Adam, I need a favor. About a week ago I brought home a pretty Box Turtle and she is pretty nice. Well I made a mistake and told my 15yr old son that shes more like a tortoise than a turtle. I love reptiles and I have owned some of the most venomous snakes in the Americas. I have had an alligator for 22yrs. But never in my life would I ever feel as dumb as I did in the argument with my son. The only reason I found for it being called a turtle and not a tortoise, it on how they walk. I don't think I am the only person that is truly baffled about this and I probably should not even care. Lol. But if you could do a video on this topic, I would be gratefully appreciated. You definitely know more about turtles, tortoises and lizards than I do. I might be able to give you a run for your money on snakes though. Lol. Maybe maybe not. Lol. Anyway, if you don't want to touch this subject, I will understand, I have found out that it can really stir the pot really well. Lol. Hope you and your family are doing well. Down here in South Louisiana, its freaking HOT!!!! We got a little system thats headed or way, so hopefully it can cool things down for awhile and blow all of these mosquitoes away. Thanks again man.

Hey adam, not saying your a bad keeper or anything, just sharing my experience. Tortoises are not exactly of a very low iq animal as they are actually quite smart. They can diffrentiate between food and hand or diffrence between their owners and other ppl. The table factor is also a bit wrong as most tortoises ( cant speak for all) will back off on some injurious altitude (lack of words😅). The main thing for them to develop such good intelligence is enrichment, by encrichment I mean them interacting in a perfectly natural enclosure, also letting them look for their own food. I understand your in Canada as its mostly cold. I was just trying to tell that tortoises aint dumb. People many times think that tortoises are dumb because tortoises are animals of habbit. If you observe in the wild tortoises, they follow a certain routine during the day and during seasonal changes. I am just sharing my experience. I am not trying to tell you that your a bad keeper. I just want to clarify that tortoises are not as dumb as we think. This can't be explained easily on a comment but still try to understand.

@@shamik_sathe Now I am no turtle or tortoise expert by any means. But I think when it comes to turtles walking off the top of a table or cliff in some cases. I dont think its because they are dumb or stupid. I dont think they can see as good as other reptiles. They might have a depth perception. So when that first foot dosen't touch anything, by then its to late and turtle falls down to the ground. That damn gravity is a bi**h isnt it. Lol. But what do I know? I dont know why a box turtle is not a tortoise...... The reason I can find, its how they walk on their feet.

My dragon is smart I guess because I take her outside in Arizona, and she's a big tough scary dragon when a hawk flies overhead (though she jumps on me when it happens lol) but when an airplane flies by, she hides under her log. She's right. As her guardian I could fistfight a hawk, but would probably lose a fight with an airplane.

And then, when he said, "I think these are ridiculously smart", I said aloud, "Please be Schneider's skinks...". And then I yelled aloud when it was! I think I have a unique viewpoint, bc I work with reptiles (also amphibians and birds) in a zoo/rehabilitation setting, so here are my best offs: smartest: • green iguanas (iguana iguana) • monitor lizards (genus varanus), especially white-throated monitors (varanus albigularis albigularis) and komodo monitors (varanus komodoensis) they have distinct characters, have a daily schedule, recognise different carers and even have favourites, can differentiate between genders (our green iguana lady only likes other women) and know how to get certain things. our komodo monitors know to bring their bowls like dogs when feedings happen and some green iguanas will scratch the carer door when they want to be misted. they know when their feeding times are and will complain if they aren't on time and they will even recognise us carers if we aren't wearing work clothes. it's wild. smart: • reticulated python (malayopython reticulatus) talking about one specific one, Rosie, she knows when we want to clean/refill her water bowl and will just move to the side so we can comfortably do it without bothering her. she also definitely has good and bad days and favourite carers. dumbest: • cuvier's dwarf caiman (Paleosuchus palpebrosus) there is not a single thought going on behind those cute eyes. none. they are such passive animals and idk how they manage to do anything in life. we once had a pump malfunction in their pool and instead of swimming away, they all just let themselves be pushed into one side of the enclosure and rotaed around, just to get pushed into it again. maybe it was fun for them? they will also lose to the turtles in feedings, if we wouldn't separate them. biggest span between dumb and smart in a species: • aldabra giant tortoise (alabrachelys gigantea) you can really tell they have their own personalities and characters and some are smarter than others. some will barge through anything and try to get over or through a fence while others know to wait for the carer to open the fence and one of our ladies figured out how to open it (!!) and let all of them out one night. a kid once threw it's yellow ball into the enclosure (pls don't do that, animals could choke) and one of our tortoises tried eating it for about three hours. also, if you don't put the food bowl where it usually stands? help, I am gonna starve. and some are known for stealing apples and crisps out of strollers? a male also always tries to mate with another male, for years, don't know if he's gay or just really doesn't understand what's going on.

