Hello 💕 I’m taking a gap year as I’ve just graduated from high school. I’m considering spending some time as an au pair somewhere in either Europe or Asia next year if possible. I was just wondering if there was much financial expense on your behalf when applying and becoming an au pair? I’m only out of high school so I’ve no money but I may take a job before going abroad. Hello! I became an Au Pair right after my high school graduation too! I had saved up some money from babysitting. It wasn't very costly for me. (700USD total) The company I worked with didn't cost me money. They also paid for my return ticket home. (They choose the cheapest flight and I didn't really have a say in which airline they choose. But I didn't mind and they did their best to make sure I was most comfortable and were flexible with my travel dates.) I also received monthly "pocket money" which was provided by my host family. It was just enough to be able to go out regularly and do a little bit of shopping. I saved some of mine so that I could go on a trip after my contract finished. Cost wise, it really depends on where you go and how you organize getting there. If an Au Pair company is asking you to pay them, that could be a sign they might be a scam. I never paid one penny to my company. They helped me arrange my arrival ticket but I paid for it directly. When it came time to purchase my return ticket they paid for it directly. I just discovered your channel and I'm catching up with your videos. I'd like to know more about your mandarin learning in China. Your classes were standard mandarin or the local dialect? Did you have many difficulties learning the language? In general terms do you consider safe to go to China as an au pair? Great videos! New subscriber here!

Hey! My classes were directed at teaching standard Mandarin, however, there were some days we talk more about local dialect! It was most difficult for me to learn the tones. I'm still working on perfecting this! Overall I think learning a new language is difficult. Repetition and practicing with native speakers was very helpful for me. Generally, (and based entirely on my own experience) I think in terms of public safety China is a safe place to be an au pair. They have cameras EVERYWHERE which made it feel safer to me. There's also police on almost every street corner and many security guards. In my 6 months stay in Shenzhen, I didn't once witnessed a crime or an arrest, that I was aware of. I felt safer in China then in the US, but I can't speak for everyone. As far as Covid19 is concerned I haven't done enough research to advise if I think it is safe to travel there or not. Hello! Congratulations on matching with your host family! I matched with my host family in November 2017 and joined them in June 2018 so similar time frame as you. I mostly messaged with my host mom and, occasionally the boy I was an au pair for. I would send them pictures of things I thought they might be interested in like my artwork or pictures from my family vacations. I would send them little updates about my visa and plans for arrival. I also asked questions every once in a while, "what kind of clothes should I bring" or "was anything they wanted from my home country". Things like that. I think it's good to contact them regularly so you can start building a relationship with them. It's good to learn about the interests of the children so you can be prepared for when you come. I think for me I would message with them maybe two or three times a month at first and then as it got closer to me coming, about once a week. But honestly, just gauge it on what feels comfortable for you. A tip I have for you is, to find out what kind of books or toys the children are interested in and, bring a small gift based on their interests. Also, it's customary in China to bring gifts for all the family members you will be living with. Doesn't have to be anything too expensive, candies from your home country are always a good choice! How is the situation there with the COVID-19? Would you recommend me to travel in 2021 as an Au Pair?

Hello! I personally haven't spent enough time researching if it will be safe to travel to China in 2021 considering Covid19. Although, I have spoken with my previous host family within the last month and they told me that they felt quite safe. The majority of public facilities were in the process of opening back up a few months ago. Recently schools have also transitioned from online, back to in-person classes. I hope this was helpful! :)

Hi there, what was your agency? Because mine is asking a fee of $100 as a down payment, do you think that is strange?

whatsername 00 The name of the agency I worked with was called Love AuPair China. Personally I did not pay any money to my company directly. I booked my own tickets and they reimbursed me for one of my plane tickets. I would see if you can contact someone outside of the agency who worked with them before and ask what their experience was like. For example, did they have to pay a few, was the agency helpful with arranging visas, did they feel comfortable with their contract agreements. I hope this was helpful!
