I worked at Tesco to gain my first experience in retail, here's how it went. My job as a festive colleague, was my second official job. I now have retail experience to add to my CV.

Someone’s told me I said you can buy fireworks at 12, you cannot buy most fireworks until you’re 18 in England, I meant Christmas Crackers.

it took me years to learn how to ignore negativity and still take feedback about my service, and even then there were times when the customer succeeded in throwing me off my mood. Hearing your experience and how well spoken you are, I think you are the right person for the job :)

I worked at Sainsbury’s during COVID. Then moved to the US in 2021 and have worked in Tech ever since. I look back at my time in retail and am glad I got to experience what working at a supermarket is like. These type of jobs are great as long as you have a bigger plan in mind. I would recommend those who have these types of jobs to only stay there for 2 years max otherwise it can be very exhausting for not much reward. You are essentially just another number in their books. If you find yourself not truly coping with retail jobs then you will need to find it within you to progress your career in a field that somewhat interests you and can pay a lot better. I know some people can be stuck working retail for most of their lives and they hate it and well if you don’t hate it then good on you! As long as you’re happy with work that’s all that really matters. I personally knew retail was just a small chapter in my life.

Thanks for telling us about how things went - New subscriber here from Scotland - A festive colleague is brought in to help as the store gets busier in the lead up to Christmas - I always a bit amused that when you give most young people say a pound made up of silver and coppers they look horified and really struggle at counting it - Im old and come from an age that when i worked in a pub the till didnt add things up for you so i had to mentally calculate in my head what the round was going to cost so that i was able to tell then as i sat the last drink down on the bar

Thanks for subscribing! I was going to work at a pub before I discovered working in a pub as an under 18 restricts what I can do in the setting.

As a relative newcomer to the UK, and a fan of Tesco, I really enjoyed this video, I always wonder what it'd be like to work there, everyone's always quite nice, though sometimes you do see some people who look exhausted. Anyways, thanks for sharing!

Oh fella hahaha. Welcome to retail lad! It has the good and bad days. When you get older (30+) Like myself you start to appreciate what we do have matey. Currently a customer assistant at a Lidls and very similar training etc. Just don't let people or managers take the complete Micky out of shifts or you as a person. We're all human after all! And hope you're finding PLUs okay! ;)

I’ve started a job at a garden centre recently, it’s like Tesco but a more complicated till system, and being responsible for three tasks at once 😂

Honestly, I’ve been working at Tesco for 2 years now and am VERY ready to quit, only problem is that I have no backup plan in place, would LOVE to work full-time but I know that would burn me out in a few weeks. It’s difficult it really is.

Understandable after two years, I was sixteen at the time and since then I’ve had more retail experience and it can definitely be a challenge.

Retail can be a living hell, mainly due to the customers, but it sounds like your experience wasn't too bad. Good on you for going out and getting a job, and you'll have picked up some experience that many people of your age won't have. I apologise if this comment sounds patronising, that wasn't the intention.

Working now in retail (not Tesco's but another UK supermarket) after working in hospitality is bliss. Don't get me wrong, you have good days and bad but overall it's more enjoyable and less stressful.

I suppose just try not to be *too* quiet, I did that in an interview and I reckon I only got the job because of their lack of applicants. They’ll ask you ‘tell us a bit about yourself, so just mentally prepare what you want to say.

You were turned down by centerparcs?? More fool, them. You appear to be a smart, eloquent young man. Who would be fool enough to not hire you? Oh, wait - it’s the ‘new world’. In my day I’d have hired you in a second.