Humans are dumb. Beyond words ^.^ our brains are the most evolve yet we csnnot solve pur own problems let alone the problems of our specises. We seperate fron our own specises based off pity, insignificant irrational indifference such as physical apoearence, sexuality, religion or just silly debates where some people end up killing over on mere arguments. Oh yeah, the world tells you to wear a mask but you get upset and end up killing the person who is trying to save your life. Also people astrosize each other for being a damn " individual" as i have experienced vs. Being a " norm" a steryotype. My experience when moving to the damn south in Ga by my own race. And then the rascisim. We certainly make it pur ugly nature to be aegrated in so msny ways for a primitsl beast who has a head and oblong brain like a watermellon. Yet you see people injecting themselves with bleach, and shotying a six year old baby in the arm for playing in their own neighborhood. Simplicity is trully harmonious and more so then are complex selves. The way i see it the smarter you are as human animals, the more likely you are to become psychotic, suicidal, unpredictable and a devil. Dude we are going extinct andvwill certsinly NOT OUTLAST THE DINOSAURS WHO ARE 65millions years of existiving vs. Our specises who are far light years away and even solving the problem of global warming let alone a lot of people vlearly DC dont give a shit what with all the drag racing and so on and so forth. I'd like to see a 'pros and cons' of each animal; e.i housing, feeding, interactability, personality, etc. As an example, my Rosy Boa is super easy to keep in a 40 gallon terrarium where my ball python needs a significantly bigger (and more expensive) enclosure. Being in So Cal it also takes more effort to provide enough humidity for the BP where the RB is from around these parts. The ball python is great for just hanging out in one place where the Rosy is super busy and inquisitive, it just takes him forever to go from point A to point B and he is so cute while doing so. They both like to play on their playground but because of their respective size and weight there are a lot more things for the Rosy to play with. Both are EXCELLENT for handling even with timid people. Both get a little excited and bitey on feeding day but that's because they are excellent feeders. But one hopper mouse for the RB is less money than one small/medium rat for the BP. You get the point.

He loves pepperoni from pizza, knows his name and comes to you when you call him, introduces his girlfriend (my grandma's red-footed tortoise) to anyone that comes to the house and is with you (makes a clicking noise and when she comes, next to him, he rubs his head against her shell), chooses the food he wants and rejects kale. Also, he loves to give you kisses (touches your fingers with his beak/nose) if he likes you. His girlfriend Lola is not dumb either, but she is younger and gets nervous with suspicious-looking strangers (only strangers) and pees close to the strangers to let them know she doesn't like them. My ball python girl seems unnervingly intelligent as for her age and species. She seems constantly on allert (yet her instincts always win when she's scared by a sudden move or unexpected situation, but istn't it the case with all of us?) and loves exploring every time she notices a difference in the surroundings. She may seem "dumb" at times, but as in case with all of us, she first needs to check if she just can do certain things- if she cannot, she simply backs off and goes around doing ball pythin stuff again. She started slithering off my bed only when she realised that she's long enough to not fall and hurt herself, but omg in her youths her exploration skills led her to hit the glass walls or floor of her terrarium several times XD My father was once scared that she'll be stuck in the locker when she was still little and in exploring mode, and immediatelly after he poked her to go down, she jumped at him, hitting a glass wall in the process rather hard. It later took her MONTHS to stop percieving my father as pottential threat, but I think she forgave him earlier and then started trusting him, when he prooved himself gentle with her. But she always loved and recognised my smell, mostly because I was a mother figure to her kind of... Not so long ago I wanted to help her access the warmer hide that was between two tree roots in her terratium and being a clumsy b1tch I am, I accidentally caused one of them (of course it had to be the heavier one 😕🤦♀️) to fall on her which visibly scared her, as it was the 2nd time in her entire life here that she actually balled up for quite a while, but then everything went to normal. I think she knows me for a time long enough to know that it was an accident and even now when I look into her eyes, I can see she holds no grudge towards me. Beautiful reptile.

I would have liked your opinion about Jeweled Lacerta's intelligence since you have one of them. They sometimes are considered "miniature tegus," so I wonder if they are actually very smart.

Wow, more on the Schneider’s skinks! Am considering emerald tree skinks too, mostly because of how much they seem to actually want interaction with people!

Same here. She actually waits till I'm not looking when she's out to try and have an adventure. And she only jumped from my shoulder once. Never again. Now she climbs down my body instead. She also likes to crawl onto my back where I have a more difficult time reaching her before she tries to climb down. I'm considering a small animal playpen for her. She also can escape her tank if I don't keep the screen lid on by climbing the plants in a corner where the lid is to the side. She also looks over edges rather than lemming (I know that was made up) over the edge, but I still don't want to risk it. She even lets me know when she's hungry, or at least recognizes me as food provider. Currently working on clicker training, but seeing as shes ovulating, there aren't many chances to use the clicker. I don't have THAT much hope that it will work. She's smart for a leo, but she's still a leo. XD

I've had a blue tongue skink, beardie, iguana, leopard geckos and currently have box turtles. I completely agree with leopard geckos! Cute as hell, dumb as rocks. But all my other lizards were pretty interactive. My iguana lived for 21 years and was almost like a pet dog, sort of. Loved him!
