For me it would have to be; GK: Pickford RWB: Trippier RCB: Walker CB: Stones LCB: Maguire LWB: Rose CM: Dier CM: Alli CAM: Sterling ST:Kane ST: Vardy I know this wouldn't actually happen but I think it would be the best for england with the players we have. Pickford is more composed than Butland and just generally looks the least likely to make a mistake. Tripper and Alexander-Arnold is a tough one but I'd go with Tripper purely because of the chemistry between him and Kane (he had so many good chances created crossing in the ball for Kane for Spurs). Walker works well as a CB in this formation because of his pace, Stones is a good ball player and Maguire is built like a brick shithouse and is also always a danger from set pieces (seriously for Leicester he gets a fair amount of goals and assists from corners.). Cahill is experienced yes but also not in great form and the further away Jones is from this backline the better. Rose is easily the best option at LWB because you know he's actually a LB by trade. Young I'm not convinced by because he doesn't have the defensive cover to back up his mistakes and Delph is okay at LB but it's not his best position. Henderson is such an overrated boring footballer and I wouldn't want him in the team I'd rather have Dier to help out with the defence to allow Walker to push forward. That for me leaves Alli to roam forward more to create chances for the front 3. Sterling can use his pace and agility to get into good positions and while his finishing does leave something to be desired his presence in the team gives opposition something to worry about. For me however the best thing we could do is have both Kane and Vardy up front as our main attacking outlet. They have such fundamentally different playing styles it would be hard for opponents to defend against as trying to defend against one works in the others favour. Sadly I think we'll only see Vardy when we're losing and need a goal but hey ho I can hope. I would be happy having Rashford up front instead of Vardy because he always seems to do well for us and looked dangerous in the friendlies. Lingard and Welbeck would make great impact substitutions I think with Lingard doing so well for Man United this season late on and Welbeck having such a good scoring record for england. Loftus Cheek could help to offer something different as well although I see his game time being limited in this WC but a good one for the future.

Southgate will stick with the 3 at the back I hear. Walker will probably be used as the right sided CB. Maguire deserves to start but Cahill's experience will come in handy. Pickford will most likely be our main GK as his distribution is key in this new system. Dele Alli and Lingard with Henderson or Dier in the midfield will bring a decent balance. Rashford was fantastic against Costa Rica but I feel Sterling might start up top with Kane.

Based of this video it's clear you don't watch England. "Stones isn't good in the middle". What? He is perfect in the middle and can push into midfield. He can spray passes to either wing. *Proceeds to put Jones over maguire and put him in the middle*. Watch man Utd vs Chelsea and see how shit Jones is in the middle of a middle 3. "Walker is better going forward than backwards". Yes, but he doesn't overlap as much as you think he does. His crossing is overrated and he would be better in a back 3 with his passing ability to suit our possession style. We can put tripper who attacks a lot more. I found it weird how you put a guy who destroyed a btec South American team once over a guy who has done it over the whole season

Against the weaker sides we should only play henderson or dier as a defensive midfielder. The rest should be more attacking minded because Tunisia and Panama will park the bus and we need as much creativity as possible. Though I would consider playing both dier and henderson against the likes of Belgium.

Biggest confusion to me is the inclusion on Alexander and Welbeck. Not a huge fan of Welbeck and England have enough fowards that play his positions (Sterling, Rashford, Vardy, Kane). Southgate has made it very clear that he will be playing a 5/3 at the back. So for me it's very difficult to play both Rashford and Sterling, as I think Rashford is much better central. I think Southgate will start Sterling, and keep Rashford on the bench.

I'd play a 3-4-1-2 with Butland in goal. Stones, Cahill and Maguire as centre backs. Rose and walker as wing backs. Henderson and Dier as centre mids. Alli at CAM. Then Kane and Rashford upfront. Then as subs off the bench i'd have lingard come on for Alli, Sterling come on for Rashford and maybe vardy on for kane. If we need to go in behind the other teams defence a bit more

finn Thomas. *Sigh.* Why are people so gosh-darn obsessed with stats? Sterling is massively ordinary. His season can literally be summed up as "carried by KDB, Sane and D.Silva." He literally can't do anything. He's can't cross, he can't shoot, he can't pass 1st time and he can't even go past players. This shouldn't be an debate. Rashford is already an infinitely better footballer. Forget about misleading stats and just look at their ability and you'll see Rashford outshines him in every department.

Matt I love your these types of videos to hear your thoughts because you make a lot of sense but I disagree completely with your first choice lineup. You’ve gone for 5 at the back with 3 midfielders in Henderson and Delphi who are both defensive when we are much better at attacking than defending. Lingard and sterling have to get in every lineup there crucial players so I wouldn’t go 5 at the back but if I had to I would drop delph for lingard and have sterling and Kane up front
