Over the years I’ve noticed varying fits in cases that can more or less protect or endanger the headstock to neck transition area. Check underbody support, neck support(s), and absolutely the rear of the headstock must clear the bottom of the case without the headstock face bumping into the case lid. Some folks have made and use extra supports to stabilize the stress point.

Were the strings very tightened up on arrival? It would be interesting to find out, maybe investigate to see if there are more breaks with guitars that are using the heavier Grover style tuners. Until you hold them in your hand next to a Kluson style tuner it is difficult to imagine how much heavier they are. @kurosumomo3 жыл бұрын
Lowering string tension makes the guitar more fragile, always keep tension on the strings, when traveling/shipping and when storing. The only time you lower string tension is on multi-string basses (8+), and you lower every second string, not all of them, but that's because they're under massive stress from the get-go, unlike guitars. Guitars especially fragile ones, need the tenson to stiffen the whole deal, and angled head guitar will break 10 times easier without strings as one that is properly tensioned. Best medicine to avoid broken headstocks is to avoid angled headstock guitars in the first place.
@JohnDoe-tx6uy3 жыл бұрын
@@kurosumomo This particular guitar fell on its face by the looks of it, so the string tension could have only been adding to the stress to the backside of the neck, so less string tension could have even saved it. Also I unboxed Bakers, Collings, Goodalls and Froggy Bottoms with tightly padded headstocks and basically no string tension. So this is what I go by, not 20 string basses. @jimmyjames20223 жыл бұрын
My luthier (a top one in my city) said that actually causes more breaks than leaving the tension on, because the break comes when the headstock pressure is down away from the neck and string tension counters that pressure. You can see with these cases the break comes from the case brace as a pivot point for the headstock going down.

Haven't read the 600 comments, so someone else may have mentioned it, but I'd return that guitar to the seller. It's his responsibility to get the guitar to you in the advertised condition - you shouldn't have to deal with insurance, fixes, etc. When I ship any Gibson, I always loosen the strings to take tension off of that weak spot. When I purchase any Gibson, I insist the seller loosen the strings before shipping. With full string tension (150-650 pounds, or so), it doesn't take much of an impact in either direction to snap a Gibson headstock, even if it's well packed, supported, etc. Finally, I think the first thing to do upon discovering a broken headstock is to remove all string tension to avoid a catastrophic break that could cause physical injury, and/or a more complicated repair. Thanks for the great videos! I don't know how you're able to crank out so much content so frequently.

I believe the headstock/neck joint broke because it was in a Gibson Custom Shop Case. Those Gibson Custom cases and the Historic Gibson Custom Shop Cases have only 1 neck cradle and the cradle is between the 10th and 12 fret, which causes a fulcrum and lever effect with some contribution from the tension on the neck. Regular Gibson Les Paul Standard cases (the $200.00 ones) have support cradles on the neck in two places (a) between the 10th and 12th fret, and (b) at the nut cradling the first fret. That is why I bought a second Gibson Les Paul Standard case with the 2 cradles for my Gibson CS R0 Historic VOS to avoid the problem. Note: at first that Gibson was shipping the R0’s in the historic Lifton case with foam blocks above and beneath the headstock and it appears they have now actually made “pink” covered blocks in the historic cases. Unfortunately, Gibson is unwilling to give (heck it was a $6500 guitar) or even sell the pink/color matching covered foam headstock support blocks. I know this because when I called Gibson (multiple times), the Customer Service Rep was a complete dud and no help and said they are not for sale and is not available to be given to existing customers.

I'm curious about the legal liability part of this situation. It looks like the shipping company is responsible for the damage but, how much do they need to pay? Full price of a new guitar? Average price in the used market? Just the cost of the repair? Also, who are they liable to? The seller, or the buyer?
@EarthAltar3 жыл бұрын
They pay the insured value to the seller. The seller then reimburses the buyer.

You know that broke before it was wrapped up. No damage on the box, that's suspicious.

