My mom knew Patsy before she became famous. Mom said that she would play the little clubs around Norfolk Naval Base and my mom would go over on her leave days and listen. They struck up a friendship, hanging out whenever Patsy was in town. The crash happened the day after my 6th birthday and I remember mom crying for awhile. She said that a friend was killed in a crash and it was only later, when I told her i remember her crying but not the reason that she told me about Patsy. Mom had all her records.. I bet my mom's hanging out wherever Patsy's playing in Heaven. RIP Patsy Cline and Jeanne Coan Brown.

I learned of Patsy when I first viewed the movie A Coal Miner’s Daughter, Beverly D’Angelo played Patsy and the story, of course, is about Loretta Lynn (Sissy Spacek was amazing! What a great movie!) I wanted to hear Patsy sing her songs and bought a CD of her hits! I immediately fell in love with her voice! She was very good to Loretta, and her death was an enormous loss and staggering for Loretta. RIP Patsy & Loretta 🕊️🙏🏽♥️🎸

I bet the man that was describing what he saw was traumatized for a good while after that. He described bloody flesh hanging from the trees. Had to be horrific. Roger Miller actually ran thru the woods yelling their names hoping for survivors. He saw the crash site and their bodies. He too was probably traumatized by seeing the site. All those folks were good friends along with Dottie West, Loretta Lynn, Jeannie Seely and a few others. Most all of them are dancing and singing and watching over us in heaven.

Oh come on, most men and women of the time didn't get "traumatized". They had to much to do, without the time to sit around and analyze their feelings. Saddened, crying, effected, maybe even drunk, sure. Then went about living their lives. Yes, it was something bad that they would remember the rest of their lives. Just the other side of the coin. The good of remembering holding their child for the first time. Yes I am old enough to remember the times, and maybe we need a little bit more of Buck UP attitude today. Patsy and Loretta are the best. Just depending on my mood who's #1 and who's #2.

Scott, that larger metal piece looked like cast aluminum and I'd guess it to have a higher chance of being part of the engine more that the instrument panel. The Piper used a lot of cast to lighten the aircraft, and with it being buried the way it was in the crash, it might have leeched to the top over all this time. Spent many years working on aircraft, but this is just an observation from your excellent video. Be safe out there...

Read the crash report a few years ago, always a sad read. Randy likely had that 'get there-itis' that has killed many. I say this due to the fact the weather may have looked a bit more 'promising' on takeoff but your weather conditions at destination is equally or more important. Easy to sit in my armchair and say they should have waited...still listen to Patsy often, 'Crazy' still my favourite.x

Spatial disorientation is a very common cause for small aircraft accidents when non-instrument-rated pilots fly into conditions where they lose sight of the ground. Besides the Patsy Cline and JFK Jr. crashes, it also was likely a factor in the crashes that killed Buddy Holly, Jim Reeves, and Kobe Bryant… just to name a few. The horrors of a high speed impact crash are no joke. It is likely that a lot of tissue matter (and blood) was left behind, even after the scene was cleared of bodies and debris. In some ways, the soil around the crash site is also a final resting place for the victims. It’s nice to see they have a tasteful memorial there to remember the victims.

Loved Patsy Cline, her cover of "I fall To pieces" is my favorite. The plane was a Piper-PA24 Comanche. My son is a private pilot, we go up from time to time but the plane is a Cessna 172 4 seat single engine plane. I have no idea about the instruments in a Piper but in the Cessna the instruments are common sense to me. I don't know how to fly a plane from my elbow. My son will tell me to take the yoke/control while he does some navigating. I'll glance out the windshield for other planes or obstacles but I use the instruments to keep the plane level to the horizon. It's just a line through the center and a plane. You can keep the wings and nose right on that line or the plane nose can go above the horizon, below, tilt wings left or right and so on. I keep it right on that line. Another I use is the elevation we are at and keep it there. It's paramount to know what towers, mountains, buildings and there height in the area you are flying in and try to be above them. If you use those two and the compass you can keep the plane in the air. We have been caught in snow squalls where you can't see. Period. We are still here. I'm thinking the pilot did not check the weather, did not check heights of terrain, towers, etc. Did not trust his instruments (you don't have to be instrument trained to do that) and thought to climb above the clouds too late and crashed head long into the ground of that mountain/hill. J F Kennedy Jr. did the same thing in the water. He did not look at his instruments, if he had he would know he was not level, he was losing altitude and he was nosed right into the ocean.

