@@joooseph22 there becomes a point of diminishing returns. They could make it thinner by using one of those keyboard like the num pad on a gas station pump has, but that's obviously not worth it. They can keep all the IO, and still have thin computers. And the people who cares about having "a bEtTeR LoOkiNg LaPtOp" can buy an Apple, and an Apple dongle... which negates all of the progress making it thin, but puts another $150 in Apple's pocket.

To be fair, most of people don’t need half of that paraphernalia ever, let alone everyday. I have never needed cabled internet on my laptop, be it at work or for leisure, and used external displays only on armed monitors or presentations, which had the dongles on them, rather than the other way around. I am investing now on many cables and Bluetooth peripherals just so I can use my laptop with the lid closed. At that point, it is just a portable desktop with low power consumption.

@Chinoman10

You actually just need 200Mbps, which isn't too hard. Most webservers (specially small companies) only have 100Mbps upload per connection (to also limit their DoS or even DDoS risk). Even if a lot of them do have 1Gbps uploads, only download-specific servers (like CDN's, and whatnot) have over 1Gbps (like Steam, when Linus downloads at 10Gbps).

Caldigit also has a USB-C Pro dock that can do dual 4K 60 Hz on macs or PCs with 4 lane Thunderbolt 3. If its a 2 lane Thunderbolt 3 it will do dual 4K at 30 Hz.

Totally awesome device from CalDigit, works right out of the box and never had any issues so far. Selling my MBP at the moment and will hook it up to the new Mac mini which is coming next week :P. For my gaming PC I don't need a hub like this, I chose a motherboard with plenty of connectivity, specially selected one with 10 GB/s USB-C for my Oculus Quest2 to play FS2020 in VR :P (which is totally incredible, try it guys!)

Works like a champ I get single cable connectivity, I run Ethernet, Audio, and 2x Dell 24" 1920x1200 displays. I did notice that a couple of the 5gbs usb ports share lanes with the displays so I get mouse chatter unless I pick the right port for the mouse. Works so well for me I have outfitted several other people here with similar setups. Running Elementary OS if anyone cares, recently switched to the Gram from a 16" MBP because Catalina sucks so bad for power users.

Ts3Plus actually cost as much as Dell WD19DC with dual TB3 connection. This puppy has 2x130W power delivery (Dell's proprietary), so it will power my Precision 7750 without triggering throttling (serving less than 210W of power to 7750 causes it to throttle). But TS3 Plus's 5x USB-A is a treat! I'd really like that, as I actually need: 1x DP for external monitor 1xHDMI 4x USB (for 3D scanner) 2xUSB (Unifying and 3D connexion dongles) 1xUSB/USB-C for my portable drive aaaand I need to daisy chain USB hubs to do that :(

The real reason an active DP to HDMI adapter is useful is because DP ports in HDMI mode only have a 0.3 volt swing, whereas real HDMI is 0.7 volts. If you need to drive a longish HDMI cable like for example if you have a projector that's on the ceiling then it won't work with a passive adapter.

Slow charging notification even though you use original charger means that the protocol handshake has not been established. In other words it might even charge at half of the rate even if you don't have anything else plugged to the hub. Not good.

I have two TS-3 Plus docks. They work great. The only criticism I have is you cannot update the firmware for the dock using a windows PC.

I recently bought the USB-C Pro Dock from them, and it is excellent. I would highly recommend CalDigit.

You can have the TR3 dock and plug in the 10GbE adapter and get 10GbE. It just needs to go to the thunderbolt 3 10G power and data port. Pretty nice for M1 Mac owners. Then I would use the second thunderbolt port on the laptop to plug in a SSD or I guess you could use the 10G data only port on the TR3 but I would save the bandwidth for display port 4K60Hz out.

Hey Linus, I recently did a project similar to what you did for your home computers. Two of the things holding me up were the optical TB3 cables (which Corning has now given to use normal people) and a lac of a good dock. While that CalDigit is a good one, it still seemed like two big of a compromise for a desktop. So what I did was get a Sonnet Echo Express SE IIIe and 2 of those Star Tech USB 3 5 Gbps 4 Controller cards (and a 10Gbps Asus card I had from a motherboard) and have that sitting at my desk. I'm still troubleshooting the issue that only one of the cards will show up at a time, but it gives 8 full speed USB 3 channels to fully take advantage of the TB3 interface (or as much as you can attempt for USB I guess). Would love to see you try something similar.

I use every single port on my TS3, actually had to use an extra port from my laptop to power all of my stuff. Pretty sure one of my usb ports don't work because when I power my laptop on sometimes, it doesn't give power. Randomly after unplugging and plugging it back in a few times it might power back on. Wonder if its just a limitation of TB3

Don't know why these active adapters are called "dongles" - I learned a dongle is a part of hardware that works as a security-, software- or hardware-lock for expensive software. You can copy software without the dongle but the software wont work without the dongle plugged into the computer. I had to use that for autocad plugged into the parallel port and later exchanged that dongle for a USB based one. None of these by Linus presented products are classical dongles. Some dongles were even used to lock complete systems. Without the dongle you could start the system but got only a BIOS message that the dongle was missing.
