Roger hope you get to feeling better soon. I wanted to thank you because in this one video I have learned so much about everything I have been doing wrong with the den nobli I have. I pull the kikies off the base too soon. I’m not paying attention to the watering and may be over watering. Now I know about the terminal leaf at the top and what that means. My orchid Produces kikies up the wazoo instead of flowers. I now feel that I will work with this orchid totally different. I’ll hope for the best and remember that a stronger plant in the long run is better than a weak flowering orchid. Thanks you, thank you!

Interesting comment from another viewer, Paul H. I purchased the majority of my Nobiles from the Yamamoto-affiliated nursery in Hawaii. Didn't realize that they were hybrids. But, I must admit that they are the best flowers and the healthiest plants that I have received. Looking forward to their flowering this year. Roger, thanks for an interesting video. (I do have one Spring Dream Apollon, mounted to an areca palm in my side yard. I hope that it might bloom this year.)

Recently purchased a dendrobium on sale. 47% nobile but leaves are really stiff and looks more like a dendrobium Phalenopsis- I think it was mislabeled as Den. Silky White. It has a new growth so whether a winter rest is needed or not the growth says to keep watering and fertilizing

As I mentioned on fb, when I was late with the winter rest last year with one of my Nobiles because it was still growing, it produced keikis instead of flowers. In fact the same plant has recently produced another one so perhaps it's in the genes, although it was in full bloom when I bought it ??
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai5 жыл бұрын
When we buy the mass-produced nobile type hybrids, they are 'forced' into bloom and it can take longer for some to settle down into normal growth.
@barbfroede13435 жыл бұрын
I do hope your illness is short lived. Chicken soup, and lots of it may help. Roger, how do you identify different dendrobium types? Example; a nobile from a dendrobium phal? I’ve only gotten a couple from the big box store and I have 3 with very thick canes and very firm leaves, the other is a skinny flimsy sort and the leaves are very pliable and are now dying off. I assume the skinny one is a nobile, but I don’t know about the others. Thank you for all you do! You always provide excellent tutorials for those of us new to the addiction of orchid growing.
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai5 жыл бұрын
The nobile types have alternate leaves over most of the length of the canes - the canes can vary a lot in thickness. The phal types only have leaves near the tops of the canes and they are thicker more leathery.

Hi Roger ! noticed in your den prima donna that the canes that have bloomed are shriveled up while the newer growths are plump. Is this normal? When the flowers opened on mine, the canes shriveled and no amount of watering has plumped them back up. What should I do? Thanks

The old canes on some nobile type hybrids shrivel and others not so much. As long as the new canes stay plump until after blooming, everything will be fine.

@tracylovisone58745 жыл бұрын
Roger, how can you tell the difference between a nobile and a den. Phal?
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai5 жыл бұрын
The nobile types tend to have leaves over most of the length of the canes whereas the Den. phal types only have a few leaves at the top. Also, spikes can form over most of the canes on nobiles on each node opposite a leaf - the phal types push their spikes from the apex or very close.
@Rockdoc21745 жыл бұрын
A fellow member of the East Midlands OS, who is known for his Dendrobiums, suggested that after a cane terminates and begins to swell I should switch to a low-nitrate (bloom) fertiliser to encourage blooming. My nobile hybrids are producing nubbins now but my species hasn't started yet. It is a young plant, though, so I'm not stressing about it.
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai5 жыл бұрын
Many people have reported nobile hybrids coming into full bloom early this year - no-one seems to know why? Dropping the Nitrogen may help but if it's finished growing, it won't really need much food of any kind.
@Rockdoc21745 жыл бұрын
@@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai he meant while the cane was swelling but to reduce/stop after that as you've advised.
@michaelmccarthy40775 жыл бұрын
What is most strange about the nobile hybrids is that the species plant looks nothing like the hybrids. The canes are much longer, totally round and not much thicker than a pencil and the leaves are smaller.
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai5 жыл бұрын
The 'look' probably depends on what's mixed in with the species.
@olindasilva3155 жыл бұрын

The nobile species is quite variable with some noted named clones with better colours/size - these are often included.

I think this year my Dendrobiums have anormal growth patterns: most have not stopped growing yet; some are now starting new pseudobulbs; and there are 3 with flower stems, very out of season (for example, my Dendrobium Delicatum)! I only have one Dendrobium nobile species (Dendrobium nobile cooksonianum), purchased just this year. Is it harder to make it bloom?

I don't know much about Cymbidiums but if it has no room to grow, it may be best to repot it. A 'day light' probably hasn't got the full light spectrum - but some light is better than no light.

Hello! I have to admit I’ve not had much luck with dendrobium nobile but yes have recently been into some better two attempts - one is more or less ok, the second has shortish canes and is very busy with a ground floor of tiny little growths all leaves, baby stems and tiny keikis.. so I don’t really know what it’s up to nor what I should do to get it growing properly. Flowers all gone. I’ve moved them to my office which has sunlight from sunrise to sunset, a bit doubtful about watering them or not, but prefer to withhold water since they seem happy but look like some other plant. So what should I do? Canes moderately greenish with a few leaves but not getting any taller (no end leaves), can you help please? Thanks Roger
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai4 жыл бұрын
It's difficult to help without seeing the plants. If a nobile type is growing, it will need watering/feeding no matter what time of year. Recently purchased hybrids often take several years before they settle down into an annual growing cycle.

@@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai Thanks Roger for the quick reply. The main problem is with the den with its carpet of tiny little new growths (canes above are just coping): it gets enough sunlight and water, not exactly new because it arrived two months ago. When the boardroom starts growing for profit only then Hobbyists receive third class plants. I say do not buy anything from these Corporate growers. Big companies such as Andy's Orchids in California do not use this money hungry process and produce top notch plants. Companies like that deserve my business as they grow for me not for a profit margin that must be increased at any cost. it cost them my business due to the fact that they serve themselves not customers.
