A lot of people prefer it over kennels because the pets stay where they’re comfortable and familiar, especially the elderly pets who need medications. I’m 25 and I’ve been doing it since I was 18.

@@zenmilk it definitely can be, especially at different houses. This one family I still housesit for used to live 30 min away from my home, out on a rural road in a mansion. Their backyard sloped down to a river, the house was surrounded by crops, and the driveway was about half a mile long. And I would have to kennel one of the dogs outside at night, across part of the driveway. The closest neighbor was also about half a mile away. And this house was _big_ with 4 bedrooms and a sort of attic bonus room. They also didn’t have any locks on the bedroom doors so I couldn’t lock myself in to feel safer. Thankfully they did have a security system, but they never taught me how to arm it when I was inside; only how to do it for when I was leaving. They also had these massive sliding doors and tall windows in the living room that led to their back patio and giant backyard, with no shades or curtains, so unless I had the patio lights on at night, it was just a pitch black void outside. The big dogs also weren’t allowed in the house so I didn’t have them to protect me. I frequently left a lot of the lights on just to feel safer. They’ve since moved only 5 minutes from me into a suburban neighborhood lol

@@thylionheart Oh my gosh that’s terrifying. Housesitting seems like such an easy job on paper but I never found the appeal because it’s hard to know if you’re safe where you go or you can trust the people you come across. In my opinion good thing they moved!! I’d never want to live in such a secluded house.

@@zenmilk Housesitting can definitely be a challenge at times! I have another family I’ve housesat for twice and the first time I was told I could sleep in the daughter’s room while she was away at uni. While I was there, I realized that their college-aged son had passed away: there was an urn with photos on a table in the living room and a birth-death date, the wifi password was his name & birthday, there were photos of him everywhere, and his room-the door of which was open when I arrived-was completely intact and pristine. I double checked & found an article about it so I knew for sure he had passed. The second time I housesat for them, the daughter was home from uni and had moved back into her room, and even though she was joining her family on their trip, the mom (who was the one who hired me) told me that her daughter’s room was too much of a mess for me to use, so I could use her son’s room. Her dead son’s room. Who, by the way, she _never outright told me_ was dead. I grabbed an air mattress from my home, set it up in the home office, and slept in there instead.
