Cabs are $2.50 a mile. Lyft is 90 cents to $1.25. A Prius costs 07 cents a mile, plus 22 cents depreciation, assuming a rebuild or junk value at 200,000 miles. A van costs 22 cents a mile in gas and another 30 cents a mile in depreciation. Assuming the driver picks you up from 4 miles away (dead miles), and drives you 6 miles, in the Prius it costs him 29 cents × 11 miles = $2.90. He is paid $6 @ $1 per mile. (Plus factor 25% lyft commission and service fee. ) Assuming a guy get 3 trips am hour, he earns $9 after expenses, assuming he drives a Prius. In a van or heavy car, he pays 52 cents a mile. This drivers trip cost him $5.20 for 11 miles. The problem is that the driver can't set a slightly higher price, and must hope for tips to make his day. -edit- the real world numbers differ by location. But the point is, the lyft driver is a poorly paid driver vs a cabbie. Hence, they are lucky to make a few hundred a week profit, after investing $10,000 to $30,000 (often on credit) on a car.

The third was my favorite, a five dollar fare. I gave the cab driver a ten dollar bill and he refused to give me change! @@circusboy90210 Yes Uber is, to drive Uber you must provide your own private vehicle (has to be a new car, within 10 years of current date) that meets all regular road regulations, you must also have insurance, Uber then provides a very small amount of insurance on top of that insurance if you happen to get into a wreck while driving for them. Uber has contractors, not employees, which allows them to not cover insurance. Statistically car driving as a profession puts you in harms way more than most jobs, about 40,000 deaths annually, but the risk of fender benders or worse is on you. Also, the cost of depreciation is not to be taken lightly. That falls all on the driver. I can only speak for Los Angeles, but taxi's are expensive AF. I understand taxi drivers being upset, but in my opinion, they should just jump ship and start driving like this. It's true that driving a taxi is expensive as hell, especially if you don't own the car, which most LA drivers don't. Most of them lease the car from an owner for $500-600/week and literally drive 12 hour days 7 days a week to make their living. But I'm not crying for cab drivers. Somebody came along and broke the system and made it cheaper all around. Uber and Lyft drivers seem to be happier and have more time on their hands than most regular taxi drivers I've known. In the late 90's when both gas and taxis were cheap, I'd take taxi's all over LA, but nowadays, forget it. And last I knew (at least in LA) Uber and Lyft saved a person WAY more than 20% vs taxi's.

This sure hasn't aged well. In a lot of areas, Uber and Lyft have put cab companies out of business and now with no competition, getting reliable transportation is entirely dependent on whether anybody feels like driving at the moment. Furthermore, Uber and Lyft drivers can simply agree to rides on the app and then cancel them when they realize that it isn't a big money ride and they can do all of this with absolutely no repercussions. I've known people to be completely stranded at night with no option but to walk home in the dark on the opposite side of the city. Say what you want about the cab companies, but they at least had dedicated drivers and you could usually count on them to show up when you called them.

@John Newcastle Uber does not what? You trailed off there. Besides it's a pointless argument. Uber drivers can do the same thing and even more on the sly because they're not in a clearly marked car. They can drop any rider for any reason before contact and with absolutely no repercussions. Just because the company is super woke doesn't mean it's drivers are. I mean you can believe that but it won't make it true.

Maybe it just shows too that regular cab driver companies are over regulated? Maybe we're all burdened down with too many laws. Every time legislatures convene, they think they have to make more laws and be generous with other people's resources.

Here in the UK, the guy that worked opposite me wanted to become a taxi driver. Apparently the appropriate insurance was £4000 a year (about $4500). Taxis also cost up to £7 (about $7.90) for a 2-3 mile journey. It's absolutely ridiculous.

I agree that cab prices are out of hand, and competition was bound to spring up. However services like uber and lyft really do rip off their employees. They do not cover gas, nor any expenses related to the vehicle. Often, this causes employees to work for less than minimum wage. I believe that makes these services unsustainable, since their pricing relies on underpaying their employees. It is unfortunate that people are so strapped for cash in this country, that they have to settle for something like this.

Lyft,Uber, Sidecar.. all are free market companies, and you see what happens to them in some states.

I think cabbies are making a comeback in NYC. Passengers don’t have deal with surge pricing and have the option to pay with cash. Their fares are solely based on the miles driven and/or time spent in traffic, and not other factors determined by an algorithm such as demand and the type of car. Uber and Lyft drivers have to go through the same process as cabbies to be able to drive, which does level the playing field. However, the only thing that can be done about asshole cabbies is a report to the Taxi commission. There’s also nothing stopping the passenger from evading the fare by running out of the car.

When I was in New York in 2013, my friend Jabari who was a black guy flagged down a taxi and the taxi didn’t stop but kept going and picked up a white guy instead. I told him don’t trip and I hailed an Uber with my iPhone. Uber picked us up 2 minutes later and we were good to go. 2 years forward taxis would always try to pick him up when the competition against ride share became very fierce. Competition is great because it keeps them on their toes and will try harder to better themselves so they can make an honest living.

I have been a Lyft driver for 4+ years. I have done it part-time and full-time. What can I say? I’m super thankful for entrepreneurs that create companies like these! It saved me from going homeless and it allowed me to: save money, pay off debts, gave me freedom to manage my own time, allowed me to earn more money than a minimum wage job and gave me time to work on my own stuff to find a job in my field. If not for Lyft, I would have been in really deep economic shit. What else can I say? Oh yeah, Government, leave the market the fuck alone!

I like the system of rating your customers to make sure both sides of the transaction behave themselves. It's a free-market solution to the entitled mentality that many retail customers have. It's the employee's job to serve the customer, but if the customer fails to treat employees as human beings, they should take a hike.

If you are taking a commercial/paid trip in a private car, and that driver gets into an accident, get ready to pay for your injuries out of your own pocket, as that driver's PRIVATE insurance policy will not cover you. @MK-ex4pb7 жыл бұрын
Scott Gartner it's not actually doing that. It's Google permissions system that forces it to get a large permission block when it may not have to. The texting calling thing is so you can contact drivers and passengers from the app.

Thank you for not mentioning Uber, they suck the most. Drivers don't make much, it's just extracting value from their vehicle when absolutely broke. The problem is that they don't let drivers charge a fair rate, $3 for a short ride that may take a while to get to. I drove someone 3 hours for $100 (the largest payout ever for me) and then I was 3 hours from home and had to leave. They left me 4 stars and no tip, 360 miles is about $180 in car costs (based on what you're allowed to deduct per mile in some instances); so I technically lost $80 for 6 hours of work. My direct costs of $28 in gas, not factoring in the fact that I have to buy a car and insure it; I made $72 for 6 hours work. Mind you, this was the largest fare. I have had some good experiences and some profitable rides, but it was not profitable long term.
