Agree 100%. I had a Classic Edge 550 gasification boiler and I can tell you from experience it was a pain in the "A". I just put in a Classic 5036 this past November and man what a game changer. Now I enjoy burning wood again.

Same here started out with a 5036 13 years later started leaking got a 350 gasser 3 years later it started leaking. Then for 3500 upgrade to a 360 gasser had enough after 1 year traded for new 5036 so much easier

Agree 100%. I’m on my 5th year of a classic edge 750 gasser. Heating 5,000 square feet, and I’m burning 10-13 cord per year. We have all the equipment to make it easy (4 way splitter, skid steer, and tractor), but with how picky they are with wood/maintenance I can’t do another year with it. This will be my last year with the 750. We basically have unlimited wood so I’ll choose something less picky with maintenance/wood processing even if more wood is required.

Thats EXACTLY my point! I dont want to have to get a excavator and a commercial splitter to keep up with the wood needed for these machines! Id rather burn more ugly/unsplit wood than less perfect wood! Thanks for sharing!

Excellent video, I have to agree almost %100. I had a forced air wood burner in the basement for 25 yrs and ran across a used CL5036 3yrs ago and I should have done the owb many years ago. Very safe and simple and it uses less wood than the indoor wood furnace did with better heat about the house. Added the fact that it does the domestic hot water also and I burn all year round. The only way I would consider a gasification unit is if I had limited wood access and close neighbors. Thankfully I have neither, but the big brother aspect I'd never considered. Now I see it everywhere! Looking forward to see what you end up with and good hunting!!!

Having owned a eclassic 1400 for 12years, then bought a cl6048 last year. I would never go back to a gasification stove. All the cleaning and maintenance, plus having to split everything. The classic is the way to go. And it's not burning any more wood than the eclassic either. I burn seasoned wood with the classic. 100% agree with you on all the work involved with a gassifier vs a classic.

First off, Merry Christmas, Jay and family. I have an EPA indoor wood furnace. I agree with all your points. The new furnaces are very efficient. But the wood has to be well seasoned and if it's wet you're going to fight it all day. You are 1000% correct in your analogy of time spent and efficiently. It does depend on how you are set up to process the wood. For me I'm very happy with my new furnace. I burned 4 cords last year compared to 10 in my old wood stove in my old house. Good video Jay. Have a great New Year.

Before you buy, take a look at the Portage & Main Ultimizer. I've had three different woodstoves over the years (1st a Hick's Waterstove, 2nd a Heatmaster MF Series, and now a Portage & Main Ultimizer). The ultimizer is a conventional boiler BUT the firebrick lined firebox allows the temp to breach into gasification which is a more efficient burn. It is a really nice boiler.

I dont mind that idea of the ultimizer cause it is a mechanical gassification. I dont like the computer controlled ones like CB does for the new ones. A mechanical gasser is something I wouldnt reject because I dont think they need perfect split wood cause its forcing air into the unit.

I made the same decision this year with my new one except I went with a different brand. I bought my stove in our business name (although it’s heating my home, don’t tell Uncle Sam) because for some reason non-gasification is ok for commercial use. Our local Central Boiler dealer stocks stoves just like yours for this reason. So that could be an option for you as a tree service owner.

I replaced some water supply lines to my faucets and now my water runs so damn slow because all they have available now are them reduced size water supply lines and I live out in the country with having my own well. I've run a conventional owb since 2000, when the time comes, I'll definitely buy another conventional non complicated several 1000 dollars less expensive owb. Great video!

I put up a metal shed with roll up and walk in door, stuffed it in there after one ohio winter fighting snow and ice with a tarp blowing all over heck. When I go out and the damper is closed I prop it open, write my name in the snow, then use a pallet jack to bring over my IBC tote full of nice dry wood and start chucking. I’ve burned firewood my whole life. We built a new home and went from a Clayton add on furnace to a wood boiler. I was not sure about even going to the boiler all together but you can never beat the heat from firewood. Anyway I was doing research just like you trying to figure out what in my opinion was the best boiler on the market. I was really considering a portage and main but came across crown royal stoves. I have a 7400MP that I’m currently just heating around 5000 square feet and hot water for bathing and such. I want to build a barn and do radiant heat eventually. The MP boilers from crown royal are supposedly epa compliant but are still somewhat old school. Just like you I burn anything that I can pick up and throw in the front door without breaking my back. Only cleaning I have to do is the top part with a hoe to just scrap out the multi pass part of the boiler. Super easy and only takes about 5 minutes.

Better be careful Big Brother might be watching your channel! Let's see i had one neighbor tell me he was out working with his sawmill one day and two ladies from the EPA walked up his driveway just to make sure he wasn't burning garbage in his outdoor wood boiler. Another neighbor told me the local government was going to mandate that all wood boiler owners ( even phase I ) had to burn split seasoned hard wood. Like, what are the police going to come in and inspect your wood pile every week? That proposal fell thru.

We had to buy a gasification unit because NY had forbidden all others. The EPA and NY conveniently forgets that the prep for the wood takes a toll on emissions as I run the splitter. Apples to apples, the gasification boiler burns less wood but I wonder if the total emissions are even less, overall! It's like the new paints-they are better for the environment but aren't as good, so you have to re-paint more often. Makes sense to some but not to me.

