I also went to Ringling, but didn't make it. I put this video off because I hit rock bottom at Ringling and I knew this video would be triggering, using the prior knowledge that you'd been to Ringling, too. I'm doing a lot better now, so I decided to face this demon with you. I just want to say I really appreciated this video. Seeing your old Ringling art was actually reassuring to my 2016-2017 self that's still kinda trapped inside and going to therapy for it. It actually didn't look very far off to what my old Ringling art looks like and after all this time, feeling like a serious failure, I just want to say thank you for putting this video together.

Some aditonal advice, it's great to practice drawing the things that you can't draw yet, but every now and then draw something that you can draw realy well to remind yourself that you are a good artist and that there are just things you haven't learned yet.

Really, when one needs a little reminder of how far they've come redrawing an old art is the way to go... surely it is an old art, something that one has definitely done in the past so it likely won't be as complicated. And then just compare the results and ta daah, you just realized how far you've come.

in art classes, people mainly tend to focus on realism before choosing a style so they’re to understand and able to express human anatomy before stylizing their artwork

I know it's a joke. But let me just flex my knowledge a bit 😅😅 To make a KZbin 2D animation video, you need to draw several thousand frames. Who make your characters even a bit realistic would take a ton of extra work on top of figuring out their anatomys each time. I guess if it's 3D it's a bit more plausible. You are going to have a nightmare working on it though. That's why most animators in KZbin choose very basic and simplified avatars for their characters. And I love to see how each creator figures out and way to add their personal touch which makes them unique. Like how Jame's and Rebeca's character designs can look close but you can instantly differentiate between the two .

Kesshami when people say that their art is bad, they usually don't mean that their art is BAD bad. It means that it's much worse than what their goal in art (or really anything) is.

Kesshami As an artist, I can confirm that this is the feeling you get when you look at old art. It isn't generally bad, especially not for people who aren't good at art, but it's bad in comparison to the art you do right now. As for the tree - I do realistic portraits and I draw trees like a five year old. So don't beat yourself up over it, just keep trying.

I'm not bad at art, at least I don't consider myself bad just in a learning process, certainly not at Rebecca's level though. I am terrible at digitally drawing anything. I just meant that where she sees bad art, I see merely incomplete art that could be completed into characters doing that gesture and look amazing, much better than my own. I do get that looking back on old art and cringing, but my old art is, well, cringy, but 'Becca's old art looks amazing to me. Maybe that speaks for my current level. still using artist mannequins or other references over here. ^-^; As old art that was a building block for her, those pieces are amazing...of course I have my childhood blob drawings to compare to...my building blocks were...super simple or very badly drawn...I still can't draw a perfect(almost) circle without intense concentration. Tree? Tree, tree, who talked about a tree? XD I'm terrible at trees too though...in fact I'm terrible at all backgrounds. It's the one thing I've not really been able to..improve on...even a little. Backgrounds. I even have improved on my hands, but not backgrounds. Toes still mess me up though.

Kesshami Don't even start with circles XD it's impossible for me to draw a perfect circle, that shit is hard. But yeah, it also depends on your age. If you're way you ger than she is, I'd say to myself that I still got time to catch up. If not, it's probably that you didn't draw as much as she did. But I think telling her that her old art is good is like someone trying to tell you that your old drawings are good. The appropriate answer to this is in most cases: 'excuse me, what? Do you have eyes???'

Yes I know people say things like Leonardo Da Vinci could draw a perfect circle but actually he couldn’t, so yeah sure it looked perfect from you preview but if you used a microscope on it then all the chalk of the pencil wouldn’t be perfect it would be a bunch squiggles and just an absolute mess
