The Trinity study concluded that a 4% withdrawal rate on 50/50 stock/bond mix was good for a period of 30 years, NOT in perpetuity. For periods over 30 years, the success rate drops quite a bit. In addition, your specific retirement date will dictate your SORR and hence the likelihood of success. You're better off shooting for a lower withdrawal rate (3-3.5%) if you intend for this money to last forever.

So, when you finally accumlate the 1M, how would you withdraw/distribute/liquidate your assets? I'm assuming the 401k wouldn't be touched until its penalty free. There is also the captial gains taxes on your brokerage investments. Does the 1M goal already account for this?
