@@DaveMorrow Quick test at home with contrasty back yard scene of pond with dark green magnolias and bright sky with blue and clouds - the "overexposed" image by 1 stop over nominal did result in a better edited exposure, with better quality in the shadow areas of the dark trees - the magnolia leaves are definitely crisper and without noise. Great instructional video on ETTR. Another thing to keep in mind, when viewing a histogram. First visualize the histogram divided into quarters; the far right quarter contain 50% of light data, next quarter contains 25%, next-12.5%. This is why ETTR works.

I have gained a lot of knowledge about photography from your channel and website, like back button focus technique which I am still getting used to. I am just wondering why not so many people subscribe this fantastic channel, in contrast, channels full of sense of commerce and sponsorship seem always popular.
@DaveMorrow
@DaveMorrow 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I get what you're saying! 40,000 subscribers is plenty of people for me. 1000 is plenty! haha If there are too many subs you can't actually have a community of conversation because it's far too overwhelming. I'd rather have interaction with a small number of people than have no interaction with millions. GROWTH. One of the main reasons is that I don't use ads, so KZbin doesn't promote the videos as much. Also, I don't spend anytime doing a bunch of other boring tasks that many channels do to quickly grow. I'm interesting in my free time for landscape photography trips and creating videos. If I can do that year round, my life is good! Why try to grow when you're already happy :) Enjoy the vids!

Thank you for sharing your workflow. ETTR or "maximise" sensor saturation is a key asset in digital photography. It can be used for every type of photography. If you are only saving raw files I would suggest changing following setting in camera. Most camera are set to sRGB color space with is a fairly "narrow" colour space compared to Adobe RGB so put this setting into Adobe RGB, take a muted profile and reduce contrast and saturation by e.g. -2. These tweaks will be reflected into the camera histogram. Some experimentation is still needed but I get fairly close results with this setup.
@DaveMorrow

I've been telling people for years now, they should spend less time on the internet fighting about which camera has 1/10 of a stop better dynamic range, and spend more time out in the field doing THIS, actually getting to know their camera's histogram and how it translates from the back of the camera to post-production, so that they know exactly what they can get away with in the field, and nail their real-world exposures to within 1/3 or 1/2 a stop of "perfect" for any scene. So glad you made this video to help explain the process and the reason behind it!

Dave, love your dedication and willingness to share your experiences and of course knowledge-THANK YOU. Please clarify something for me.I also shoot Nikon (D7200), so maybe your full frame metering is different but I do not think so. When metering you indicate "I am going to single spot meter on this area here" and you then move your "cursor" from the middle of the tree 1/2 F11 ISO64, down and into a lighter area (same exposure value). When you hit back button AF it both meters for exposure and autofocuses. But it looks like you have it on center weighted and not spot focus. I mention this because if you notice your exposure value will not change when set to center weighted only spot metering will meter for exposure when moved around your frame. Also unfortunately, only the Pro series Nikon cameras allow the histogram in live view "before" taking your shot for this ETTR technique. The rest of us can only see this histogram when reviewing image after taken or if we are live viewing video. We can view the bar graph thru the viewfinder before the shot but no histogram.
@DaveMorrow
@DaveMorrow 5 жыл бұрын
Center weighted average is the way to go. You will just have to take a few shots to dial in the exposure without live view. Same exact process. Start at 0EV and go up or down from there after your first shot, depending on the exposure.

Wow, finally I get it! I've watched you say countless times to ETTR but you seemed to go a bit further with examples this time of pushing even further past just ETTR. I paused and went out into my back yard with my camera and did some testing using this extra "now new to me, doh!" knowledge and wow, such a big difference. Pixel peeping in Photoshop shows a huge difference in shadow noise with the little extra pushing. Thank you so much, this has exposed me (see what I did there?) to a lot more possibilities for my landscape photography. Thank you. I was going to ask again when you're coming to visit Australia but seeing the incredible wilderness areas I'm guessing you might be a bit like me, explore your own country from one end to the other before even bothering to see others. You would LOVE the old growth forests in Tasmania though guaranteed. Giant tree ferns and everything covered in bright green moss. I think you'd fall in love.

