This is the first time I have seen the engine room in such detail. My father was in the engine room when the ship broke apart. In the first video Dennis pointed out where my father would hand his wedding ring on a hook before going down to the engine room. 50 years went by in a flash. RIP LRT. Now Dennis is there with his mates.

Sorry for both of your losses. May i ask a short history of the ship and what happened to it? No disrespect intended i apologize if it comes across that way.

I was a crew member of the USCGC “Mackinaw” when the Morrell went down. We crisscrossed the search area for a full day and night... finding only one deceased Morrell crewman. When we threw a line to snag the body, the frozen fingers on his hand caught the hook... incredibly eerie. A terrible storm and a terrible loss.

Spectacular, haunting spectacle... having read about this ship, breaking in two but the stern half running around in the stormy waters for some time after, ramming the bow section and all, engine still ahead full, sinking miles apart. And the harrowing following 40 hours for Dennis Hale... I felt haunted watching this even though I wasn't quite born then. Excellent work, thanks for sharing.

It's hard to believe that the Morrell's stern sailed on for another 5 miles without its head before finally sinking.😮
@jaybarber682 жыл бұрын
I believe the steam engine was so heavy, that it sank a bit, without a bow. This lifted the forward section out of the water, so the stern didn’t take on water, until the engine ran out of steam, this would explain why it’s 5 miles away from the bow.

I met Dennis Hale, the sole survivor of the wreck. He spoke in the basement of the Fairport Library in Fairport Harbor, Ohio. Hearing him tell his story was an experience I'll never forget!

James Chill he was! It’s one of the most moving moments of my life, hearing him tell his story. A friend of mine’s father delivered his mail for years out in Rock Creek, and had good things to say about him as well.

I saw him speak in Port Huron back in 95 or 96. It was a moving story, especially to hear it from himself!

The interior of the ship is incredible, to see the line of spanners still hanging on their hooks focused the mind on the men that used those tools, monitered the gauges, adjusted the valves! Likewise, seeing the watertight doors and locking dogs, wash basin and stairs emphasise the fact that this space was occupied by people, crewmen, betrayed by their vessel breaking apart, consigning then, bar one, to die horribly. The survivor spoke touchingly about his experience, as horrific as it was.

Terrific video! Shame the zebra mussells are obscuring alot of exterior detail..

As an electrician that served in the Navy, I can tell you one thing, the sight of that 'live' front switchboard is scary. Yes there is a wooden rail across for you to hold on to, but one bad toss in a rough sea and you're thrown up against live circuits. :O

Hey Shane love your video of the engine room. I did the murky video back 20 years ago or so that is on you tube. No zebra mussells that deep at that time but visiblity was no as good. Would love to talk to you about your recent exploits and maybe share some stories. I've got quite a bit of video from back in the day without the zeb's on everything. Thanks Diver Dan

Nickalus Clayton The Fitzgerald is off-limits to any type of diving at this point. Not to mention it's also in 530' of water making it extremely dangerous if not nearly impossible to scuba dive, so much so that only two people are known to have done it.
