I have spent almost 20k on my teeth so far due to a lot of root canals and crowns and 8 tooth extractions that I’ve been paying for out of pocket. Dental trauma is such a real thing and I admire you so much for speaking up about it. I was always good at brushing my teeth but flossing would hurt and make my gums bleed so I didn’t want to do it. After a very bad dental experience I didn’t go back until 4 years later at which point the damage was done and I’m still paying for it. Take care of your teeth people! It’s so so so important! 🦷

As a dentist I would like to clarify that the gums don't die. What Adrienne is referring to is most likely the colour of the root of the tooth being visible through the gums. The tooth gets darker when it's dead or had a root canal.

I, literally, had to stop this video 4x to cry because it resonated with me so much. Thank you so much for making this video, Adrienne. I am 63 yo and it's so crazy how much things have advanced over the years but the whole dental thing was so trauma-filled for me. This vide is a BIG "aha" moment for me. So strange how so much good is coming out of the last 3 years of craziness. I can honestly say "thank you" pandemic for giving us all a "time out" - to learn what and who is important in life, hopefully, all of us learning that self love is everything. Thank you KZbin and your algorithms who put content in my feed like this that help me as I realize how deeply and vastly my healing journey is taking me. It's not just the weight or the gray hair. It's not just the "imperfections" that through life, many of us try to hide or camouflage so that no one will notice and hurt or humiliate us. It's the burden we carry deeply inside, that causes us to shield our expressions of joy, that makes us feel unworthy, that makes us accept less than our value because we attach the lessening of our sense of value to these "imperfections." This video unlocked trauma I have felt since my first dental crown in the 5th grade. Yes. I'm 63, but healing never stops. I am so grateful to experience this even though it is at this age.

I grew up having crooked teeth on the top and bottom so there was no way of hiding them unless I covered my mouth with my hand or by smiling and not showing my teeth. Crazy enough I did not get bullied in school, but got bullied as an adult. If people would understand that many of us do take care of our teeth but can't afford dental work. Fortunately I was able to save money to get Invisalign and it changed my life. 2 years later I am now able to smile showing my teeth with confidence for the 1st time since I was a kid. However, I still find myself covering my mouth at times when I am at work or with a group of people, so that's something I am still working on similar to what Adrienne mentioned in her story.

I used to work at a dental school in Southern California. It is absolutely the best option if you cannot afford dental work in a dental office. They have to be a whole year in the classroom and observing and pass certain prerequisites to even touch a patient. So you are in good hands. Everything has to be double checked by an instructor who is a seasoned dentist. The pediatric department was very busy for us. They are already dentists. But they are specializing in children’s dentistry. So they are not practicing, they are actual dentists. You’re very lucky that you lived near a dental school that could take you in 😊🦷🪥 the dental school that I worked for was big in missionary work. So they would go to other countries and help children and adults get dental work. Also, a couple times a year they would open up the school to do free dental work on the public. A lot of people are afraid of dental work and that’s what keeps them from taking care of their teeth. It’s only expensive when you don’t go every year for your exam and cleaning. That’s when things start to break down, and you get cavities. As you can tell, I am pretty passionate about it Lol a lot of my family is in the dental field too 🦷😁 Your smile looks beautiful!❤️

Wow Adrienne, this couldn't have come at a better time. I am getting a dental implant after YEARS of work on my teeth. In a nutshell, in grade 5, a few friends and I were running around and I fell. My front adult tooth fell and I had to wear a removable tooth throughout elementary and high school. At some points it would break and that was humiliating. As a kid, I was always so embarrassed and scared it would break. To this day, I still have dreams of my fake tooth breaking. I've had braces, a 'Maryland bridge,' a root canal on the tooth next to it because that one started to die, etc. Etc. Thousands and thousands of dollars later, I'm now 30 years old and finally getting my implant after years and years of temporary fixes. In the meantime, I've had to wear invisaligns with a removable tooth but as an adult, I've grown comfortable to talk openly about it & I've found that every time I have, there has always been someone in the room who has either gone through something similar themselves or knows someone who has. Thank you for being open and vulnerable on a topic that doesn't really get talked about. Thank you for calling it "trauma" because tbh I never thought of it as that. But looking back and processing it as an adult, it really did impact me on a subconscious level that I didn't even realize. Sending lots of love and gratitude. ❤