Generally when headstocks break while the guitar is in the case it's because the case has been propped up and then fallen flat on it's face, so there's a whiplash effect that causes the headstock to jerk forward at the nut. Unfortunately, it's very easy to knock over a shipping box in such a manner that the case goes flat on it's face, and it usually doesn't mark the box in any way, so the person just picks it back up and pretends nothing happened.

I have my Les Paul Custom tuned to C# Standard. Freaking Brutal. I have another Custom Shop Gibson tuned to Drop D quarter step down, and a Gibson USA in D Standard. Gibson’s just sound filthy when tuned down. I have my ESP’s in standard tuning. They sound crisper than Les Paul’s in standard. So my Les Paul’s are my sledgehammers and my ESP Eclipses are my scalpels . 🤘🏻

I actually think the tuning sounds really cool. After a second listen, I'm actually going to try to steal the sound. It definitely sounds different, but it sounds pretty cool

Looks like a clean break. Good luthier could fix it. And with as many Les Paul Gibsons and you touch, it had to happen eventually.
@thomaskafafian28713 жыл бұрын
I still wonder if it’s better to ship guitars in tune. I used to hear you should loosen the strings. Lately I’ve heard to ship it in tune. I can help but think the pressure of the string combined with a firm drop snapped that headstock though.

What's the best way to prevent this from happening in shipping? I'm thinking bubble wrap around the headstock, make sure the guitar doesn't move in the case. Anything else? I'm shipping an SG across country on Monday and this has me worried.

I always pad out the area around the headstock when shipping a guitar with an angled headstock so that the whole headstock is fully supported on both the front and back face - that reduces the risk by a huge degree, I think far more so than loosening the strings.

If you can't find the chip in the case. The guy packed it broke. People will do that. And blame shipping.

Yep, if there aren’t wood chips in the case, I’d highly question the seller.

I believe the Seller is a longtime friend, collector and customer of Trogly's, not very likely anything dishonest took place. More than likely the box simply fell over from upright and the headstock just snapped, sadly I've seen it happen before with a well packed Gibson.

Well, for the resell price it sucks, but for the guitar, I guess a good luthier can keep the Gibson silk and repair it without any problem.

Honestly, I wouldn't say it was shipped very well. Sure, there was plenty of protecting/packing around the guitar case, but nothing inside the case to prevent movement of the headstock. Were the strings still under tension as well?
@ingos52333 жыл бұрын
Looking at the binding on the neck, its obviously painted over. I think the only additional step is painting the face of the headstock red and scraping the binding before painting the whole guitar with yellowed clearcoat.

Was that little missing wood/paint chip in the case? Or did the seller packed it already broken and tried to pull "a fast one"?
@michaelhall7363 жыл бұрын
Aw man, I'm sorry that happened. I hope you can get a refund, get another one, or take it to get repaired. Why do people handle these with such little care when shipping? These are delicate instruments.
@michaelhall7363 жыл бұрын
@@leegollin4417 It didn't break all the way off like others I've seen so it probably wouldn't be a very difficult repair if he decides to get it repaired instead of getting another.

Folks, when boxes are moving through the Fed Ex, UPS or USPS sorting facilities, nobody is concerned about how fragile a package or box is. Its all about moving them as fast as possible for delivery. Years ago I had a Christmas job at UPS unloading tractor trailers. I was supposed to move every package by myself from those 40 footers so speed was the key so being gentle was not part of the equation.

It's sad that happened to such a pretty guitar. From the playing samples you were able to make, it is a very nice sounding guitar as well. Hope it gets a good and invisible repair, and as you said, it makes its way into the hands of someone that couldn't have afforded it otherwise.

I would always bubble wrap an angled headstock as much as I could, nothing touching the case, but just something to take any bumps in transit.

I believe that string tension is the real culprit. Maybe de-tuning may help surely? My ES-175 suffered the same fate. It fell over in the case and I heard it snap
