Hope this helps. It's 14 quick points. Sorry about the length. Lol Fair warning. 1. Fraternities (guys) and sororities (girls) are essentially giant clubs for students to join. There are some that are co-ed. They provide students with a chance to get more involved on campus and in their community and meet new people. 2. You have to be accepted and pay dues to join. Dues can be expensive but the dues cover parties, help to finance events that your greek org puts together, events with other greek orgs like mixers and intramural sports, insurance in case anyone ever gets hurt, your meal plan if your greek house has a chef, shirts for events, and some service/philanthropy events. I've seen some pay $100 per semester and I've seen some pay $2,500 a semester. All depends on what is being offered to you as a member. But if the fraternity/sorority has an official house like the one in this video you can expect the dues to be a bit more. 3. You do have to meet certain GPA requirements and generally they are moderately high to get in. You also have to maintain a certain GPA or else you can be placed on academic probation which usually involves losing your social privileges until you pull your grades up. So in most cases the kids in these orgs do care about grades. Most, not all, but I would say most care. You will have some slip through the cracks but most try to avoid that. 4. A lot of them also require that you do a certain amount of volunteer/community service hours per semester to stay active as a member. So it's not just non-stop partying. 5. Not every fraternity and sorority has a massive house like this. At my school there are strict zoning rules for all students who wish to live off campus so the fraternities and sororities usually rent out larger houses around campus and make them unofficial greek houses. And there are around 8 to 16 people living in each greek house at my school. At some schools where Greek life is a super huge part of the campus culture you may see these giant mansions built by alumni donations or apartments designed by the school specifically to house a small percentage of Greek students. Some of these mansions might have 60 people living in them. But it is possible to see a house like you do in the movies. You also aren't required to live in the houses. But you do get a discount in your dues for doing so. 6. The size of the greek org also varies by school. A chapter of Chi Omega at one school could have 60 members but a different chapter of Chi Omega at a different school could have 350 girls. 7. There are some fraternities and sororities that are made for certain minorities ( black, latino, asian, LGBT, muslim, and religious students.) These minority Greeks tend to have more of a historical aspect with them and concern themselves with topics that impact them directly. Like a Jewish fraternity/sorority celebrating Rosh Hashanah or a black fraternity/sorority doing volunteer work to help impoverished black youth and doing things on campus to help with the black students. You can still join even if you are not that specific minority. Plenty of white people join black and latino fraternities/sororities. I know a guy who was black and Christian, yet joined a historically Jewish fraternity. 8. There have been problems in the past with traditionally white greek orgs not accepting minorities but within the past 20 years many have become very diverse. There are still small issues but it is better overall. 9. Some greek orgs are designed to focus on community service or are designed to help students of a specific college major and these place less emphasis on partying and more on networking, your grades, improving interview techniques, having you meet service organizations and potential employers, and helping to boost your resume and land jobs. There are even some service fraternities designed for kids who are music majors or are musically inclined as a whole. 10. This specific sorority in the video would be classified as a "social greek organization" meaning that they do party and have social mixers with other fraternities and sororities in addition to doing community service work. 11. Some fraternities and sororities are like what you see in the movies where they party a lot, are very prestigious, filled with the popular kids, and have a social hierarchy, but I'd say the majority are very down to Earth and aren't as crazy as what the media makes them out to be. 12. A lot say that you are "buying your friends" by joining greek life. But the same could be said for any other club you join at college cause a lot have dues and the sole purpose of you joining a club was to get involved and meet new people. So... 🤷🏽‍♂️ 13. Sororities and fraternities are very diverse. Not all are full of rich kids. Not all of the sororities are full of drop dead gorgeous skinny models. Not all of the guys in fratenrities are extremely athletic with a 6pack. Find what works for you. 14. Some of the fraternities and sororities have chapters in the Caribbean countries, in Canada, and some have chapters in Europe and Africa at certain schools.

I wake up every morning to some seriously inconsiderate comments and as much as I have tried to answer your questions and clarify things, I will not waste my time replying to rude statements. For those of you who have said supportive things, thank you. Remember that a 13 minute video can't fully explain everything, so be careful when assuming things. I have made plenty of videos showing other aspects of sorority life and there are other videos on YT answering your questions too :) xoxo, Kiara

imagine a club, but bigger i guess? u could really just go anywhere, be like "hi im in this sorority!" and then that's immediate common ground u can have with other people. u would go through recruitment where a bunch of girls sign up to attend events to learn about each different sorority and then by the end of it, you can receive a bid if they liked u and u liked them. there are a few types of sororities, the more mainstream ones are the ones u see here. i think the bigger greek life is at the school, the more strict/discriminatory they may be. they have other sororities that aren't as well known, but usually have a focus on something like volunteering, religion, ethnic groups, or lgbtqia+.

We did a lot of volunteering. Almost all of us worked as well. I'm very introverted, but, it was a great way to make friends with a group of girls with similar ideals. Living is a sorority house was actually cheaper than living in the dorms. I don't know if every school is like that. I went to a smaller university.

At my sorority we have a cook and a handyman/cleaner. It is expected that girls keep their rooms tidy and vacuum them themselves. The ones without a cook did catering instead.

I used to check your doors three times a night to make sure you were safe. On occasion, some young lady would hear me and pop her head out the door and we would both have a good startle and a laugh! I think it would be wonderful if the various houses would give tours in the summer, or something, you know, for all us old house lovers.

I lived in that house from 1986 to 1989. I loved every minute of it. At the time everything was pink with teal accents and the woodwork was painted white. The dining room had purple-flowered wallpaper. The other girls in the house were achievement minded so it really helped me keep my grades up and do well in college. I wasn't cute or popular in high school so I enjoyed being part of a group with such great women.

@KiaraMadisen

It's kinda complicated and different between every single house across America ...but basically you get points from your GPA, attending events, involvement in the house, and community service hours and then every girl gets ranked based on the number of points they have and that determines who chooses their rooms first! Hope that makes a bit more sense :)

This is so interesting! I didn't really know the culture behind sorority in American universities and how they work but after looking at several videos and this one included, I think I understand it more a little bit better of how they work and represent. We don't really have sororities in my country but we have student associations and communities that works like sorority; doing fundraisings, charities, community services, etc. Having community/student housing for specific association is very rare but I see the appeal of having your own house and living together. We just have separate male and female dorms in universities but the majority of the students chooses to live outside campus anyways and live with close friends instead.

Kiara Madisen I was serving, about a week ago, a group of ladies from one of the sororities (can’t place which one it was) who were having a chapter meeting and they talked a lot about their house too and how much they love living there. One take away some of the other people in this comment section don’t seem to understand that I find very beneficial about sororities and frats is the comradry. They can call it “buying friends” but do you know how difficult it can be to make friends at a new school with nearly 8,000+ students lol? How intimidating it can be. That’s what’s so great about these houses, making those connections and friendships right out the gate. It makes your overall academic experience more worthwhile and engaging. So again kudos to you joining and giving others an inside look 👍🏻. I can’t recall in the video but did you mention what year you are this year? What’s your major or what majors are you leaning towards if you’re still undecided?
