Your way of thinking about yourself really resonates with me. I am 62 and have had similar thoughts about what is 'appropriate' for someone my age to wear. I'm not going to start wearing a mini skirt but I also want to wear clothes and styles I like...not what others think I should wear. It has taken me a long time to finally feel comfortable with 'me' and I am pleased to hear you have finally come to this point as well.

I love this! The process is definitely what is important. Even if you find something you’ve made isn’t quite you,you’ve still gained something by making it. The experience may have taught you something you can use later in another project. ❤️

Great vlog. We’re of a similar age and mindset. I’m still trying to find my style, although my husband says it’s that of a toddler. I’m running round in my flowery Doc Martens today and I don’t give a damn what anyone thinks because I love them. I think we have to take our identities back at this age and be our true selves. Menopause is such a weird stage in our lives and any bit of confidence and self belief we have we need to embrace. Well done on the weight loss too, I need to get a few pounds off again and it’s been a constant battle between wanting to be thinner and wanting all the chocolate. Looking for award to seeing you’re Indigo dress. x

Sal_sews yes that’s so true .... I wonder if age does have a great influence on things ... like we’re not so hung up on all the trivia anymore ... I know all the things I used to worry about seem nonsense now .... I mean dusting and arranging ornaments 😬 what’s that all about 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Love this ! I'm a little bit older than you but so much of what you say resonates. I've spent far to much of my life worrying about what other people think and one of the great liberators of being in my 50s is what I feel is the great cloak of invisibility of the over 50s woman. Literally no one cares or notices what you say, what you wear or what you do. So you can wear, say or do whatever you like ! It's wonderful. Does it take the maturity that comes with being in your 50s to realise this ? Or is it just because society has moved on to focus on the next generation ? I don't know but I'll take it...
@TheDressmakersCloset5 жыл бұрын
Hi Mary, you are probably right and to be honest I think a lot of it comes from having spent so many years worrying about what you say, think or even wear that by the time we reach 50 we have become much more relaxed about life. I know I have and it's very liberating! Mwuah x

Style is what u like. What u feel good in. I just found your videos this morning, love them. I still wear my boho, hippie style from 60’s-70’s. San Francisco area. That’s where I went to high school. I don’t worry what others ay. It’s who I am! Good for u in being “me” attitude

Great video. Getting older is wonderful as we begin to care less about what other people think. I love your style and love the Instagram sewing community. Being part of this community has changed my life. The support and encouragement is fantastic. Your wise words are great, you are so relatable. Thank you so much. Xx

I think our style changes with our life changes and in terms of our sewing journey, as our skill level increases. I worked in finance and have had to be suited and booted until April this year when I retired. I am now struggling to find my post retirement style, which I know will change as I settle down to my new and enjoyable reality. I absolutely agree with you that when I started sewing it was just a scattergun approach in seeing a pattern on Instagram, buying and making it because everyone else has! I am now, like you becoming more considered in my approach! I think it is now my time and I will make and wear what I want, whatever that may be❤️❤️❤️❤️

Just reading the comments so far it seems you have resonated with a lot of women “our age” - I think finding personal style is a constantly evolving process. I’ve been dressmaking since I was a child and I’m 49 now and I still find I make the odd garment which doesn’t get much wear! Body confidence is key and it’s something I’m still working on. I’d love to make more sewing friends too 💜

Love this! I’m at a similar stage myself. I started dressmaking in Feb this year and was swayed by fabric that wasn’t really my ‘usual’ RTW style. Dressmaking has really made me question what it is I’m making and I too am starting to slow down and look at patterns then fabric! I do think dressmaking made me think about my weight, my look - it’s a journey! Thank you for the video 😊🙏🏻 x

I love this. I'm heading towards 61 and when do we get to wear what we want. Congratulations on your weight loss, I know how hard it is. Funny how we see ourselves, I think that Bloomsbury blouse is your style as it does fit into that granny,Victorian oldie fashioned style and that fabric is gorgeous. I class my style as lazy🤣 I'm happiest sewing in my PJs I spend a lot of time in leggings and sweatshirts walking the dog and going to dog meet ups ( he has a better social life than me) and I am a jeans person but I will take inspiration from you and dress them up with a lovely top. Have a great week xx

Lovely to come across your video today, I feel like your describing me. I picked up sewing two years ago purely because I couldn’t get a decent fit in clothing. I’m still struggling I’m a size 20 but have decided to lose weight as I love sewing so much I want to look the best I can in my own me made clothes. I know what you mean when choosing fabric but think your idea is the way to go chose a pattern then fabric. Look forward to your next video 😊

i can relate to this but in your me mades I see a definite vi tage style vibe...maybe the problem is that we can't see that what we like has a strong theme, because its just what we like! As a bigger size I have really had to make do in RTW, now can enjoy the freedom to discover my style with sewing. Tha ks for a thought provoking video

Lovely vlog!!! Lots of parallels here for us “ladies of a certain age”! I really enjoy dressmaking, making styles I like, in fabrics I like, and it’s a lot more affordable too!!! I tend to go in shops now not thinking, “It’s lovely, but no way I could afford that!” but “ Love that, I’m sure I should make one similar in exactly the colours I like!!” Also that feeling, when someone admires a garment you’ve made is fantastic!! Have a lovely stitchy day!, 😀

Great video Jayne! You're right, age doesn't matter if you feel comfortable and confident in something. I'm wearing pinafores at 40 and I don't care if people think that only a child should wear them....I love them and I'm rocking them lol. I have a varied style...so it's definitely whatever you wear is you. Well done on your weight loss...it's always tough to lose weight. I'm currently following slimming world as I've put on quite a bit since having my children so trying to get back to feeling more me...plus it'll help with my running as it's hard work running when you're heavier than you used to be. People will say I don't need to lose but it's how you feel and see yourself. I know I'll be happier when I get to goal. I'll fit back into all my clothes and if some are too big afterwards at least I know I can alter them or re-make!! Xx

Hello, I really enjoyed this video, I've watched it with my morning cuppa. I started making a few things for myself a year or so ago and have done the same with putting wrong fabrics and patterns together. You have inspired me to think about what I want to make and also about body confidence, I am in my fifties too, I want to lose weight for myself and I would like to have a wardrobe full of me made and charity shop bargains! Thanks for this, I am a fellow north east girl from County Durham. Happy sewing xxx

Oh my gosh. I’ve loved that Betty blouse since I saw you wearing it in your video. I don’t know how you can part with it. I will gladly wear either and be excited to wear any of your beautiful creations. I’ll cover any shipping cost. In case I don’t get selected, what is the pattern company for the Betty blouse? I know what your saying about discovering who you are as you sew. After so many years of taking care of everyone except myself, I had to rediscover my own style. I tend to like Victorian styles the most. Modern Victorian is my favourite.
