My Uncle enlisted in the USMC when he was 15 and he landed on Iwo when he was 16. I have one of his 3 canteens with his name on it. It's an alum. canteen. He was a machine gunner & Iwo was his only combat.

Camp Elliot is here in San Diego, CA. It’s three miles from my house. It was a USMC artillery training base 1936 to 1944. In 1944 it was moved to Camp Pendleton, CA.

"V-Mail" stands for "Victory Mail." It was a system the US Armed Forces used during WW2 where messages would be written on small, standard-sized forms. These forms would then be photographed, and the film canisters could then be easily transported either out to the field or back to the States. Once at their destination, they were enlarged--some quality loss, but usually legible if the handwriting was okay--and delivered to the recipient. This saved God-knows-how-much time and effort that would have had to be expended to move vast quantities of traditional mail back and forth between servicemen and their families back home.

This is cool. I just learned that the canteens we used in the Netherlands in 1991 are basicly the WW2 U.S. version, padded with felt and before the snaps.. As the usmc from 1952 but with plastic bottle and stainless cup. Neat. We also wore o.d. green but with a dpm poncho (allready) ;))

Very informative video well done . A little fact my USMC WW2 vet father shared with me was was that they would put a marble in the canteen to keep algae from building up and of course when going into action the marble would be removed.

Jack Trumble was from Elyria, OH and started his Marine Corps service Dec 1, 1942 at Parris Island, then to Quantico before he left for overseas service in September of 1943. On Iwo Jima he was a 20 year old Corporal, serving as a mail clerk with the Third Marine Division's Post Office.

If you want to remove it from the inside you could get some metal bb’s and put them inside the canteen with a little bit of water, then shake it for a few minutes until the oxidation layer is removed.

I have what seems to be a vietnam era canteen and cover with cup . The problem I cant find one like mine and wonder if it is to a special unit or if it may had been modified in the field . I fould this in the trash complete . The canteen cup had never been used . Now it is the cover I need to figure out . It has 3 leather straps or loops if you will . One on both the right and left sides. And one on the bottom included intertwined on the bottom strap is an O ring . All the leather loops are riveted on to the canteen cover with Brass rivets . And both the leather and the rivets look old and are still intact . I can squeeze a bic lighter in between the leather loop and the canteen cover with canteen inside . If anyone has and info on this item or anything to add . Please feel free to contact me . I could e mail pictures if need be . I spent hours looking and looking to find a picture of one like it and no dice as so far . God Bless

i dont think thats an ultra rare first 500 canteens made that he shows in the video. what he has is what some call a second pattern 1st pattern has a first and second variation agm canteen look at the chain link attaching it to the neck ring. also the neck ring holding chain is ROUND the originals first pattern were FLAT i think the canteen he has is 1913 to 1915 canteen. not early 1910/1911 canteen. also the improved round hump above the neck ring is a dead give away its a later canteen. what i he has a 3rd variation the first would have threading inside the neck the second a sleeve going down 3/4 of the way down inside hiding the threads then this third smooth inside neck no sleeve which he is showing then their is a fourth with a clamp like collar for the chain like the 1918 canteens. this is my opinion because their is so much misinformation on these early canteens as evident in this video.
