No one can fault ya'll for removing "junk" trees to replace them with pretty trees and fruit trees! Consider putting the chicken coop in the old garden area, close to the house to gather eggs and give them garden scraps. It can become a great-looking area with a more permanent pretty coop to complement your new landscape. Since it is in the phase 2 area it will give you time to plan it and buy a coop or build a pretty trimmed-out and painted to pop or blend in coop! I can't wait to watch your gardens go in!

The old metal fencing can also be made into tomato cages or a trellis. That's what my elderly neighbor does. He made some for me from a roll of old fencing he had in his junk pile. He's an old farmer so he saves everything just in case.

I just thought of an idea. That smaller (I think to the left when you exit your kitchen door) area where you have already established strawberry plants, you could doll it up, leave some strawberries there, add some raspberry plants so the kids can go in and pick some themselves. Excellent way to teach how to care for, respect, and learn about when they’re ready to pick. Even some more hardy herbs like basil, cilantro and oregano would be excellent. I just know when my kids were little they absolutely loved picking berries and herbs and bringing them into me in their own baskets (and it kept them from wandering in my larger garden). They would check the bushes and talk to each other and their conversations with each other about wondering if they were ready to pick, what color they should be, how long it took to produce more bounty, etc. were priceless lol. Just a thought ❤

Maybe plant some black/re currant and blueberries for starters. I too loved picking berries as a child and I loved the raspberry bush in our garden, because it produces the most fruit, but my hands were always scratched from the thorns(or get varieties without thorns maybe)😅

I love my chipper, even though it's small. It's a bit labour intensive but makes use of what would be waste! There's a sawmill in my nearest town, so getting woodchip would not be an issue, but it's so good to have the waste cleared and used as mulch. I use it right away usually

It would be great to replant at least one of the Laurus nobilis (bay laurel) trees that were cut down once the plans are set more firmly. Fresh clean grown bay leaves from one's own tree and like other spices fresh bay is so much better than dried. They make great gifts and decorations, you never have to buy them again and you can use them to trade with other gardeners.

Have you considered having an herb greenstalk near your kitchen entrance door so you can grab fresh herbs. They are super easy to fill fully with various herbs (even multiple varieties of one herb)

Becky, "Laurel Tree"?? As in Bay Laurel?? Save some of those leaves, if that's what they are... Oh goodness Bay leaves are so very good in all sorts of recipes, canning spice, and even to keep bugs out of your pantry.

You should think about making a row of fruit trees at that lower fence line. In 15 years who knows what will be in your neighbor's fields (condos? YIKES... maybe) and those trees will block whatever happens in the future while still keeping your view. You could fill them out with a permiculture style guild of berry bushes and longer term perennials that will only get better with time.

I don't understand why you didn't have the landscapers save some of the tree logs for you to have for your fireplace. That would have helped with your woodpile supply cost. So you can have heat when the power goes out.

Don't forget a road or pathway from the garden to your basement. You will need it for your fall harvest of potatoes, cabbage, squash, etc. Just backup your sidecar and unload. Can't wait to see the progress.

I cannot imagine having not lived there one year BEFORE big changes 😮😮😮 experience all the seasons, lighting, water, ground absorption, to see what truly living there each season… there was likely a reason for certain trees/landscaping (privacy/lighting/shade/etc.

In the South, we call that MESSY tree a Sweet Gum Tree, and we have a few on our property, and I amen exactly what you say about them. They are useless and very hard on your lawnmowers with those crazy, little balls everywhere in the yard. I’m excited about your garden and landscape projects. I live a couple hours south from Becky. The sweet gum trees are terrible. The city here in Eugene decided🤪 to plant them in the side walk strips. So now we have heaving side walks all over town. My sister just had 2 removed from her front yard. They couldn’t even mow around them because the roots were so high. They really are messy too. I have a friend who was a home health nurse and he accidentally got one under his foot and rolled, then fell flat on his back on the sidewalk. He now walks with a cane. So glad that they are tearing them out.

I agree with everything you have said about Sweet Gum trees. I have a big one in an undeveloped area of my property. One good thing I will say about mine is that it is stunning in the fall with leaves that vary from bright yellow to deep purple. I’m glad mine is where it doesn’t creat a problem.

I’m from the south too. When I was a kid, we’d get the gum balls and spray paint them at Christmas time for ornaments. They’re very cute covered in glitter. But I wouldn’t want one next to my house. Our woods and country lanes are covered with them.

Sweet gums are not totally useless. They are good host plants for Luna Moths. Also, our goats ♡love ♡the leaves! The leaves turn color in the fall, even in Florida where not a lot of trees give good fall color.

