The princess said that as a young girl she often spent time in Joseon so yes I do think the possibility that she spoke Korean is true

Ah yes she did mention that when she was speaking with Jang Hyun! I wonder if there really was an imperial princesses from the Qing dynasty who spoke Korean. I know it would have been common during the Goryeo period

The term Bui-in (sorry about the spelling!) refers to wife? It also has another meaning like madam? Janghyun calls Gil Chae Bui-in openly after they reunited…😂

ah yes so 부인 (bu-in) means wife. I think in Hanja it almost translates to “the husband’s person”. however it was also used as “married woman/lady” too but usually they say their surname as well ie “Lee-ssi bu-in” (이씨 부인)

I know, right? I was thinking what man in real life would go that far for a woman (unless it is his daughter). Ep. 15 was peaceful, but the ML was the bomb. He was not here to play with anyone trying to her his sweetie.

Thank you for the historial context ! It is wonderful because as non Korean speaker, I have been wondering if Jang Hyun had called Gil Chae "wife" or just "Madam" as the english subtiltle on different streaming platforms are translating them differently. The same for GC calling JH "Husband" or "My Dear". I feel that BOTH have wanted each other to be husband and wife from the very beginning.

An amazing series. I hear and believe it was inspired by "Gone With the Wind", but it is much deeper than that show/novel and certainly does NOT follow the plot past the first few episodes. I've read the book and watched the movie, so I think I'm allowed the opinion. I have to say the depth of the show comes from it's length, much longer than the movie, giving it much greater freedom to explore it's subject and background. The culture and politics of the era has many more issues to cover than GWtW, especially the plight of women and the societal problems caused by Confucianism. This is a theme in a very great many kdramas, though not presented as such on the surface.

@@iamkozzie A must watch! Several others, IMHO, are The Nokdu Flower, and Mr. Sunshine. Nokdu covers the Donghak rebellion of '94-'95 and Mr. Sunshine picks up right afterwards, covering the Japanese subjugation of Korea and the Righteous Army's resistance. Just like My Dearest, there are elements that are pure fiction, but on the whole they are pretty factual re the history and culture of the times. I really hope you can review them someday, I'm very interested in what you might have to say.
