I walked a certain Dog in a shelter for months, we had a really deep Connection of friendship and Trust. People told me to adopt him, but I had a lot of reasons Not to, starting with No Time for an own Dog and- with him having a high prey Drive and a possessive streak- my Cat. Yes, maybe I would have been able to train him that this Cat wasnt Prey, but Family. With a Lot , Lot of Patience, firmness and Work. But I am certain that one day my Cat would have been dead...maybe Not hunted, but "murdered": Out of sheer jealously. This Dog wasnt the Type to share, Not with people, Nor with other animals. Some Things are Not worth the risk. My Cats are Family. And my Home is a save space for me...Not a place who one Part of my Family should have to fear for their own live. I told the one who tried to encourage me to adopt this Dog a firm No. I Loved this Dog, He Loved me,but I would never, never risk the life of my Cat.

Our dog actually found our cat as a tiny kitten at the back of our property and they are now the best of friends. However, we were very cautious when the kitten was very small, and supervised them very carefully. We also did NOT declaw our cat. For one, it’s cruel, but it also keeps the dog in line if she gets to be too much. We must never forget that our dogs and cats are by nature predators, and make sure they have lots of opportunities to play and chew on appropriate things. We also must protect other pets and children at all times.

@@jeanieolahful My GSD puppy 4mths was attacked by an evil cat who pretended to be friendly, then a few days later deeply clawed her face. My sister [cats owner] thought this was funny, had done it deliberatly to teach my pup to respect the cat. As she is a Working Bred GSD, she very nearly lost her cat, then had to keep it safe from my dog. Same dog helped herd her 4 guinnie pigs back into thier run. I hate cats, I like garden birds, watched cats spree kill, then just leave the bodies and go home to be fed.

As a German hunter... Man, when a Weimaraner kills cats, that's what they were bred to do. Not much of a difference for a Weimaraner between a fox or a cat or a marten. Why get a Weimaraner when you want a pet, why not a collie or a Labrador (not working line obviously). Their silver coat is the downfall of the Weimaraner, people get them for their look, not their qualities. Respect to Leerburg for also acknowledging that this is just the nature of the Weimaraner, and that the owners here have unrealistic expectations. Edit: I have no doubt that you can train a Weimaraner to accept a cat, a Kangal to greet strangers friendly, a hound to go on a walk with you without sniffing the ground or a Greyhound to stay in place when a rabbit runs by. I just want to point out that with certain breeds you should be prepared to see certain behaviours. Those may not be there in all individuals of the breed, and you certainly can train dogs to behave even opposing to their breed characteristics - but it will be easier for dog as well as owner when people are aware of what their dog was originally bred to do and is likely to behave like without further training.

I always thought Weimaraners were not agressive, predatory or fighther dogrs, to me they looked kind of gooffy and fragile, created just for tracking and barking, I even watched a couple of Malinois being "malinois" interacting with a very large and sturdy Weimaraner, the poor creature was terrified and ran away from them. I´m not saying Weimaraners are not good dogs, just simply tought they were kind of soft and shy

@@tasha_111_ Thanks! I kinda do feel with the owners - they sure were shocked when the Weimaraner killed the kitten. But it wasn't wrong of him to do that. Weimaraners look so aristocratic that people often forget that they are hunters. Only when you've seen them covered in dirt and panting from the hunt, you realize that they aren't shiny companion dogs at heart, but rugged outdoor dogs... And, honestly, they are killers. Considered one of the most "game"/driven breeds here in Germany.
@tterexx426

@@personalDM Hey, i understand, and many videos here on KZbin deliver that kind of picture. As far as I know there are also breed differences in the USA and Europe, with the USA putting more of a focus on pointing qualities. Here in Germany I considered getting a Weimaraner as a first hunting dog (weirdly enough I do now own a Plotthound, an American breed which is extremely rare here...), but other hunters discouraged me from a Weimaraner as first breed. They said that they are way to "hard" and "sharp" dogs for a beginner. Not sure how to say it in English, but I think the word is "game", or just generally driven to kill wild game animals. Additionally to that they are a breed that used to be tested a bit on protection qualities - not personal protection, but the hunting tests included a test where the Weimaraner (same for German Long-haired and Wirehaired Pointers as far as I know) had to protect their owners backpack, jacket, or hunted animal and stay at this object and not let anyone else close than their owner. These tests do not exist anymore, and in the Weimaraners case even have been completely turned around: as the Weimaraner had gotten a reputation of being hard towards humans / too protective, it is by now the only hunting breed in Germany that is tested for friendliness towards humans during their hunting test! Long answer, sorry for that, but to put it short; i think many Weimaraners might still have that hard and driven streak in them, especially a predatory drive. You are probably right that that their drive doesn't compare to a Malinois drive, but then, which other breed does compare to a Mali anyway! (Except perhaps for the Jagdterrier, but they are so high drive that their brain isn't used anymore...) Showline breeding might have taken the edge off of many Weimaraners though.

