I'm sure he misspoke the first time. If should have been South Africa. And it is really easy to get South Africa on America's side. I don't see a point of a lot of those alliances. Even assuming Peter is right, and a lot of SE Asia countries have a bright future ahead of them - why be allies with them? What can they give the US that the US lacks? Apart from being a counterweight to China in the region, but Peter's logic is that China will soon cease to be a threat.

Turkiye whilst a NATO member sees itself as the “third way”. A polar counterweight to USA and China. Turkiye will fast track its Turkic Union and then start adding non-Turkic allies into the union like Pakistan, Libya, Somalia and Syria…plus nearby countries like Albania, Kosovo and Macedonia.

This is Mr. Zeihan rambling about random country details that he thinks are more significant than democracy and wealth (which to me are more important parameters of success). The most likely scenario for the end of globalization would not mean an end to all trade, but rather that we will be trading mostly within blocks of nations. The US should really aim to get as many nations on their side as possible as leaving just a few nations out in the cold could spell out a disaster. Imagine North Korea with long range mirv nukes. This is a likely scenario today. Then imagine how much worse that scenario could get if they were backed by countries with strong economies and more advanced technologies.