The pilot had no business flying in IFR conditions which means he can not see the ground. He had no training or certification for flying in bad weather or night flying. He was doing both. That is such a biased statement it isn't even funny. The part about the pilots does have merit, but it is just like driving. You have to start somewhere. Every piece of equipment has defined design parameter that are not to be exceeded.

A sad story for sure, thank you for sharing!!! I was somewhat surprised to see how you were allowed to use your metal detector at the crash scene. I remember seeing a video, quite a while back, where a group of people led by a KZbinr (sorry, I don't remember his name) were given the opportunity to metal detect the site of the plane crash that killed Ronnie VanZant along with some of the other members of their band, Lynyrd Skynyrd. Amazingly, some of the people onboard that plane survived. They were able to find several pieces of the plane, and a bunch of coins that were being used in a poker game onboard the plane at the time of the crash. That group went through a very long process of gaining permission to metal detect on what is privately owned property.

Scott Randy Hughes took Airplane lessons from the same CFI(Certified Flight Instructor) as Jim Reeves. A male country singer who was well known around the same time as Patsy Cline. He died in a plane crash a year later. In similar circumstances and similar weather conditions. He was not an instrument rated pilot either. They Called Jim Reeves "Gentle Jim". Very nice and respectful video Scott. Thankyou for sharing. I was only 3 months old when this terrible accident occurred. My parents were big country music fans and often listened to Patsy Cline, Cowboy Copas and Hawkshaw Hawkings music. Randy Hughes should never have attempted to fly into instrument meteorological conditions under any circumstances since he was not instrument rated. It's that "get there itis" that has caused so many pilots to make really bad decisions that has killed more pilots and passengers than anything else. May they all rest in peace. I believe that curved metal piece your metal detector found is actually a piece of the nose wheel assembly from the crashed plane, which is made out of magnesium and thats why its so badly corroded. The nose wheel assembly on a Piper PA-24 Comanche is only 6 inches in diameter. The reason I know this is because I worked on Piper aircraft as an FAA licensed A&P Mechanic for over 10 years. I have replaced several nose wheel assemblies over the years and I just know what I'm looking at when it comes to aircraft parts. I agree the other piece is whats left of a coat hanger.

Fascinating video Scott. Great job. Not only was Randy Hughes a most incompetent pilot, he most definitely made the wrong decision to get in the air that day . RIP Patsy, you were certainly among the very best.
@Ron-vq3zl
@Ron-vq3zl Жыл бұрын
I had read somewhere, about the fact that Jim Reeves & Randy Hughes had both had the same flight instructor. I've also seen it stated in print, that this particular flight instructor, supposedly had a bad reputation, for passing, or graduating some of his "celebrity students" even though some of them weren't able to successfully complete certain steps of their training! It's also been written that this flight instructor was also known for not encouraging some of his students to become "Instrument Rated!" Meaning that they never completed training to be able to read and rely on their Altimeter and other gauges, in the event that they would ever lose visual contact, with the ground beneath them! It's been written that Randy Hughes had never become "Instrument Rated" & that this most assuredly played a large part, in this tragic crash! As for Jim Reeves, this flight instructor is said to have "passed" and/or graduated Jim, even though, during his training; he had always become too afraid to perform the "Stall Test!!" This is where, during flight training, students are instructed to intentionally stall their planes' engines, then restart them, and regain control of their planes. It's been written also that Jim Reeves supposedly never became "Instrument Rated" either!

On June 14, 1961 Patsy Cline was in a head on car crash that nearly claimed her life. She insisted that the people in the other car be treated first (2 of the 3 occupants in that car would later die in hospital). Her friend Dottie West heard the news about the accident and was one of the first people on the scene. West helped remove glass from Clines hair and face and she would spend a month in hospital recovering from her injuries. As we know Patsy Cline was killed in a plane crash on 5th March 1963 on her way home from a concert, Dottie West who was also at the same concert offered Patsy Cline a lift home in her car but she refused as she was anxious to get home to her children. On 8th March 1963 Jack Anglin was killed in a car crash on his way to Patsy Cline's memorial service. On the morning of his death, Anglin first attended the joint services of Cowboy Copas and Randy Hughes then the memorial for Hawkshaw Hawkins before heading to the barbershop to prepare for Patsy Cline's memorial service. It was the haircut that made Jack Anglin late and put him in a rush to get to Cline's service on time, causing him to speed and lose control of his vehicle, he died on impact of a fractured skull. On 31st July 1964 Jim Reeves (aged 40) died in a plane crash Jim Reeves recommended Dottie West to RCA Records. On 4th September 1991 Dottie West would die at the age of 58 of injuries she received in a car accident, like Cline she refused to be helped first as she didn't believe her injuries were as bad.