Im convinced at a 40% wood savings (running a gasser) you will use more Time/fuel to make cleaner dryer wood! I barely run my splitter for classic wood. I couldnt imagine splitting 8 cords for a gasser...

I have a smaller classic on nicer weather you can load it and it will last 24hrs. People say with the gasification boilers they run best if you only put enough in to last 12 hrs any more and it doesnt run properly.

Im just not sold. I burn so much ugly seasoned wood it would be counter productive for me to pass up that wood and also split EVERY piece. I dont split anything under 6 inches and anthing larger than 6 inches I split to handle and not bust a nut moving it or feeding into boiler. The thought of having perfect wood even 40% less is to me the same amount of work in the long run. I burn a lot of wood that would other wise go to a land fill... I dont know about you but burning it seems better then letting it sit and rot...

Coal boilers might be what you're looking for. I mean if you can't "afford coal or can't get it" (lol) then you need to do what you need to. They are still allowed by the EPA oddly enough. Also, you could connect a system (doesn't matter what it is) to the network at home and not put a gateway in. That system will never get on the internet because it doesn't know how to get to it.

I don't disagree with yuour thinking on the gassification units and the old non-EPA units, having operated both. That being said we have a neighbor who still has an old unit, we are subjected to an incredible amount of smoke due to prevailing winds. As long as the smoke from the old unit does not affect the quality of life for those nearby, have at it. Convenience for some should not make life miserable for others.

I do not always burn seasoned small split wood… most of the time I burn 20-25 percent moisture wood and I also put large 15 inch rounds on the top of the load and they burn just fine. I have even had a 3 day burn last year when I filled it almost full. I really like the fireStar app also so I can see what’s going on at all times. I disagree I had the old one and now have the edge 760 for the 3rd year now. I think the new boiler is better. Because I can see it from my phone. And yes they are a little pickey but you don’t have to split it small as long as it’s dry. Plus the new ones are stainless steel

Just to add to the. As far as some coming out there is absolutely nothing vs the 6048 sometimes would completely smoke everything out

INKBIRD makes a grill temperature probe that connects to the wifi. You can put the probe on the inlet water line and watch the stove burn like the new ones. Shows instant data plus historical data.

Don't let the keyboard warriors dictate your free speech. Just say what you feel and I bet you'll find most people agree. I have an 18 year old classic still going strong and there's zero chance it will be replaced with something connected to the grid.

Gasification is better, less wood and less harmful emissions. At least for absolutely everyone here in Europe 😁

@@HomesteadJay those outdoor gasification boilers are horrible, but the indoor ones from Atmos are super easy to clean you just pull a handle to clean smoke channels and empty ashes thats it

I have nothing against gassification tech. Matter of fact if I did a wood stove inside id get the most advanced gassification/catalytic stove I could cause I know im only burning premium wood inside. The wood boiler can eat the junk haha @@DanishSpeakerChannel

You could have had a 10 second video with just the comment "I want the convenience and NOT the efficiency" This is from a person who just bought a new Classic HDX 560 after running a non gasser for the last 12 years.

2 1/2 months in the jury is still out. Learning curve for sure. Can say that the claims of 50% to 60% less wood hasn't held true. But fairly sure that mine is coming in around 30% to 40% less wood. Check with me in April and I will have a better handle on it.@@HomesteadJay

So why are you getting a new one . Life span is 20 25 years. I got a new 560 edge tier 2 epa approved it heats better but it's more maintence. It's a trade off. I don't care about the epa approved either I just want efficacy

I know the state cant "make me" not use ( since its grandfathered) it but not sure if I can legally buy and replace it with same one idk. Id have to dig into it.

Forget the buzz words, forget the oversight. Companies are being held to a higher standard and the result is a cleaner, more efficient burn. How does that help you? That is the only question you need to answer. For me, that answer is 25-40% more efficient burns. That is 25-40% less wood I need to acquire and process. That is 25-40% less wood I need to throw into the stove. That is what a more efficient stove does for me. The only part of the wood that burns is the evaporated gas. If that fuel gas goes out the chimney, that is effort you wasted and cannot benefit from. If you are old enough to know the crap smog that every car spewed in the 80's and before, you quickly learn to appreciate a few of the EPA oversights. Cars today are cleaner and we are better for it. Same for wood stoves, you can't even see the exhaust from my wood stove and it's great, all that fuel was burned heating my home.

Ive argued this 6 ways to sunday you may burn 40% LESS wood lets say 6 cords versus 10 but the 6 cords of wood you burn you are going to put MORE effort into making perfect wood versus I can get a grapple load of 10 cords and cut them up into 24 inch sections and im done. No splitting no extra work. Im gonna make a video on this so stay tuned. Im not against the gasser stove/boiler. Im against the ones that MAKE you burn clean split stick wood and WONT burn anything thats green. I have seen several of whats called "mechanical gassification" stoves that I would 100% buy because its a mechanical process and NOT a computerized system... My main point was being FORCED to burn clean split wood in a computer controlled machine was not my cup of tea. I want simplicity. Less moving parts the better.