Brill, I managed to set the back button focus but, I was wondering is it possible to even get the live view histogram up a d5600 before I take the shot? I can only seem to see it in playback.

Thank you, Dave. I liked the new introduction! Also, I learned a lot about trying to get as much information in the photo, by bracketing the images. I thought that if you “clipped” either the black or whites, that the information would be lost, but you make up for them in the other over/under exposed images.

Be sure to test on your camera. I tried to push 1-2 stops and did lose highlight detail. Also, once you get the shot it can never hurt to take a bracketed shot.

Excellent explanation. How is the Nikon D610 got dynamic range IYO. It seems to blow/clip highlights to often in sky’s on matrix metering, I see the blinking on rear lcd when viewing my images on the camera, Many times I often have to set 1/3- 1/2 negative EV to get no blinking. However , is this a good way to judge if I am over exposing because like you say , it’s the Jpeg that’s being viewed and not the RAW file. Is that still the case if I’m shooting RAW only? Would love your feedback , opinion etc? Thanks 🙏

What memories you must have, what an experience and what dedication ~ I’ve just had a look at you web page images > all stunning and amazing. I think when people look at a photo they very often have no idea of 1. The years of dedicated practice / study 2. The physical effort and hardships that go into capturing such images 3. The miles of hard slog when carrying a back pack with ‘stuff’ needed for the journey. 4. The art of taking a photo…. Truly amazing…….. Decided to go to my work station, open up LRc and take a look ...... there isnt ADOBE Neutral or Flat - bu there is standard? what do you suggest... really good to watch / listen to - I will add (expose to the Right) in my photography since it really makes sense. thanks very much for taking the time to share

Hey Dave, Excellent video as always. A little more technical, which is what a lot of us intermediates crave. Thank you. I've noticed ETTR is very important for wildlife photography, as we have to live in the high ISO ranges to keep our shutter speed high. I've noticed when you expose to the right you do much better with noise, even at ISO 6400+. Noise really lives in the darker parts of the image, so as long as you don't blow out the highlights, you want to raise the RAW capture to combat that. I may be misunderstanding this, but I believe that is due to the amount of data your sensor collects when more of the histogram is on the right (a lot more). The more data you have, the cleaner the image. Martin Bailey discussed this in a podcast/blog post a couple years back and it changed the way I shoot. One question for you about Lightroom Profiles. Have you experimented with Camera specific profiles, instead of Adobe ones? One last thing, I wanted to thank you for your last video and it's message. I have put out my first video and I'm excited to do more when the weather gets better. Cheers, Daniel
@DaveMorrow
@DaveMorrow 5 жыл бұрын
Hey Daniel, Great job on putting out a video. It's hard to start! You want to maximize the signal (light collected) to noise, producing the highest quality image. This article discusses the topic, in depth: www.davemorrowphotography.com/iso-photography I have not tested the camera profiles, but will do tomorrow. Thanks for the tip! Keep cranking out those vids & creating stuff.

Hi Dave, Just discovered your channel. I subscribed to your newsletter. Great stuff your doing. Learned a lot allready by just watcing one vlog. I do have a question for you. The bit with the histogram, If your camera has no option of showing the histogram in live view, do you have another tip of how to get the whites to the edge? I have a D3, but it seems that in live view, I don't have the option to show the histogram., Cheers, Michiel
@DaveMorrow
@DaveMorrow 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Michiel, good to hear from you & glad you like the vids. You will have to go with the trial and error option. Inside my online school I have a set of videos & a step by step workflow that I teach to those that don't have live view histograms. If you're interested in that process, any level of the membership, here, will work. No pressure. Just passing the info along to you:) www.davemorrowphotography.com/upgrade-membership There is also a bunch of free tutorials and guides here, but they don't cover your exact question: www.davemorrowphotography.com/2013/01/tutorials-photography-post-processing.html Take care, Dave
