Never wait for money in restorations. In any restoration shop I ever worked at or now the shop I own, ALWAYS GET MONEY FIRST, then figure out the way to make that money get you to a point where if the customer doesn’t pay, YOU CAN ROLL IT RIGHT OUTSIDE! The best thing is to make customers aware of what the restoration could cost based on other restorations you’ve done. Asking for money will show a customers reaction and body language, right then and there you will know what you have. I personally mainly deal with repeat customers and word of mouth customers. This way you have an idea of who you have coming in the door.

I have been self employ for over 35 Years, in this time I have learned how to deal with clients like that.First of all I would have mention that the car is not worth to restore , but if the owner was to insist I would have suggested to buy another car the same model in better conditions to start with, If the owner still insist to restore that car ,then I would have said [Quote] .... OK my charges are $100 AU per hour ,do not ask me how many hours are required to do the job right , the only thing I can tell you is that ''....going by past experience and jobs like it '' I could estimate (NOT A QUOTE ! ) you are possibly looking between $50 ,000 and 70,000 AU to dismantle and assembly , repairs, rust work, parts and paint (NO mechanical work !) . also I would have add.... I work to a standard ...NOT TO A PRICE ! + if you are to go ahead with the job I would need 25% of the estimate up front + a payment would be required every 100 hours of work that has been done on the car from a commencing date . If this is not followed, I will send the body in which ever conditions it is at the time back to you sir. I also will pay for the transport back to you and keep 15% of your deposit. I will guarantee my work and it will be done in a proper and skilled matter . this is what I am prepared to do . if you do not agree ..WELL that is called a door ( by pointing to the exit door).... please use it and get out of here thank you.

I give an estimate with a a contract. I make it very clear that it is an estimate and that the price may very well change, but based on the estimated cost, I will divide the cost of the restoration or paint job into 3 installments. 1/3 up front, 1/3 when ready to be painted, 1/3 upon competition. If the price goes up, the last third has a supplemental cost that must be paid to get the keys.

I feel for ya.. Been self employed since 1986.. Lots of ups and downs.. Did a half dozen different things but started out working on cars.. Then scrap dealer.. Last 12 years lawncare.. I get people wanting me to work for close to nothing.. I just turn and walk away.. 50 years of being self employed has been nice.. My wife laughs when someone rips me off or at least tries.. I scream at the top of my lungs "NEXT".. In the early 80's I redid a Blazer top to bottom.. Owner gave me a nice down payment.. Got it done in 6 weeks or so.. For 5 years I tracked him down at the bar , work and a ton of certified letters.. One day I just tore it apart sold parts and scraped the rest.. 3 years later he sobered up and came around.. I was billing him $25 a day storage.. I told him I didn't know what happened to it.. He tried to sue me but it was way past the statue of limitations.. People are trip.. Just sayin

As a small business owner I understand your point of view. People/customers have big dreams and small budgets 😉. I do "speculation" restorations now - I own the car and when it's done I sell when I want to. This isn't my primary business, but it adds up nicely in the end. There is another business locally who specializes in muscle car "clones" and Chevy C10 pickups. He sells through the big auctions and does really well! Maybe an opportunity for you and your business? Best Wishes and thank you for the video!

Hey pal,you go thru this money crap a little too often! I'm not telling you what to do,but what is your policy for doing this kind of work? You need money up front every week or every 2 weeks, right? No money,no work! Strike 3,you're out, come get your car! The customer needs to know your policies concerning payment or payments. Some where along the line, some of your customers haven't got the message from the very beginning! All of us see the high quality work coming out of your shop, getting paid should not be a problem! Again,I'm not telling you what to do,or how to run your business, but up and coming craftsmen need to learn how to deal with slow paying customers. Man,I hope I'm not over-stepping here. Hate seeing you and Minnie go thru this stuff! Thanks for all you do!

Of course Pete will save you thousands by his great tech tips which saves alot of re work... If you pay attention to Petes videos you can learn many things you can't find anywhere else... As today's restoration shops you will need $$$$ lots if money and you may just purchase a completed car for the cash... And local body shops would even paint a full vehicle they just paint panels... so listen to Pete and he will save you thousands...guaranteed... Thanks pete....!!!

I did a frame off resto-mod on my 1978 f150 4x4 that took me 7 years. i only had weekends to work on it and had to buy new equipment and tools because I lost it all to hurricane katrina. that was rough and i don't ever want to go through "starting over" again. I swore after that truck was done i would never do it again like you said Pete. But, here I go again, I got a 1957 plymouth belvedere. yay!!! getting the rotisserie out.

Pete, I believe you need to bail out of this job. Your mental health and well being are worth far more than the aggravation. I had an independent MB shop for over 20 years and I know that you will never get rid of all the problems in this vehicle. And then you will have to look at this customer every week for some recheck or good will repair. We used to call these jobs "rustorations". You cannot fix everything wrong with them, and have to decide what to fix and what to let go. The parts are very expensive- this is not a 55 Chevy. I had plenty of days like this, and most people do not understand how much time and effort go into a job like this. It would be a hard job even if was a well taken care of car, and sometimes the littlest thing can give the most grief. Do what you have to- come to some agreement with this guy, and send the car down the road.

If this car was an 300 SL Gullwing Mercedes from the 1950's, I would restore the car no question. You have to ask yourself if this car is worth restoring, being a shopping jeep. Money up front for work to be done is the way to go. If the customer cannot pay, storage fees apply on a weekly basis. I find it strange that a customer wants the restoration done without having a budget allocation beforehand to keep the project going to completion or a deal in place with you so you can fit other projects in to make a living. I believe the Salvation Army is into charity. Maybe the owner should approach them to restore his car.

It'll cost more to restore all that rust ( and your'e right the car is a plie of shit at its foundation ) than to buy another car . Honestly you could have told the owner just to walk away from it- OR you could have said "I wont touch that car " (because you learned your lesson with the yellow 55 Buick).

Well Pete apparently forgot about that lesson on the buick. It happens because we as humans want to give other humans the benefit of the doubt, even if it might bite us on the tailpipe again.

Shouldn’t have been restored? That’s a good car in the frozen North. Quarter panels look pretty decent.

Sucks that you let it come to that. I'd say your idea of essentially him buying chunks of your time ahead of time is the way to go. Sounds like you're not exactly in a position to enforce that, or you would have from the start.