I can definitely relate to your story Adrienne... most of my life I hated my smile to the point where I hated taking pictures of myself. Even when I did take pics, I did not like to show my teeth at all -- this led to anxiety and insecurity about my physical appearance. My teeth looked like it was pushed inwards and I had several overlapping tooths! So fast forward Jan 2021 in the height of the pandemic this was the moment I said to myself it's time to go to the dentist (I had to do two root canals and 1 tooth extraction) and get braces. Very much like you said, my family could not afford braces either but after finally stepping into an exciting launch of my career I could finally afford the treatment. Acknowledging how expensive it can be to invest in dental health, it's TRULY WORTH IT 100%. Currently, I am in the final stages of my Invisalign treatment and I've never felt more confident about my smile -- this was a truly life changing experience for me to the point where I'm socializing more often and I'm smiling way more!

I have learned not to get veneers but to live with your teeth being natural if they are healthy. I've had 4 root canals and 5 crowns put on. Crowns are no fun because you literally cannot eat sticky things like caramel, gummies, or anything with a lot of citric acid.

Thank you for sharing!! I’ve always loved your smile and never would have imagined the backstory to your smile. I almost cried when I heard you say you wanted to fix your smile for your baby. How beautiful is that! 🥰

Ouch! I grew up poor so going to the Dentist was a treat as you were suffering from a cavity, etc. I’m not sure why people think they need “perfect teeth”? It’s not that we all have wonky ones but staring at super white, straight and perfect smiles makes people seek perfection. Your teeth are beautiful!

I'm so glad that you shared your story. Because I myself lost confidence in my smile for years. After getting my veneers, things totally took a change, gain back my smile and confidence 😊

Wow, thank you for being open and sharing that personal experience. I can relate to feeling insecure about one's teeth, especially growing up surrounded by people with perfect teeth. Your bravery in sharing it publicly is truly inspiring!

So crazy, I came into this year saying this is the year I invest in my smile. Tomorrow I get a crown, next a wisdom tooth removal, then Invisalign, then a tooth replacement🙃. Love that you’re always open & find things everyone can relate to💕

I know the feeling! I finished wearing Invisalign 6 months ago and it was one of the best investments and decisions I've ever made. Wishing you the best on your journey!! 😃😃

Adrianne thank you for your transparency in putting this video out. I have a similar story. I have already spent so much money and I’m still not happy with the results. I’m very insecure. I want to be proud of my smile. I will call Dr. V.

Yes, here in Mississippi there is a teaching hospital that sees people who need dental work that can't afford it. I think it's a great option where someone would not have done anything at all. Great job on taking care of your dental health!

I hate my teeth they are very damaged due to poor care growing up and I am currently in the process of getting them fixed. I've gone through a few procedures already and my next one is coming up and I'm taking you uploading this video as a sign that my procedure will be successful and I will FINALLY love my teeth.

Adrienne, thank you so much for sharing your story with us. I can also relate to dental trama. Sadly my parents were unable to provide/ afford dental care, it was and still is embarrassing and humiliating to show my teeth. I’m not going to lie when COVID surfaced i was relieved we would wear mask. Anything to hide behind a mask. Needing so much dental work at a young age and now as an adult . You will see me in “ALL” my family pictures not smile or even covering my mouth. I feel so insecure. Family and friends will ask me all the time, why I don’t smile. Little do they know I have insecurities. I suffer from really bad anxiety just thinking about the dentist.😥 Slowly but surely I’ve been investing in my smile. I hope one day I will have the confidence to smile big in all my pictures.

I work in a dental office and unfortunately there are many not top notch doctors. We have more dental offices in one block than Starbucks! In our office we always recommend a night guard or Viveras retainers after implants, crowns and veneers. Elated you finally got the smile you wanted!!