My first Weimaraner/LabX also killed two cats, plus some rabbits and a squirrel or two. We also had two house cats that he was raised with from a puppy. He never hurt our cats. They lived together for 14+ years. FWIW, we never let our cats outside. Cats are better hunters/killers than any single dog. Plus they crap in everyone's garden or sandbox. Cat owners should keep their cats indoors or in a cattery. Keeps the cats safe and keeps the birds and chipmunks "safe". Cats don't need to go outside.

I have multiple dogs and have for years. Acds and Kelpies. I have cats, chickens, and sheep. Maybe my dogs are easy but I also let them all know that anything under my care is off-limits as far as hurting them goes. My dogs worked the sheep and chickens under my supervision. One of my barn cats did not like one of my ACDs and he did not like the cat. Too bad. The cat was off-limits. I don't want to judge though because maybe some dogs are very hard to train. My ACD has a very high prey drive. But he knew what I expected. I had inside cats and barn cats. I think you need a relationship with the dog so that they understand that you are in charge and you need to let them know exactly what is off-limits.

I used your muzzle conditioning videos and I really do recommend them highly if you have a dog that needs that piece of equipment. Clementine can be people aggressive though her prey drive is not as high as what you are talking about. Originally I thought a muzzle was a bad thing. I was worried about judgement and her not being comfortable. I did the muzzle conditioning and realized that dogs just get used to it like they would a leash. She waits patiently now while I put her leash on and holds her nose out for her muzzle. The peace of mind that comes with knowing she isn't going to connect with somebody, or in your case a cat, is invaluable. And its not even any kind of big deal for her to wear it. It took a few weeks before she was completely comfortable but now she knows when I pull it out it means we are going somewhere. And, yes, sometimes somebody feels emboldened to make a dangerous dog comment, but we just smile together because all dogs can bite. So this makes her about the safest dog in the neighborhood. She has improved significantly through training, but I still muzzle her as she isn't the type of dog to like strangers.

