For those at Dartmouth...happy 21W bid day! If rush worked out for you, congratulations! I sincerely hope you've found a community that will make you happy and encourages you to be your best self. If rush didn't work out for you, you're not alone.
When I rushed my sophomore year, I had no idea what I was doing or what I was looking for. It felt like everyone around me was thriving while I was just trying to keep up, because I felt like that's what I was supposed to do. As an introverted over-thinker, recruitment was an incredibly emotional and stressful experience for me.
I know there are infinitely many more things important than sorority rush, but when you're going through recruitment, it can feel overwhelming. I hear so many offensive discussions of house rankings and know there are so many girls who have their confidence destroyed by recruitment; yet, all we see are those who were successful. We don't talk enough about those who don't have a positive experience.
At my school, only about two-thirds to three-quarters of girls who start the recruitment process get a bid. To the many girls who didn't get a bid, never felt like they cliqued with a house, or felt less-than at any point in the rush process: Rush is not a reflection of the person you are. Like I saw someone else say that other day, a bad bitch is a bad bitch, no matter what house she's in. Rush is a highly imperfect process, and whether you decide to try again at another point or decide to be an unaffiliated queen, you belong to our (or your respective) community.
P.S. Feel free to attack me for being an idiot during this process lol but don't come @ me for the weird animation brooo I actually just started a real Animation course (after this video was filmed) so it'll only get better (hopefully).

I'm only 2/3 through the video so far, but your part about talking to the same people at the sororities you liked was exactly what happened to me (ASU in 2005) and what led me to drop out of rush the final night. I was so overwhelmed by how fast everything happened and I couldn't tell if I actually liked the sororities (which happened to be the ones I knew the least about or were maybe talked about the least compared to others) or if I really just vibed with those specific girls (one girl each) at the two sororities and just wanted to be their friends. ASU was so big that at the time (freshman year), I kinda regretted not finding out by going through with it, but now, as an adult, I've come to terms with surviving college without waving a white rose by candlelight singing that some say love is river that drowns the tender reed.

The sorority system feels like a cult to me. No judgement to rushers but this seems like a nightmare. 10/10 not my scene. I'm really happy that my college does not have Greek life at all. My anxiety disorder would have a field day.

I ALSO got a cold during recruitment from the stress and it screwed me up so much! ugh the experience was....not fun even though I'm a bubbly, outgoing person and make friends easily, I found the whole process awkward and odd overall. I remember at one house, I accidentally spilled water in my heel, and the sister looked at me deadpan and said: "Just dump it on the floor." I was like, are you sure? That seems....I can go outside? And she was like no, just dump it. I did not get an invite back. as someone with social anxiety, I too relate to so much of this girl haha. for the record, you're hilarious and dope and I'd love to have you as my sorority sister.

There were 5 sororities at the small private college I attended. We went to all 5, I got invited back to 3. During second round, at a house that had seemed friendly, three girls surrounded me and started asking me about how much I liked the boys on campus. I had a boyfriend (we're married now) and didn't realize that was a sorority deal-breaker. I panicked and said I didn't want to get drunk and end up making out or something with a boy I didn't really know. I did not get a Pref night invite from them. When I realized how much control my "sisters" would have over my time and schedule, I decided not to rush PanHel and instead to rush Sigma Alpha Iota, a professional organization for women in Music. Pledging and initiation was wonderful, and it fulfilled the expectation I had to be in a college sorority.

That lowkey sounds homophobic and heteronormative how sororities expect girls to like boys and if you aren’t you get made fun of or chastised for it (I know that isn’t what you were saying , but still)