I love this and trust me as someone with an 8 month old this is the first thing I want to teach him. To take care of his teeth and to do anything in my power for him to have a smile he is happy about. Because a smile says alot about you

Thank you for making this video! As a dental hygienist I cannot stress enough how important your smile/teeth are! I’m so sorry you had to go through that dental trauma but I’m so happy that you finally have your dream smile! Even I am insecure about my smile. I’m going to start my second round of orthodontic treatment with Invisalign to fix a few areas. Dental insurance is very inexpensive and even if you don’t have it, many dental offices offer a discount for self paying patients. Always ask for a discount, 90% of the time they will give you something. A beautiful smile is a huge confidence booster. Take care of yourself everyone. Let’s focus on self care this new year.

I am so familiar with the NYU and am terrified of going to the dentist because of that experience. This trauma has stopped me for going to the dentist for so long. I decided to go to the dentist two weeks ago, started a treatment that I’m not happy with. Finding a good dentist that knows your needs and can help you achieve your smile is hard especially in New York. I have desired to look for someone who can really give me that smile I’ve always wanted. Thank you for this video and being transparent with us. ❤ God bless! 🙏🏼

I have also gone through so much dental trauma in the last couple of years. 2 years ago I fell off an electric scooter and I broke my bottom front tooth and dislocated my jaw. I had to wait a year to receive the root canal and crown that I needed to repair my tooth which made eating very painful and I had to be careful about how I would chew my food. My mouth also became very crooked bc of my jaw injury and all my teeth shifted after this incident. It definitely pushed me to take extra care of my teeth, because you only get one set! Right now, I'm 3 months in to my braces treatment to straighten out my teeth and get them back in place. I can't wait to get them off and be able to smile freely and feel beautiful. My teeth have always been my biggest insecurity but I'm so grateful to have the opportunity to get them fixed. Dental solidarity with you and everyone in the comments!!! It feels amazing to know I'm not the only one.

Ok. This channel is so much better than the other channel you had. The other seemed like you were a show off. Here I can see your humble spirit because of your vulnerability and honesty. Thanks Adrienne for talking about dental trauma. I’ve had to fix something on one of my teeth for 22 years now after a botched dental fix. Thanks for inspiring me to go get it looked at again. I’m in tears actually.

I love your smile! And it’s so good to see you so smiley in pictures and videos! My teeth are BY FAR my biggest insecurity however I battle mentally with getting them done because on one end I’d love to feel confident and comfortable in my smile, but as a full time working single mon it’s hard to justify spending the money on myself when I could use it for bills/necessities etc. I also struggle because I feel it’s important to teach my son to love yourself as God made you. Seeing you find so much happiness in getting them done makes me a little more intrigued to take the leap! Thank you for this insight!

Thank you for sharing this story. My son had the same kind of trauma to his top front teeth. When he was in Elementary school. But he hit his teeth on a telephone pole running with his eyes closed. He had to have emergency surgery too. And his nerves was also showing. The Cap they put in kept falling out. So I stopped replacing it. The kids at his school called him Shark Tooth. He cried about that. But we saved up the money to get it fixed because it was going to cost us thousands of dollars. We was able to get them fixed by the time he went to high school. He has the Best Smile Ever. And he will be graduating college soon.

I was once told you inherit one of your parents teeth. Teeth are definitely a big deal especially if you are in media. I used to feel insecure cause of my dominoes on the bottom lol but now, I don't care. As long as I have good hygiene in the mouth and trying to stay with brushing flossing and cleaning. Ill be alright. I didn't grow up with the best dentist he jacked up my moms and brothers teeth but eventually I moved onto a referral and they helped me tremendously.

Thanks for your vulnerability, Adrienne. 7:01 wanted to comment that I called into NYU student dentistry while I was in grad school because a filling of mine had fallen out and I had no medical insurance. Other students had good experiences there, though I ended up not going because I was traveling to Mexico a few weeks thereafter and opted to get more affordable work there (since I wasn't in much pain). The price tag on these services is ridiculous in the US - one of our many health care issues.

I’m so grateful for this , I just went through something similar with my now 8 yr old son . March 2022 , he had an accident . The root canals didn’t last no more than 4 months. I know we have a long journey ahead on this dental journey .

You know what, I only just realized that it is indeed trauma. I recently had a baby and in the UK pregnant women and new mums are entitled to free dental care for a year or two (not even sure) coz I have NOT contacted my dentist. I have dreaded each visit since I was a child...wow! I am making an appointment asap! Thanks for this. xx
