I think property tax should be abolished. Why does owning something give the government the right to tax you on it for as long as you own it? Property tax really turns ownership into a rental because they will evict you if you fail to pay, and not even have the decency to pay for your equity in the property. This is legalized theft!

@NoEgg4u3 жыл бұрын
If the tax is justified, then there is no reason for politicians to hide the tax. Also, the amount of the tax is not the main issue. The main issue is the existence of frivolous tax. Yes, people will get upset if one huge tax is foisted upon them. So our politicians spread the huge tax out into countless small, hidden, taxes, which is the same thing -- except that it is deceptive. And that 5¢ tax never remains at 5¢, which is why we should protest the new, frivolous tax at its inception -- assuming we have any reputable news outlets that would run stories on such taxes, and show the photos and the names of every elected person that voted for and signed the new tax into law. The photos and names of those officials that voted against it should be newsworthy, too, to give them credit for their selfless public service. @John Stossel, you do a remarkable job in shining a light on these substantive topics. You do far more than so-called news outlets. What I would like to see is your report include the names and photos and party affiliation for every official that had anything to do (pro or con) with every frivolous tax. That is a mountain of work. But it would tie everything together, and let the public see the actual villains and the heroes. It would reveal the swamp creatures, and make them think twice about continuing their self-serving, sleazy actions. Cheers!

With most of these taxes, they simply add to the price of consumer goods/services. So, I factor that in by comparative shopping. As an American consumer, I always try to seek the best quality at the lowest prices. Sales and property taxes are factored in when I decide where I want to purchase a home. Here in Texas, I know the state sales tax is 6.25%, plus up to 2% from counties and cities. So, I consider the county I purchase a home in and if it's within city limits. Likewise for the property tax imposed by counties. I have no real control over federal payroll taxes, but at least I don't pay anything extra in Texas. God bless Texas!! I know the Social Security tax is 6.2% and Medicare is 1.45%. Federal income tax depends on what I make. Overall, I think it's a pretty sad reality that I even have to factor these in. Taxation inherently takes from economic output in a nation. There ought to be far more important considerations I must make than what taxes I have to pay. That shouldn't even need to be a consideration. The government should be far smaller and less burdensome. Taxes should be at such low levels as to be virtually irrelevant. If I had my way, government would exist only to protect basic rights of the people though law enforcement, a justice system, and a military. And, this would be funded through a simple import tariff. All other taxes would be abolished and all other functions would be left to the people, or at least states, to decide for themselves as they see fit.

We don't need taxes, because we don't need to involuntarily subsidize a government we don't need. If we do need services they provide, then they should be privatized, so they can be funded voluntarily, and be subject to competition.

There are SOME key functions that a centralize government is required for. Basic infrastructure and certain utilities, like electricity and water. Private military? Private police? Private fire departments? Private roads? Private schools? Private prosecutors? Private judges? Private prisons? Private water? Private parks and lands only? If everything is private, why live in a country at all as the country is not really a shared resource or purpose at all?
@litigioussociety42496 жыл бұрын
TheFooledGhost Please study anarcho-capitalism or voluntarism/voluntaryism. Private courts can resolve disputes over anything from a broken fence to a dead relative, they can be resolved based on the victim's claim for justice, and the court cannot award itself money through the process; in contrast, public courts can award themselves money through a fine that is not paid to the victim. Becoming a public utility is the worst form of corporatism there is. It's literally using the government to remove all competition. That's what Bell did with the phone industry, and ruined innovation for the phone industry for decades. Utilities worked perfectly fine before the government monopolized them. This is why internet being turned into a public utility would be a horrible thing. As for infrastructure, that is all currently maintained by private companies. The difference is the government uses tax money to pay them, rather than private owners paying for it themselves, if roads and other things were private.

In the Netherlands, the tax is always included in the price and viseable on the bill. So you know what rate you were taxed and how much money it was. By example: Coffee: 3 euro Btw laag 9% (tax): 0,27 euro Total: 3 euro
@systematic1016 жыл бұрын
Either we have income tax or tax when we spend the money. To do both is a double tax. You're taxing me to spend the money that has already been taxed. That's ridiculous and wrong. Personally I think it should be a tax when I spend. If I want to save 50% of my income then that part should not be taxed. Instead they take 37% of my paycheck then take another 13% (depending on what I'm buying) when I want to spend any of the remaining 63%. Then they take $3.4K in property taxes. Hell the property tax is being paid with money that was already taxed. So I have to pay taxes on the money that I will then use to pay another tax. I pay $2K in income taxes to get that $3.4K that I'll be paying in property tax. I don't have a problem with property taxes but I have a serious problem with taxing something more than once. Personally I think property taxes should be more of a subscription fee. If I want to have my garbage picked up then I sign up for it etc. That way it's not tied to my house and it becomes a standard bill that if I don't pay then it can go to collections like any other bill removing the ability of the state to foreclose on your house to pay that bill.

