Putting on lotions and creams to moisturize is seen as a very female/feminine activity in my whitey family. I was honestly shocked to learn that adult black males regularly use lotion. A fact I didn't learn until college because I grew up mostly in the middle of Kansas, not the most racially diverse area of the country. But all of our guns were registered.

As a Whitey, I never knew about lotion until i stumbled on Bill Burr's comedy, Everything he said is true, I had the same thought about it being the towels or something. Since using it not had a problem. You occasionally gets looks but I aint ashy and some people have warmed up to the Idea. I'm from the North West of England where lotion isn't in anybodys household, only in a purse/handbag.

Have you tried coconut oil? It does pretty much the same thing. I prefer oil over lotion as it's more natural and smells pleasant.

OMG! I learned about ashy when I was in elementary school! Also when I learned about black girls wearing weave! I don't always use lotion, but when I do its gotta have cocoa butter. My friends mom (RIP Miss Laronda) would kill me if I didn't! Now here I am a 30 something drag entertainer still getting guessed in my early 20s. And anyone that wears makeup and has to take it off with any type of remover, don't forget to moisturize! Van and Nia, stay beautiful and keep smiling! Love to your family from Ohio!

I had a friend who was a coworker. She was Black and would call her daughter every afternoon from work. She would give her daughter the list all moms give their kids, what to do, do the homework, etc. Each time she would tell her to make sure she put the lotion on her "ashy skin". I got a kick out of it. It was very sweet actually. She didn't want her daughter to leave the house "ashy".

If you lived in west Texas you would likely have that big bottle of Jergens sitting on your dresser like most of us here have, even us whiteys. When I was a kid I would get very tan in the summer, and I remember being able to scratch my dark arms or legs and make white flakey marks, so I suppose that was "ashy" skin. This was in the 1940-50s & I never even saw a bottle of suntan lotion, much less sunblock, so felt very sorry for my lighter complexioned friends who would blister if they didn't wear more clothes to cover up.

It’s so true! My kids best friends are black and I’m good friends with their mom. We live in a real white area and my friends son’s teacher complained about his “ashy” skin to cps and they came for a visit! Thank God I was there to vouch for this sweet family and case worker left happy and not concerned! But My jaw dropped when I over heard her say that to the mom! I about dragged my sons pasty butt over to the worker and stuck his cracked dragon skin and “so is my sons! It’s winter does the teacher think he needs to be taken away too!”

I live in Maine, we do not have many people of color in Maine, but it would be nice if we did have more diversity. My grandson Henry had a black boy join his school and they became fast friends.
