To be fair, most of people don’t need half of that paraphernalia ever, let alone everyday. I have never needed cabled internet on my laptop, be it at work or for leisure, and used external displays only on armed monitors or presentations, which had the dongles on them, rather than the other way around. I am investing now on many cables and Bluetooth peripherals just so I can use my laptop with the lid closed. At that point, it is just a portable desktop with low power consumption.

You actually just need 200Mbps, which isn't too hard. Most webservers (specially small companies) only have 100Mbps upload per connection (to also limit their DoS or even DDoS risk). Even if a lot of them do have 1Gbps uploads, only download-specific servers (like CDN's, and whatnot) have over 1Gbps (like Steam, when Linus downloads at 10Gbps).

The real reason an active DP to HDMI adapter is useful is because DP ports in HDMI mode only have a 0.3 volt swing, whereas real HDMI is 0.7 volts. If you need to drive a longish HDMI cable like for example if you have a projector that's on the ceiling then it won't work with a passive adapter.

Hey Linus, I recently did a project similar to what you did for your home computers. Two of the things holding me up were the optical TB3 cables (which Corning has now given to use normal people) and a lac of a good dock. While that CalDigit is a good one, it still seemed like two big of a compromise for a desktop. So what I did was get a Sonnet Echo Express SE IIIe and 2 of those Star Tech USB 3 5 Gbps 4 Controller cards (and a 10Gbps Asus card I had from a motherboard) and have that sitting at my desk. I'm still troubleshooting the issue that only one of the cards will show up at a time, but it gives 8 full speed USB 3 channels to fully take advantage of the TB3 interface (or as much as you can attempt for USB I guess). Would love to see you try something similar.

Don't know why these active adapters are called "dongles" - I learned a dongle is a part of hardware that works as a security-, software- or hardware-lock for expensive software. You can copy software without the dongle but the software wont work without the dongle plugged into the computer. I had to use that for autocad plugged into the parallel port and later exchanged that dongle for a USB based one. None of these by Linus presented products are classical dongles. Some dongles were even used to lock complete systems. Without the dongle you could start the system but got only a BIOS message that the dongle was missing.
