I thought that this was a neat episode. I get how there can be a big difference between learning the structure of a language and actually communicating it. I liked seeing Sakito ask the other co-workers around his office about things to try and learn from them, and I like the relationship he had with Miyuki.
@Maninawig7 ай бұрын
Wanna know something cool? It is said that nobody knows the Japanese language. This is because there's 50k officially recognized kaji characters, but only 2136 of them are for every day use. If I recall, an expert linguist knows 10-15k. So, there's always a chance that you'll have to look up a word when you're researching. That said, most outsiders who learn Japanese learn what is called a "comversational" level of the language, allowing them to live a fulfilling life immerged in Japan. It is similar to any other language, but with Japanese, I know more of the numbers
@idman27 ай бұрын
@@Maninawig That is cool, and yeah I can see it. Like every language has it's own form of slang or how they use words that aren't officially recognized in the language as a whole so people who didn't grow up in the language wouldn't know it or people who weren't in the generation that word was introduce wont know it.
@Maninawig7 ай бұрын
@@idman2 oh, I haven't even considered the slang and colloqialisms. That would increase the terms. However, the number is that high because of the technical terms used officially. For a comparison, most people use common colour names in English, but there are thousands of colour shades with their own distinct names, like tawny (a type of orange). Yet even those who use colour theory in their daily lives don't master each and every one, but stuck to the ones they use the most. But like you said, so many unofficial words also exist, which would increase that number tremendously... not to mention generational slang... could you imagine if we had to teach Shakespearian Slang to pass a 5th grade English class?
@idman27 ай бұрын
@@Maninawig Yeah most of the time people who know of a certain skill don't learn every single thing about it but a good chunk of it to do what they need to do with the skill. I never thought of language being the same way though which is kind of funny when I think about it. That reminded me of when I used to read Shakespeare in my english classes back in the day and how they had the original words on one side and on the other side had the verse written in modern speech so we can know what they are saying.
@Maninawig7 ай бұрын
@@idman2 Oh, you read Shakespear the easy way. Our teacher was passionate, so he would actually teach us how to translate. My favourite Shakespearian lyric became A Midsummer Night's Dream, Act 1, Scene 1, lines 190-202... Aka Helena's fair speech. Cause if you'd recite it today, it would sound so insulting.

I have heard from native English speakers who have taught English in Japan (such as Chris Broad, a.k.a., Abroad In Japan) that Japanese schools don't so much teach English to improve fluency in the language, but to pass the school tests. Sometimes, the best way to learn a new language in order to improve fluency is to immerse yourself in it by interacting with native speakers. And even then, the written language can be very different than the spoken language. For example, I know a few Japanese words in the spoken language, but couldn't tell you what their written characters are; especially since Japan has three written scripts: kanji, katakana, and hiragana. And then when you get into the different dialects (for example, the Tokyo dialect is different from the Kansai dialect, and both are different from the Okinawan dialect, etc.), it can get even more difficult with both the written and spoken languages. So, yeah, Sakito might not be good at school English, but when it comes to practical English, he's actually quite good. If anything, Kaketo is the stupid one for not recognizing that fact. But in a way, it was her dumping him so harshly that allowed him to shape up and become the man he is today. Had she stayed with him, he would have probably never become CEO of a successful company. So her dumping him was actually the greatest gift she could have given him, even though she did not mean it as such.
@andrej1818 ай бұрын
Yeah in my school they only taught to pass the tests, I learned more english from youtube and tv then from school. The school only fixed my grammar.
@audrellcrowe17 ай бұрын
This. From the perspective of someone who is learning the language themselves. I can say with constant studying everyday and exposure to the actual language has allowed to progress quite a bit. And there is a very big difference between knowing enough to pass exams and actually being proficient at the language.

19:51 "I should have continued dating Sakito" I believe that if the girl had continued to date the protagonist she could have ended up in a worse way. It's the trauma of being dumped that helped the protagonist to partially change himself and commit in the work. If they had stayed together, the protagonist would probably have had a "normal" job or he would have left the girl a few years later. It would have been enough for the girl not to make fun of the protagonist years after the event and her life would probably have been perfect. #2 In any case the girl deserved it. In fact, he didn't leave the protagonist, he betrayed him behind his back and then threw the truth in his face before leaving him. She was young at the time, but even after several years she remained the same. So perhaps she also did too well all things considered that she didn't end up in big debts and have to work hard every day to repay them.

I think the best thing I liked about this episode was the timeline. Most of these have the guy working for eight to ten years then dating for another eight to ten years before marriage. I don't think the writers understand just how bad this is for women. Any pregnancy after thirty runs a high risk of complications. At least in this one he made CEO by twenty eight. Miyuki would be thirty two, which is still pushing her, but at least she's not in her late thirties before trying to start a family like other stories. And, as always, Threadlift and Shades give us another top performance in the dubbing department. If you two ever screw up you're going to give us fans heart attacks!