I liked those trees surrounding your house. I’m sure they would have blocked your house from extreme winds, rain, sun and would have regulated the temperature and would have protected the house. They looked purposefully planted there.

I'm a tree lover too but sometimes they have to come down, especially if they are established before you move in. Sadly one fall I did not cut down 2 trees, they grew enormous by the summer and shaded my garden for most of the day. This is your new home so whatever will work best for your needs is what you Have to do for the long run xx

We bought 15 1/2 acres here in the middle of Iowa because of all of the trees. The previous owners absolutely did not take care of the property! They did not mow the lawn for 2 years! We lived in the house for 4 years then built a new one. We enjoyed the wooded area immensely! Unfortunately, we had the Emerald Ash Bore came through and wiped us out! 100’s of trees gone. We are planting more trees indigenous to our area but the deer eat them so it takes more money and time than we have. In two years we are having our 20 th wedding anniversary renewal here on our property. I need to start this summer getting more of the dead trees out and just cleaned up more. Then I need to hire a landscaper also! So, long story short, I hear you!

Can't wait to see the whole transformation. I am really surprised you didn't have them chip all the trees and bushes you had taken down. It would have been great for starting a compost or a chicken run for your girls to scratch into the new wood chips. Line the garden beds with wood chip as well. We took down 16 huge trees and kept all the chips from it and in 2 years it has pretty much completely turned to beautiful dirt.

It’s a shame you didn’t tell them to mulch all the trees they removed. It’s a waste of a a free, useful resource for either mulch or you can leave in a pile to compost. Would have been the ideal base filler for the bottom half of the new veggie beds you’re making, and a nice ode to the trees being taken, giving back to the land they came from.

Becky we just had three big trees removed and one tree trimmed way back. It was so stressful and it sure changed the yard and garden. Plus we now have a view we never knew was there. The sunlight is amazing.

Becky, you may already have plans to do this, but if possible, you may want to go ahead and raise the height of your beds now, since as you grow older bending and kneeling to weed is such a hassle. Also, landscape fabric and wire (to prevent voles and moles from digging your beds or directly into your soil and eating your food) would be so helpful for you.

No worries about taking out trees on your own property. These tree were not suiting your needs, but they can still be useful as a recycled product! You are going to put more trees in so the benefit to the earth and you will still be fulfilled. I know you basically said this. All this to validate you and to show you support for your decisions!!

We bought our property for the view also. Nice rolling hills like yours. Didn’t take long before the trees in the distance grew and blocked the view. Enjoy it while you can. It is absolutely beautiful. everybody hating on sweet gum trees. I love mine. It makes beautiful colors in the fall. I just pick the balls up and toss them in the yard along the driveway and sidewalk using them as a mulch.

I’m really excited for you Becky, also that baby A is going to grow up learning, knowing and growing his own food and having a healthy relationship with all types of food because of that, something not many children get the privilege of doing. I don’t think there’s anything better than watching a small person getting their hands in the earth, getting mucky to them have a healthy dinner a nice warm bath and into a nice warm bed where you know they’ll sleep well. I am certifying in Permaculture Design so I can either do consulting or design work for them to DIY or both for people all over for their homes or yards to create sustainable closed loop systems for their property or even a veggie garden with some rain catchment or an orchard. I did feel very sad when I saw all the trees being cut down. I understand why you did it though and I am sure the new trees you plant will be wonderful. I almost cried when you started to get emotional about the sun and being outside. I can't wait to see how the garden progresses. Also, those chickens are so darn cute!!! I saw the eggs on instagram! I have issues with critters digging up my garlic over winter, so after planting, I put a sheet of chicken wire over them and that’s fixed the issue. I use wires to hold it in place. Also makes it easy to cut the scapes as they come up. Too bad all the laurels had to go, the foliage makes great wreaths, swags, etc.

Great yard! Fun for your son and pups to play in! We removed 8 trees, some were to close to the house or power lines and others were just super messy too. Then we replanted other trees farther away and correctly sized for growth.

🇦🇺Just remember your child will probably love the outdoors like you. Fencing when they are young gives you peace of mind. My son Benjamin crawled at 3 months, he was always on the floor with our cats and dogs. They would tease him and he learned early to crawl to them. At 3 1/2 months he climbed a chain mesh fence. After that he climbed everything, at 11 months he could open our front door. We had to install and use deadbolts on our home. My 3 girls all crawled before 4 1/2 months and all my kids walked at 9 months, but Benjamin was the only one interested in being outside all hours of the day and night. Welcome to parenthood. You may think that’s way off but think again. You blink and it’s happening.
