There were some comments regarding the hissing sound that the mic makes inside the booth, turns out it's not my preamp set too high, but it's my bluebird mic itself. I only had the Bluebird mic at the time, so I couldn't compare to how other condenser mics sounded (regarding self-noise). I recently purchased the Neumann TLM103 and I can hear a big difference in the self-noise. I just can't believe I've been using a defective mic for almost 13 years... Anyways, if you're curious, check out this video I made comparing my new TLM103 to my Bluebird to hear what I'm talking about : kzbin.info/www/bejne/f32agK2td7ejqa8 Thanks as always, and subscribe for more music content and covers! - Ken

"defective" is kind of a misnomer.. obviously (most) $300 mics are going to have considerably more self-noise than a $1k neumann. I say most because there are some (Lewitt LCT 440 for example) that are on par with the neumann in that $300 range. Just bought the lewitt, totally psyched. :D

@18 Hands Most mics I see people buy have a cardioid polar pattern, and will definitely pick up audio from behind. I personally just covered the back of my AT2020 with thick foam, as you can't change its polar pattern. I'd recommend just getting some pencil/shotgun condenser mics (can get two Lyx SDPC-2 for a hundy, for stereo) to limit picking up background noise. Most issues people are trying to solve with these cheap sound booths can be fixed by lowering the gain on the mic, and running it through some VST plugins to negate background noise. Here's my basic VST setup with [EQ] > [Background Filter] > [Compressor] > [Gate] :: imgur.com/gallery/rqN9Gyd

For anybody watching and broke, I think another way to do it if you live in the USA is to get those velcro command strips (it's like sticky tape that can hold up to 10 pounds and has velcro on the other side) and put it around the ceiling and then put the rest on the blankets and then stick/unstick the velcro on and off when you need it. Saves you from having to do the PVC work.

Man this was great... THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO!!!! I made some adjustments to your design though. check them out! 1. I used Velcro instead of nails ..helps with Longevity and with break downs and set ups 2. I went with 1" PVC pipe over 3/4" (allows velcro more surface to grip and handle weight better) 3. I Doubled up on the moving blankets (this is why the Velcro is better as well) 5 for outside including top and 3 for inside.. this makes it more reflective and the air between the two layers of blankets helps with absorbing the sound.. And it really works ..amazing sound booth!!

Mogammi Gold studio xlr cables cut out a lot of hissing too. I knew a guy that was using a stage mic cable with his condenser mic and the cable had metal connectors. There was consistent hissing in your audio....it wasn't ambient or background noise ...when you went silent for a couple of seconds, the hissing was very present , even inside the booth....what was your mic connected to?....if it wasn't connected thru a usb audio interface , that has phantom power , or a mixer with built-in phantom power...then that's the cause of your hissing ...

The best would keep an AC on in another room so that there is some cool air traveling through the apartment/house.

To answer your question, yes, it will help dampen the sound. I live in an apartment and I received no complaints from neighbors after I created this booth

ace stephens Definitely! I noticed it after a watching it a few times... wish I could go back lol It’s way too hot and that’s why it’s so hissy. Will make sure for my next videos to turn it down. Thanks for watching!

Hey Ken, do you have the exact measurements for this Booth? I need one the exact size, height etc.
@kenisinoregon2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching the video! The height was 6ft, width 2ft and length was 3ft. You can customize all of that depending on how much you cut.

MrChickenking44 to be honest, not really. It did make my vocals less reverby but not boxy. Thanks for watching!

kenisinoregon thanks for the reply. I do my recording in my garage and it is quite big with a high ceiling, I’ll give this a go. Thanks

I don’t have much free space in my bedroom what do you recommend I do
@kenisinoregon6 жыл бұрын
Lonely Variety Thanks for watching! If you have limited space, then I recommend you creating like a two piece panel sound barrier with a moving blanket. I think that would help with the reverb, plus to keeping it down for your neighbors
@ToBeLowkey6 жыл бұрын
Did this help with your mixing and mastering of your vocals?
@kenisinoregon6 жыл бұрын
It helped my vocal recordings sound less "reverby" which helped with my mixing. Since I can always add reverb later in the mix.

what microphone and stand do u use?
@kenisinoregon4 жыл бұрын
Hi Robbie, I use the Bluebird by Blue Mic and I use a PA stand since I have the reflection filter. Don't remember the exact brand, but here is something similar (6ft PA Stand): www.ebay.com/itm/Speaker-Stand-Professional-Tripod-Structure-4-6ft-SINGLE-HPS-200S-Durable/223935976708?hash=item34239fd504:g:e7EAAOSwjdFeX3g8 Thanks for watching and subscribe if you'd like!

What mic stand is that?

It’s actually PA stand that I purchased on Amazon! I needed something sturdy enough to hold the sound panel. If you look up PA stands on Amazon, you should be able to find a few. Hope that helps!

How effective has it been with cutting the sound down so you don't disturb your neighbors?
@kenisinoregon6 жыл бұрын
no complaints so far! :) And it's been over a year now
@MageGrayWolf6 жыл бұрын
@@kenisinoregon Good. I was thinking of using this basic idea to create a faux inner wall to help control sound levels in a room. (I'm moving my parrots into the room and one has a scream of around 4000 Hz) I was thinking I might need to do more than just moving blankets, but I still need to keep it cost effective. One thing I've been finding effective to control the sound in my case is a stack of towels on top of the cage. I do two stacks of ten towels each and cover two sides of the cage that face out and to the door. This has cut the 4000 Hz frequency I hear from my bird in half, with no other treatment to the room or problem areas. I'm working on making a more dedicated sheet of towels to use that will be held together with zip ties.
