will not use them again. The Stanley is heavy and bulky but it hasn’t leaked a drop for the last two years I have used it.
@zairmalik27756 жыл бұрын
John Sherwood hmm sad to hear that i use german made ones from a german e liquid producer right on first glance you see they are heavy duty but here is a tip take a hard case for sunglasses if you ever come across to some quality squeezers i know the cheap ones can be a pain in the.... and you are on the safe side

I agree. Does anyone know the purpose of the unique cap and grey inner funnel on the 1st green Skilcraft canteen???
@samanthajones10306 жыл бұрын
PrivateIslandMaine I did some research and found out that it is for chemical warfare. There's a tube in the gas masks that can allow you to drink from the canteen while preventing contamination.

I put 3 water bottles in my cup in my pouch, I just don't see the need for canteens anymore, we didn't use them in Iraq, but the cup?,,, all day long.
@jsmith62662 жыл бұрын
John, like your video but our military wouldn't have us or it's people care their water, cup and cooking set in a flimsy pouch. Not military issue.
