I have a lot of tornadoes near me and I always think of my hamster first. My fate is always going to be the same as my hamsters in these situations!

Awesome! We currently live in California so out here our biggest worry would be some sort of fire. It’s pretty unlikely to happen in our specific area since we don’t live in the hills or anything, but I still ALWAYS have everything prepared for if we ever have to evacuate. Always best to be prepared!

I recently had to evacuate my home due to hurricane Irma. I keep, what I call, a "bug out bag" stocked with all the essentials. I also have some small bin cages like your big one. Because the pet friendly shelters in our area do not allow pets other than cats & dogs, we left the west coast of FL & drove to the mts of NC! Being prepared prior to the evacuation (with bins & essentials) was key to leaving in a hurry! Thanks for providing this resource for all of us👍

That’s so smart of you to keep a bug out bag. I don’t understand why shelters would allow cats and dogs but no other animals. The shelters could require travel cages to keep them safely contained. It tears my heart to think of the animal people are forced to leave behind. It’s so important for families to have a plan in place for all of their pets. I’m so glad you were able to evacuate in time. I was so worried for everyone. Irma was massive.

Thanks! There is a big fire here in Redding California and I need to be prepared to evacuate my hamsters. Sadly I don’t have a small cage to put them in, so I need to resort to using shoe boxes. I modified them so they are ventilated and have the basic necessities of a travel cage. Food, bedding, a hideout, and I piece of fruit to add to keep the critters hydrated.

I'm so sorry you need to prepare for evacuation. The shoe boxes can work in this situation. Maybe tape or tie up the lids to secure them if you can. Focus on getting somewhere safe and then you can worry about accommodations later. I pray that the fires won't reach your area and you won't need to go but if so do what ever you need to do to get out of there and get somewhere safe.

I have a cat, fish and, hamster and I have been trying to come up with a plan In case of a fire or something it’s hard because i have things I want to save that mean a lot to me.
@HammyTime5 жыл бұрын
I think about that too. What would I be able to save if I had minutes to do it. Having plans help but I still worry sometimes. I store my evacuation cages and supplies including a large tote bag next to my pet's enclosures. I don't know how to evacuate fish :(

So here's another idea of emergency especially in hurricane areas I live in an area that is part of as somebody explains me one time hurricane Alley you can sometimes find small buckets that are airtight sealable keeping them around just in case there is a chance of flooding I wouldn't use them unless you absolutely had them but it has been something I have had concerns about in the past and I actually got the idea from someone who was like an emergency prepper and had to do this for his cat I believe but yes small airtight sealable buckets this is very very temporary it's just get you to safety in the event of some type of flooding which you know can happen very quickly and very easily during hurricanes. Also enough rope/ paracord if you have multiple hamsters and you have to attach them together and to attach them to your person and whatnot
@HammyTime2 жыл бұрын
I can see how the buckets could work in flooding situations. I never thought of that. If I lived in a flood zone I would do that if I had to. Great idea!