You get the rest. So say you owe $15K in taxes and the house sells for $200K. They take $15K and you get $185K. 3) this is true for any debt and not just property taxes. If you owed say $50K in credit card debt and you are delinquent then the CC company can come after your house. The reason the state goes after the house is because if you have a property tax bill then you have a house. In the end the property is yours. If you choose to not pay the taxes then that's on you. Much like you can't get mad if a land lord kicks you out for not paying rent. With property taxes I'd like to also add that you can opt out of a lot of the stuff that the tax pays for which lowers your tax accordingly. Certain things you can't opt out of like snow removal.

Starting in 1696, and progressing gradually through part of the 19th century, Great Britain managed to put a tax on light and air. First they taxed window glass, then (at least in some places), they placed a tax on opening wooden shutters which allowed light and air in. Next they taxed lamp oil and candles. We sort of have the same taxes today, but usually in the form of sales and transportation taxes which apply to everything. But the succesful taxing of light and air was pretty amazing to me.

I figured out one day just in income taxes property taxes and sales tax i pay 70 percent in taxes
@V2RocketScientist3 жыл бұрын
Taxes are too much! However, you're probably adding all of the taxes together while your actual effective tax rate is lower because some taxes, such as sales tax are taxed after you pay your income tax. I'll throw some numbers to show you: Let's say you pay 65% income tax on $100, so you have $35 left, then you pay 5% sales tax which comes to $1.75 in tax on that $35 (not the $100) and so your total tax liability is $65 + $1.75 = $66.75. Divide that by your original $100 of income and you get only a 66.75% tax rate which is not 70%. So when she said that income tax is only half of the taxes you pay, I'll bet she's just adding the taxes up. The truth of the matter is these sales tax liabilities are greatly reduced because the income tax already robbed us! I actually found that straight income tax and insurance for my business comes to about a 70% effective tax on my income. And then I'm paying sales tax and all these other taxes after that. The other taxes are nothing compared to the income tax and insurance costs but I don't even get 50% of what I work for! and I think 10% is too much!

Government Greed at it's worst! What is really bad is that many states and cities charge sales taxes on many of these fees. Imposing sales taxes and the like on fees and other taxes is outright "government greed"! First inflate the price of a product through excise taxes and then re-tax the same product with sales taxes should be banned, one or the other, but not both!

Imu Lippo No it’s not. Okay answer me this: do you believe that a society (let’s say it has a government for example) did not protect civil rights. Say slavery was legal, and discrimination against races or a gender you didn’t like were allowed. Would you call such a government ethical? If no, then explain how an ancap society (where those things and much more are allowed because there is no law prohibiting it) would still be ethical when the exact same conditions are unethical under a state?

Taxes themselves are not a ripoff. The fact that the tax money is used for attacking other countries and not going towards the American people is the real issue.

When you earn your money, who do you think should choose where it is spent? You or a government? I agree that taxes spent attacking other countries is bad, but "towards the American people" is pretty broad and subjective. What if you think that spending MY tax money on "x" is "towards the American people", but I disagree that "x" is "towards the American people"?

I work in CT. I pay income tax, then I take part of that and buy a car on which I pay sales tax and then the town charges me a yearly property tax for owning the car I paid sales tax on which I bought with taxed money. I also bought a house with taxed money and after paying thousands in fees, I get to pay more property tax yearly using my already taxed money. Let's just set a 50% tax rate on income and do away with all the other thievery.

What John doesn't mention is that each of these nickle and dime taxes comes with its own administrative burden. It always costs money to administer and enforce taxes, and this cost must first be deducted from the amount raised to calculate the actual net taxes realized. It's administratively far more efficient to have a few higher taxes than many lower taxes, but politicians have figured out that people resist the lower taxes less. In a perfect world there would only be one type of tax - income tax.
@Chaille766 жыл бұрын
