Great video! I acquired one of these at a plant swap that was labeled "rick rack." It's not looking all that great but see some roots trying to grow. I wanted to cut out a bit to use for propagating but was scared to cut! I've learned some useful things from you! Thanks!

I got a cutting of this plant from a swap a few months back and couldn't figure out what it was. Google lens ai did not help and it was driving me nuts. Now I finally know what this plant is and how to take care of it. Thanks so much. Edit: I think the scientific name of the plant is called Weberocereus imitans. I see ppl on here call it zig zag cactus or ric rac cactus. All this time I thought I had something like a monstera cause my cutting was big and wide.

Hi Rosario, the dormancy period is very important for the fishbone cacti. When dormant it requires very little water. Then as the temperature rises it is important to give move it to a location where it get enough sunlight. Try changing its' location and lets see if it will flower.

The Fishbone cacti is a slow grower and after propagation it could take 2 years to put out its first blooms. Patience is required. Once it matures it will surprise you with its amazing flower.

@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener 2 жыл бұрын
As mentioned most Epiphyllum plants don't bloom for the first two years. Also check that the position of plant. They like morning light and indirect afternoon light. Also balance the watering not too much water as they are cacti but don't allow the plant to dry out. To fertilize plant reduce the ratio 2:10.10 ( as you mentioned reducing the nitrogen level)in spring temperature. This helps promote root and flowering. I hope this was helpful

Hi Alice! Thank you for this video? The side shoots from my fish bone cactus sometimes break off as they are a bit delicate. Would I be able to propagate from the little shoots (5 cm long) so I don't have to throw them away?

Hi Denise, I believe it will work. Do a soil propagation as it is easier and as the side shoots are small. Good Luck and keep me posted.

Thank you for the knowledge. How do you know when it’s time to repot your plant. I saved a plant from the local store that was on its last leg. But I feel it needs to be repotted it has grown 10 fold. Does it give you any indication it wants a bigger pot?
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener 7 ай бұрын
Hi, well done for saving your fish bone Cactus. I always find that the fishbone cacti actually likes to be potbound.I would repot the plant if the plant had outgrown its current pot. The best time to repot would be in the warmer months, late spring and in summer, when it is in its growth season.

Mine just struggles! Almost died now. May I purchase your rooted cuttings?
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jennifer, unfortunately export of plants from Kenya is not an easy process. Try again to propagate your cutting. With the fishbone cacti the process is slow. You may have over watered the medium and so the cutting starts to rot or underwater so it drys out.

I would like to know the potting medium.
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Josette, I normally make my own potting mixture. I mix organic i.e. bark, compost , perlite and grit about 1/3 to 2/3 potting soil. The whole idea is to get a loose organic mixture that drains well. It is just my combination and so far its ok

We just got one from a friend who didn’t want it. It wasn’t well cared for. It’s dark green with a light brown scaling all over it. We don’t know if it’s normal or a fungus. Any help?
@redsoilgardener
@redsoilgardener Жыл бұрын
Hi Michael thanks for sharing. I suspect it could be fungal leaf spot. Is it slightly raised? if it is then, try to wipe it down the leaves with a Neem oil mix . We just done an episode on Neem oil as a pest control last week and I have also indicated how to make your mix. Leaf spot usually occurs if water is left sitting on the leaf. Let me know if it works.

Bone meal and eggshell are beneficial for plants as Bone meal contains phosphorus and egg shell calcium. I normally just use the NPK for my plants and vary the ratio according to the plants needs

Vet interesting tutorial. You said it is a flowering plant, yet I see no flowers throughout this video. Also, it would be wise NOT to wear any GREEN clothing (as a background) when making videos on "GREEN" forestry foliage plants, as this takes away from the essence of the view of the plant you are discussing. Giving thanks for your knowledge

Thank you for your comments. Must apologise for late response as I was out of country. Noted about the Green top, appreciate. At the time I created the episode, the Epiphyllums had not flowered. They normally start to flower late October in Kenya. Do check my episode "The Epiphyllum Plant and family/Fishbone Cactus &Orchid Cacti". In this episode my Epiphyllums are in full bloom.