When my neighbour brought two kittens into our house he instantly knew they would belong to us and licked their butts after feeding (he is an intact MALE!!). He carefully took them with his teeth and sat them in front of his feeding bowl😂. (He has never experienced hunger, I must say). We could not believe this. Until today he is correcting (when they start scratching furniture or walking into the kitchen) and cuddling them. They are afraid of any other dog but him. Good Morning. This time it is sadly me. I have had German Shepherds over the last 40 something years. It never has mattered if they didn’t like cats or even killed cats when I get them. Near a year is the oldest GSD that I have gotten. They are introduced to the family cats and let known that the cats were there first. My first pup was the hardest. It took 3 times of putting her in a submissive position, looking at her eyes with a low deadly serious voice and let her know that cat was here first. Then I never leave them alone together for nearly a year. Always, with all my dogs, they accept what ever animal i bring into the fold as the pack. From within a month, they would protect them from any other thing. They’ll touch noses not to long afterwards if the cat doesn’t swat them, Quite often they’ll do a detour around the cat. Usually, the cats rules the house. If I get a pup and a cats as little ones, they grow up playing like two pups and sleeping together. Always, after a year, I do not need to watch them. Even though they accept what is the families as the pack, they chase others out of the yard. Until this house with the cement fence, they have never caught a cat. The dogs always stop at the property boundry and the cats scurry off. Unfortunately, not at this house. My neighbors across the street, an elderly couple, were put in a nursing home that were feeding feral cats. With no one to feed them they began finding families to feed them. At night, they would come into my yard looking for food, mice and shelter. Every morning, my dogs would follow their trail. Daily a couple of Toms, especially one Tom would tease my dogs and saunter slowly along the other side of the fence teasing them. The front fence are rod iron bars in cement where my dogs peak their heads through. The Tom’s put my dogs in a tizzy. My dogs are out only when I am home, which is a lot because I am retired. When I hear that back, I go out and have them leave the cat alone, back off the fence and quiet down. They get scolded and brought in when they have the bark that sounds like they want to kill them. Last night, I let them out the front and watched them, that no cat was there as they run out, as routine. The cats can escape through the bars in the front. I leave the door open so I can listen. I heard a barking, like one dog was to rough with the other, so I walked around back to the breezeway and Onyz ran immediately off because she new she was in trouble and Ryder had a cat pinned in the corner. I boomed with my voice to leave and her and the Corgi ran off. I talked to to the cat and it ran and limped under the barbecue fire place. With the adrenaline in its system, I couldn’t tell if my dogs had got it, because I wasn’t there to see if it was bit or shaken. It was feral, so I couldn’t pick it up to bring to the vet. I was going to wait and see if it was there in the morning and would throw a blanket. I brought my dogs out to potty and stood in front of the bring fireplace wood rack in closure. The dogs wouldn’t even glance that way knowing they did wrong and my beyond displeasure. Sadly, this morning, the kitty was dead, so they did get here. This cat wasn’t the first. A year after I got here and I heard them barking strangely in the back field and ran back their expecting them to have caught a large rat or something. It was the two of them together and it was a pregnant cat. She ran behind a sheep shelter and died within minutes. I was so upset, I pick her up and put her on a blanket and scolded them pups heart broken while I put them on a long stay next to her. This is why Onyx ran for when I caught them this time. Onyx is my mouser. Don’t know what to do other than walk the yard with them each time I go out. At dark it the hardest because I can’t see. I can walk these dogs anywhere and bring them to outdoor cafes and they could care less if a cat walked under their legs or if other dogs lunged at them because they know I got it under control and they are just so happy to go and say hi to everyone and everything. They are super social. They love vets, mail people and workers, but still will protect, as when a stranger got on my back deck, they tried to lunge through the window to get him. I just don’t know how to stop the territorial kill any cat the gets in our yard that is not ours. My cats go outside and they always know its family and lay with them. Dogs! I love them, but sometimes I hate them when they do this. I usually ignore them and won’t let them look at me for a whole day afterwards. That is just me. It’s heart breaking. I will resort to walking the perameter and just have to not neglect that. I have a half acre. The will stop persuading anything I call them off of. They hear the deadly tone in my voice and know I won’t brook it. Shepherds are sensible to tones of voice and respond to quiet serious commands very well. They also can’t stand you being seriously disappointed and disgusted at them. They love affection praise and guidance and sillyness when they are good. I hope this is the last one. Ugg

Well I have been keeping a closer eye on them and prevented them getting a feral cat. It’s just so strange. The vet has a cat that walks inches from their noses and the sit or lay quietly. They are not reactive to cats on walks or eating out and laying under tables. They lay happily serene. I can bring 20 cats into my family and they would learn to accept and protect them all. Of course there would be watching and guiding the first few weeks to months depending on the cat or the dog. In the end it’s always family . They will protect family cats with all their worth, but God forbid a strange and feral cat enters our yard. Any Of my friends can bring their dogs into my home, little or small. If they’re yippy and snappy, my dogs just stay away from them and ignore them.

I have the same problem with my rescue dog. We adopted her a year ago at 2.5 years old and she was fine at first just chasing the stray cats out of our yard. She even grabbed 2 times some cats but let them go without a scratch, I know cause I saw them passing later seeming totaly fine. At walks she doesn't mind cats at all and even when we go to a pet store with cats around she will behave. One really stressful day for the dog because my sister came for the winter with a dog, cat and chickens, she grabbed a stray kitten in front of the other dog and wouldn't let go until she killed it. We were very upset and since then taught her to use the muzzle. She also eats cat poop if she finds in the yard so it's a double win, cause the pool will stick on the muzzle so she can't eat it and if she grabs a cat with her paws she can't kill it. I have been trying to train her to be more tolerant with them stray cats that hang around the property but doesn't seem to work when off leash. Unfortunately I saw a very sick kitten today in the middle of the garden and as I got inside the house with the dog to think of a way to help it, she managed to open the door and go for her second kill before I even realise it 😞. I am heartbroken and seeing this video I see what I was afraid of...that she found fulfillment in her first kill, so now she will go for it any chance she can get. Now I will also put a little safety lock so she can't open the door like that again...😢

