My DIY Metal Bed Frame Painting Process

I am slowly working on our guest bedroom, but I couldn't wait to show you how I transformed the metal bed frame we bought. I bought this metal bed frame for about $20-25 (can't quite remember) on FB. It's a light gray, but I really wanted to turn it black. So I ended up using 2 different painting styles to paint this bed into the color that will match my DIY stands (here's the video for them: • DIY Budget Friendly Me... ). Annnd (no shocker here), it's extremely budget friendly and really easy to do. 220 Grit Sand Paper: can find at any home improvement store, Walmart, Amazon, etc.

I bought a brown iron bed by mistake & will paint it black. It hasn’t been out together yet so I’ll spray paint the whole thing. Did you paint the bottom part of the frame with a paint brush because it was already set up?

Yup! That’s exactly what I did. I didn’t want to undo the whole bed. I still lightly sanded it first though.

I painted my bedframe with Rustoleum satin, and it looks too shiny. Now it’s set back up. It was a pain to take apart. Could I go over with paint and a brush instead of spray paint this time with the matte paint?

I don’t see why you wouldn’t be able to. The paintbrush may not give it as smooth of a look as spray paint, but it could also give it a fun textured look.

I have the white metal bed from ikea, I want to either paint or hold, or paint it green with gold posts… should I prime it first? Or just sand it?

Honestly, I would just sand it. I tried priming once before on a different metal project thinking that would be enough. It flaked off the next day:/ you don’t have to sand very much or vigorously. You just want there to be enough texture and grooves for the paint to adhere to. Hopefully this helps! Good luck with your project:)

As long as you sand the metal a little bit, I think it should be okay to not use primer. The main thing is that you don’t want to paint on smooth metal because the paint won’t stay.

Because I didn’t want to disassemble the entire bed to get it out of the room. So I painted the rest by hand.

In the long term, how has the paint held up?

It’s still as good as the day I painted it:) That’s where the light sanding before spray painting comes into play. It gives the paint a better hold.

It’s best to lightly sand the metal first before spray painting so the paint can adhere a lot better
