I went with Jackie Chan for my dad's first martial arts movie. Bruce Lee is perhaps more important in the history of martial arts films in North America, but Chan's movies are more likely to hit for him. At least, that's what I figured.

Jackie Chan is my favorite martial arts superstar too. The way he combines action with physical comedy is unmatched.

@@wewatchwithchadHe was the GOAT when he was young, but the last 10 years have been almost nothing but cringey and awkward films. It's like he purposely takes roles in terrible films now, like Kung Fu Yoga. Jackie Chan made my childhood and has now also destroyed my childhood. Young Jackie is still the goat though.

One of my childhood HK movies, as a young asian growing up...A classic. Police Story, Wheels on Meals & Armour of God are my 3 all time favourite Jackie movies.

Those are all great choices. I have to put Drunken Master II in as probably my second fave. After that, its harder to pick.

great top 3, I think Wheels On Meals is a Blu Ray now, will have to check that out, the final fighting at the castle was so epic (along with the double boob-punch in Armour of God lol)

I'm delighted to say that I also got to watch this with my father, back in the early 2000s, and around a decade later when I was a home carer, we had movie nights of then modern and re-watched early stuff from MacGuyver to Magnum PI, watching you two react to this was so much like my memories of watching stuff with my dad, the chuckles, the questions, me telling him it was JC singing and about the stunts. Magical! I see you've watched (and for you I guess re-watched) some classics here, so I'm excited to delve more into your channel, many thanks again for this one though, brought back some memories and you both clearly enjoy movie time! Peace & Health wishes etc!

It's funny that you both mentioned playing hookie from school and work to watch Kung Fu, because that's exactly what happened in "Office Space" lol.

I didn't remember that from the movie, but it makes sense. Its a real thing. The show only had a few seasons, so its reruns (in my area) were always during the day. Hulk, Wonder Woman and Six Million Dollar Man were about the same. Probably part of the same block, to be honest.

Whilst I personally wouldn't call _Police Story_ a martial arts movie (in fact, the first fight is not until a good half-hour into the film), this is a great introduction to classic Hong Kong action cinema in general, including the insane stunts. The men who got ejected from the bus were supposed to land on the car (which was specially spring-loaded to help break their fall) but they did not realise the effect that the kind of air-brakes on buses would have so the bus stopped short and had a momentary shunt forward, which ejected the three stuntmen prematurely, causing them to fall on the (unpadded) road instead. Hollywood movies have paid homage to _Police Story_ on more than a few occasions, such as the shantytown destruction sequence being almost entirely copied in _Bad Boys 2_ (2001), the motorcycle section in _Rapid Fire_ (1992) and the aforementioned bus element in _Tango and Cash_ (1989). I would say to the son that, in some ways, he should be relieved that he picked this particular English dub over the original one in which Chan Ka-Kui [Jackie Chan's character] was instead called Kevin Chan, if only because almost the entirety of the music was completely changed (only Jackie's song _Hero Story_ in the closing credits remained unaltered), and some whole sections were severely truncated or cut completely (a prime example being that, in that earlier dub, the telephone-juggling comedy section was totally removed; only the conversation between Chan and Snake Eyes [Tai Po] remained in). The music in the version that you watched in this reaction with your dad was exactly the same as in the original Cantonese version, with the telephone-juggling scene and those other bits missing from the earlier English dub completely intact.