My parents dog, Brutus, a large Great Dane who’s around 2 (I think ) years old recently got ahold of a small cat (not kitten but not full grown) in our backyard. When we first got him we had two cats, both of which were pretty much full grown when he was introduced in the house, and he never showed aggression towards them. Him and our other two dogs have been primarily outside dogs for the past couple of months due to us getting two new cats, both of which are kittens. One of our cats came from the same litter of the cat he got ahold of outside. I don’t know what to do - considering he’s not my dog, he’s my moms, and I’m a teen so it’s not like I can actually do much. I don’t want him to be put down or anything, but I just do not want him here. I hate that I hate that dog now.

they were just feeding cats to the dog basically. That said, owners of outdoor cats should know they're putting their cat at risk of getting killed quite violently by a predator like a dog or coyote. It can be quite a horrible way to die -- keep your cats indoor they will live longer better lives. And dog owners need to stop deluding themselves about their dog's prey drive. I see people saying their dog is "trying to play" with rabbits or cats, when it is obviously hunting them. Dogs are animals, literally all of them have the instinct to hunt prey. Some are worse at hunting lol, but they all have the potential to kill smaller animals, and it is quite likely that they will if you let them Also, outdoor cats are extremely bad for the environment and have driven song birds extinct in some places. I love cats, but it really isn't right to have them outdoor unless you need a barncat.

We used to have a Deutsch-Drahthaar-Mix, he killed one cat and would have killed more if given the chance. He wanted to kill sheep and also attacked one smaller dogs, which he mistook for prey and shook him. We had to muzzle and leash this dog. Be carefull! You can't get that out of the dogs when the hunting instinct is so strong. With herding dogs, the hunting behavior is usually interrupted, killing is not intended. You can manage that better. But this? I say no, because of my experience. If your dog lurks outside the door of the cat in the other room.. and this day and night - you can be sure that he would kill this if he could! This dog also always sat in front of the aquarium and stared at the fish. We often had to cover it with a cloth, otherwise it would have gone on forever. Training not to do this is one thing, respecting the dog's nature is another

I have a four year old boxer mix who grew up with our cat a couple months ago she started barking at the cat. I was concerned, and the terrible thing happened. I came home two days ago and my cat was Dead in the yard in the fenced in yard, not torn up, but clearly neck broken like it was shook to death My dog never showed any signs before I have pictures she’s sleeping together with the cat. I wonder what caused that I have two other cats and my boxer mix is not interested in those. It is really strange. Any ideas?

Quite frankly it was caused by you not watching your dog. My idea would be to watch your dog and try to desensitize them to cats but that my not be possible. My childhood cat was killed by two loose boxers, and I’ve yet to read a story hear that says “I was watching my dog or had them on leash when it happen” always loose. So watch your dog and training

My dog killed a cat that was in my backyard recently, I dont own cats and never seen my dog actually killed anything before. My yard is wood fence all around and usually my dog just barks at them thru the fence. Cats from the neighborhood always climb up on the fence but I never seen one actually go in to my yard while my dog is there barking at it. One second my dog is barking the next second my dog shaking something in it's mouth before I knew it there was a young cat badly injured on the ground I tried to help the cat but it died shortly after. Our Rottweiler started to kill cats at 6 years old. A neighbor moved in next door with many outside cats. We didn't realize she was killing cats at first & later found 2 dead cats semi-buried in the yard. We know she killed 4 cats. We put in a 6 foot privacy fence & wish I'd thought about using a muzzle. We always warned people about our cat killing dog. She died at 14 years old in the mid-80s. We never got another dog.

