Hello from Celina Texas!👍💚 I have a hanging basket of the fishbone cactus; it is very healthy but hasn't bloomed. I've had it 2 years. I've made many healthy small plants from it. It is inside facing the south.
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon Жыл бұрын
Hi Ellen :-D thats wonderful you have one of these Fishbone cactus plants too, they are wonderful with their zig zag shaped leaves, it sounds like it is in a perfect position facing south, I had this one for about 8 years before it bloomed for me, I love to use a tomato fertiliser used at half strength once a month from April to September for fertilising these cacti, its safe and great to use for all flowering plants like Cacti, the tomato feed is high in Potash and really encourages the chances of more blooms, I use it at half the strength they recommend using for tomato's, ideally if you have a cool but still bright position to overwinter your cactus from November to March this will also help to encourage blooming, I have two of these plants and the one I keep indoors hasn't flowered yet but the one in this video that I overwinter in my cool polytunnel ( temperature around 45F in winter ) flowers every year, the cool winter rest period helps to encourage the changes of blooming in Summer, good luck with your Fishbone cactus and I bet you will see blooms in the near future too, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Celina Texas for a super Sunday today XXXX

This is an attractive cactus that commands considerable sums these days at an adult size. Mine is small and not flowering size but I appreciate having it, as I like to place it on a north facing window and it does well, as with all the rest of the epiphyllum's in light shade/low sun. All of my cacti are finished for the year now flowering wise and a few are still growing, (not for much longer). There is a week of mild weather now through to next week of high teens and days of partial sun and cloud. After that, I expect that will be it for this year. I am now only watering very lightly a handful of sub tropicals. Can't wait for spring to arrive already!!
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 2 жыл бұрын
Thats wonderful you have this Cactus too James :-D and these cacti do so well in north facing positions, and much prefer the lower light levels, the weather today in Belfast is so warm for this time of year and it was 19c today and 24c in the polytunnel, warmer than it was in August haha, it was so lovely and felt like a Summers day even though it was overcast, most of the cacti have finished flowering too and the Echinopsis that had buds have aborted their buds now, and all starting to go into their Winter rest period, the Schlumbergeras are starting to bud up, and my white flowering one is coming into buds now, I have stopped watering all the desert cacti now, but still watering the Tropicals like the Epiphytic cacti and the Pereskia varieties, and Yes haha, Roll on Spring already haha, I absolutely dread the thought of the winter, I just want to hibernate and overwinter with the cacti myself LOL! :-D thanks so much James for your wonderful comments and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Somerset for a fantastic Thursday evening and Friday ahead XXXX

It is true that they don’t self pollinate. You would need another specimen. But any of your orchid cactus hybrids of disocactus lineage, You can pollinate this plant with, and it will make a viable seed and a beautiful hybrid. It will have the lobed stems of the anguliger With a flower that on sone seedlings will be white and others has characteristics of the pollinator.

@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon Жыл бұрын
Hi Sandy :-D so sorry to hear about your Cactus losing its bud, sometimes a slight change in weather and temperature can cause the buds to drop off before they have a chance to open, if the cactus is kept too dry the buds can drop off too, this Cactus produced a lot more buds but only half on them stayed on and flowered, it was very hot in our yard this Summer and fall and I think the heat caused the extra buds to drop off, I also notice that these cacti can be prone to aphids that seem to be like magnets for the developing flower buds, these tiny Aphids are almost invisible to spot as they are green coloured and hide in between the base of the buds, I had my Epiphyllum German empress drop all of its buds this year due to very tiny Aphids at the base of the buds, the good news is because your cactus produced a flower bud it is mature enough to flower again, and I bet next year you will have lots of blooms, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday XXXX

Thats fantastic you have two of these wonderful cacti, I notice that mine also often gets soft at the tips and mushy, I prune the soft tops off, the roots that grow from the tips are aerial roots and you can either leave them on the plant or cut them off, they produce the aerial roots to climb onto nearby vegetation in their natural habitats, I will need to repot mine as they are desperate for a repot haha, I usually repot them every 3-4 years into a well draining soil with a mix of about 50% houseplant soil with 25% perlite and 25% horticultural sand, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday XXXX

Hi there, I love to give these Cacti a cool and mostly dry winter rest at about 50F/10c, and then I use a tomato feed at half the strength from April to September with every 4th watering I give them, the high potash in the tomato feed works well for producing flowers on cacti including Epiphyllums, the love to be outdoors in spring and summer if they can be protected from strong sunshine, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Tuesday XXXX

Hi Clare :-D is it the cactus on the wall next to the Fishbone Cactus ? if it is its a Cleistocactus winterii, they root really well from cuttings if they are planted in a gritty well draining cactus soil, if its the cactus on the right in the hanging basket with the thin trailing stems its a Rhipsalis baccifera, I often root cuttings of the Rhipsalis baccifera in water and once they have rooted i plant them up, thanks so much Clare for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Friday XXXX

These are so beautiful!! I have four cuttings of this that I bought from Etsy. I didn’t know that they flowered! I’d love to hear your opinion on what I should do for next summer. I tried putting some of my plants outside this year, but we got so many torrential thunderstorms that I was constantly bringing the plants back inside so they wouldn’t get root rot. If I put more of my cacti, epiphyllum and euphorbia outside next year, would you recommend bringing them in during heavy rainstorms? I’m afraid they’ll get root rot if I just left them out all summer… Thank you in advance and thank you for sharing! 💜💚🪴🌵

Hi Sharon :-D thats fantastic that you have four cuttings of this Zig Zag Cactus, they are amazing plants to grow, yes the rain in Summer can be a pain for our cacti and succulents outdoors, I have this problem too in Ireland during the Summer with our high rainfall, I usually leave the epiphytes outside but bring in the desert cacti and succulents back in the polytunnel temporarily during high rainfall, what you could do is put up a canopy over the plants to keep the rain off, or keep them in an outside plastic cover greenhouse to protect from rain, its definitely best to bring them indoors during heavy rain in the Summer, thanks so much Sharon for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Tuesday today XXXX
