Not the biggest fan of Little Mermaid either, but I'll go out on a limb and say "give up your voice for a man" wasn't the message. The film firmly establishes that A. Ariel's preoccupation with having legs preceded her crush on some guy; B. trading her voice put Ariel at a severe disadvantage (Eric WANTED her to have a voice and she only truly succeeded in escaping the friendzone when she got it back); C. her decision to trade her voice was prompted by teenage stubbornness after her father took her crush on some guy and decided to be racist about it; D. "she who holds her tongue" was Ursula's idea, it's framed as manipulation. Peter Pan, however, can go screw itself. A lot of little issues add up. Captain Hook's plans make very little sense. Tinker Bell's redemption arc was weak. The Darling children are boring. The Lost Boys act like trash. The mermaids act like trash. The Indians are BEYOND cringe, they are uber-cringe and I feel unclean. But most of all, Peter himself is not the character I feel should win at the end of the day, not when he proudly targets people for psychotic pranks that include chopping their goddam hands off. I *will* defend Alice in Wonderland to the death. I too don't care about the stoner culture embracing it, the most I've ever partaken of that culture is a couple of brownie edibles, but what REALLY sells the film for me is the relatable struggle. Alice wants life to be upside down ... until she experiences an upside-down world and she realizes you can't reason with people if they don't have reason. To me that's a good message: you can be a good person and the hero of your own story even if the world isn't on your side, and most of the time it will be a living hell, you'll probably lose your mind, but it's better than siding with the assholes for no reason. Just in general I like your ranking, Natalie. You were up front about being subjective, and the rankings based on your criteria paint a good picture of the strengths and weaknesses of many of these films. A note to all the historians out there: you're allowed to hate Snow White. If you think being "the one that started it all" makes it the bar of quality 85 years later, I have nothing to say to you.

So, will defend some of the classic Disney films. Here we go: - The Little Mermaid: as others have said, it's about following dreams, finding your voice, and fighting against being imprisoned and wanting to see the world - Cinderella: she really just wants to find a way out of her life and go have fun and go to a ball, then a prince basically stalks her (I mean, this is a stretch and the Disney animation isn't the strongest interpretation of the character ngl) - Sleeping Beauty: this film is less about Aurora and Prince Phillip, and more about the Fairies vs Maleficent, which is EPIC - Snow White: yeah I got nothin'

Only because I think you're forgetting some things. she wanted to be a part of the human world before she even saw the guy. most of her experiences in the movie was just rebelling against what her father wanted for her. The villain is a little weak and Tarzan's gorilla friend is kind of annoying, but everything else about the movie is great. You've got the S-tier Phil Collins music, the wonderful B-plot about family, the endearingly awkward romance between Tarzan and Jane, and TREE SURFING.​@@user-dr2uy5or9t

I mean, the message of The Little Mermaid is not to "give up your voice." It's about following your dreams. The film says how it's a terrible thing to give up your voice, with Ariel giving it to Ursula. Ultimately its message is how no dream is too big or small. That you have a voice, and that you should embrace it. Eric couldn't really fall in love with Ariel until he finally heard her voice. I personally don't like The Little Mermaid, at least compared to other Disney movies, as I just find it kind of boring, but I think you got the wrong idea of what the message was.

I would suggest watching a video on The Little Mermaid like Linday Ellis'. The idea that Ariel "gives up her voice for a man" really dumbs down the story elements at play and it kind of perpetuates a view of the story that isn't reallly true. Of course The Little Mermaid is still a fairytale so it's not like it's very realistic about love or anything, but the criticism it gets for "sending the wrong message to girls" is usually not even what the film is saying in the first place. I'm not saying it'll turn into an A-tier movie for you, but it could provide a different perspective of the film.

I don't really think that's the message that Little Mermaid is trying to send out, that's the message Ursula is trying to send out, but she's pure evil, I think that the message Little Mermaid does convey is that you can still have a "voice" even if you lost your physical voice, that sometimes our actions can overcome our handicaps, so in a way it's really about her finding her voice through losing it. I don't know if that was fully their intent, but that's the nuance I take away from it and I like that, so I am going to stick with that. But I do get that maybe not all kids may understand that message, all I got from it when I was a child is Ursula is a baddie and needed to be defeated.

I absolutely agree with you on Brother Bear. I absolutely LOVE Brother Bear. Not only does the story show overcoming prejudice, but it also teaches people to be kind to animals and not judge animals just because they are certain species. The scene where Kenai realizes that the bear he killed was Coda’s mom is absolutely tear jerking. To me, the only Disney movie that outclasses Brother Bear is The Lion King.

Really surprised you haven't seen Up, i really recommend it, along with The Great Mouse Detective, Aladdin and the King of Thieves (more Robin Williams content), and The Rescuers 1&2. Also 100% here for a Lilo & Stitch re-watch, it hits waaayyyyy harder as an adult and easily became one of my favourites even though i didn't care for it much as a kid.

The message of “The little mermaid” isn’t to give up your voice for a man. That was an attempt of Ursula to manipulate Ariel as a way to handicap her in her courtship with Eric. Eric, however, falls initially for Ariel’s voice, and later on for her personality. On top of it all, Ariel regains her voice and it’s not until that happens that Eric can finally be “it was you all this time!”. I don’t get why people take the whole “give away her voice” as a literal message for the audience when the framing of the movie clearly disprove such message. It’s like saying that the message of “The lion king” is to run away from your problems just because Simba runs away and sings “Hakuna Matata”. It’s missing the forest for the trees.

4:44- Yeah, that's Fantasia 2000 (notice the 2000 below the title). I'm guessing it's some sort of sequel of the original Fantasia that came out in the early 1940s. I never watched Fantasia 2000, but I tried to watch Fantasia, and ended up sleeping through most of it.

Beauty and the Beast is one of my all time favorite movies period. Still love watching it today as a guy in his 30s. For the end of Pocahontas, a bit more than you remember Nat. Radcliff is about to shoot Pocahantas (or her father? Think it may be her father actually), a captured John, who is supposed to be executed, jumps in front of them to shield them, getting shot in the chest. The pioneers see how blood thirsty Redcliffe is and apprehend him themselves, putting an end to his evil and racist ways. The pioneers and natives make peace shortly after. John returns to England alone to try and get proper treatment for his wound, leaving Pocahantas with her tribe.

I also haven't seen The Incredibles since it was in theaters. My friends hate me for saying this, but I think it's such an overrated movie. And don't get me started on how the sequel has a villain with the exact same motivation as the first one (someone who believed in superheroes but then was disillusioned with them after a personal experience). I know people love The Incredibles, but don't expect me to binge the series anytime soon.

This is really fun and funny to watch on stream! Putting Brother Bear & Dinosaur THAT high and Little Mermaid that low (I think Ariel's depicted at very innocent and foolish to lose her voice for a man and that's her comeuppance, even if the ending is mega weak) is CRIMINAL. criminal!!! Every song from beauty and the beast is top-tier, can't say that about any other disney movie except maybe lion king. 1. Bell (favorite Disney song of all time) 2. Gaston 3. Be our guest 4. Beauty and the beast These are all arguably in the top 10 disney songs of all time. I just don't get how anyone can make the argument that this isn't the best disney movie. The message of the movie is great. Belle's yellow dress is the best disney princess dress. Beast is a compelling character. Gaston and the town are top tier examples of antagonists! All the side characters are magic household items.

If you're ranking the movies you've seen, I can assume you've never seen "UP". "Up" is a modern classic you should definitely watch. Also, now that you've watched a lot of super hero movies on your channel, you should reconsider watching "The Incredibles." You will appreciate it more now.