This is a rule for most everyone I know in rescue you just DONT leave dogs alone with cats period. I don't think dogs should attack cats in their family houses. Outside is different but cos they chase should not mean they should kill them. All dogs are predators but the one in the video is over the top. He mustn't get another cat, it is too dangerous and not fair. My current Lurcher bitch still chases cats or tries to on the street but doesn't touch mine who are much older and were there when I brought the Lurcher home as a pup of 7 weks. They are left alone together as well. Even my first lurcher drew the line at our cats and he was an intact male and bigger than my current one. I often looked after friend's dogs too but they never ganged up. My bitch sometimes has a glint in her eye when she looks at the one cat who now loves her, but once she and that cat wanted a bit of chicken, they both begged, and I gave the cat first and the dog waited her turn. I looked after a Rottie collie cross for 4 years, he lived with the same cats both of whom had kittens on his bed, and the daughter cat had a hard time with her last one, who was dangling on the cord for a while. I was watching but didn't even get up from my chair. The Rottie was running around the cat with tears in his eyes, it was freaky but lovely, he truly adored both cats. I called him the midwife after that. The mother cat and he were like husband and wife. I wouldn't leave or wouldn't have left my new born kittens alone with either Lurcher but the Rottie cross was a perfect gent. Rotties will pick up smaller dogs and shake them to death, and he tried twice. One dog came up unexpectedly and with the other one, it was a competion for a bitch. He knew them and the other male was a substantial size. I couldn't get him done cos he wasn't mine really but I was angry. He could have killed my cats in the same way, he would chase everything on the road like the Lurchers who both dislike/disliked other strange dogs.

It’s likely that the dogs intention was never to kill, just to chase like the dog chasing the mailman. They have no plan for when they catch him, they just want to catch him. or they simply don’t know exactly how to. Yet. Hunting doesn’t come naturally to all dogs, I would say if your dog keeps catching cats eventually they will learn to shake out of instinct

Jeeze. Letting your dog kill a kitten is horrible. Stop putting cats in his way. Very cruel. Good for Mr. L for telling it like it is. Re home the dog to a good family without cats or just stop bringing cats in. Personally I would NOT put a muzzle on a dog for more than a few minutes. Do not make this dog’s life miserable. Shish!

Muzzle make a dog's life so miserable as the collar in his neck does. And it's very dangerous to give a dog with aggression problems to someone else. The best solution is what Ed said. Don't get another cat and wear muzzle in walks. Every else is dangerous and irresponsible

We had a dog from a rescue center when I was a teen. He was a beautiful shepherd (mix?) with long hair and already grown-up. Although he was very sweet with us, he had aggression problems with other people and a strong prey drive. Humans he never really bit, it was always a fake attack (which was still scary for the individual person, of course). In the first few weeks at home he killed one of my budgerigars (my favourite one) when nobody else was at home (he never did that again). He chased cats and I witnessed from afar (across the field) him killing a cat. I was completely shocked, as I was used to dogs chasing cats but I never saw a dog killing a cat (by grabbing it and shaking it wildly). Once he chased a sheep that escaped out of its fence so it stumbled and tumbled down hill. He hunted deer whenever he saw one and only returned after half an hour, completely out of breath. He killed a weasel once. Our vet recommended castrating him so he would become calmer and it would also reduce his prey drive. He never killed a deer, of course (only a pack of wild dogs or wolves would be able to do that), still I knew that whenever he could catch a cat, he would kill it. Even after castration a similar incident with a cat as described before happened two more times. Although I did a lot of training with him over time and he responded very well, he was not responsive anymore once his prey drive kicked in. So we did exactly what you were talking about: we rented (we did not buy it) an e-collar! I was so nervous and I felt like I was betraying my dog! When we saw a cat I called him back, although I knew he would not listen. I pressed the button at the highest level with sweaty fingers. Only seconds later he whined loudly, at the same time stopping in full run, and returned to me. He hid behind my back out of fear of the seemingly dangerous cat. The second time we saw a cat that week he already hesitated. I called him back and he almost would have listened, but when the cat started to run away, he ran after it. The same procedure as before, but that was it. We returned the collar and he never tried to run after a cat anymore, especially once I called him back. Sometimes when he saw a cat first he would return to me and stay at my side without me telling him to. (Maybe he wanted me to protect him from the cat?) With time he became a completely normal, well-behaved dog: no aggression towards strangers on walks, territorial barking yes, but well managable (he would lie down on his place when told so and keep quiet), his prey drive became less and less over the years, and cats, of course, where not considered prey anymore, rather a very suspicious species he chose to stay away from. 😅

Cat people are ridiculous. Shove their cat with a dog and then label the dog as vicious when an obviously predatory dynamic plays out. Dog kills a cat because of management failure of the cat owner, and it's all "put down the dooog" meanwhile they think its cute when mr. tibbles kills smaller animals at will. The worst pet owners, hands down.
