I just came back from visiting Mumbai. My advise for anybody planning to move back to India would be to avoid settling in Tier 1 cities like Mumbai or Delhi, and pick a Tier 2 city like Pune or Bhubaneswar. Life in T1 cities is miserable, with traffic congestion, pollution, and highly irritated people all around.

Hey Nupur, I have moved to USA, at the age of 65 years. I felt like a stray dog. Not only I felt out of place, everything felt strange and forbidden. I have always enjoyed working in India. Work and work places occupy so much of your life, that here work to rule and money felt so shallow. Only after living in the same place for two years now I feel bit comfortable here.
@ashkumar72243 жыл бұрын
Thanks for making this video. There are so few people talking about this subject. I always end up feeling like the only people who go back to India after having lived (or even becoming naturalized elsewhere, as is my case) are those who have strong links in India: family, friends, want to raise their kids there. As an NRI with only my parents in India; married to someone of foreign-origin, I always feel like these narratives are not for me. This further discourages me from even wanting to attempt thinking about moving to India temporarily just to enjoy certain cultural aspects of living there. Your's is the first video that takes a genuine look at living in India as someone who has become used to living abroad and now is coming back a changed person. I'm really interested in your book now and will definitely be getting it.

Like your video very much Nupur. I'm an Indian living in USA for 40 years with my wife who is from USA. We are retired and traveled to over 200 cities around the world in the last 5 years. Now we want to move to India for at least six months to see all the beautiful places in India and near by island countries. With a little research, we found Chandigarh is a city where we could rent an apartment and travel all the famous hill stations from there to start. We will sell our house in USA and be free. We can stay in India longer if we like, shorter, if we don't.

I’m probably one of the younger NRIs in this comment section. I’m in high school and probably going to study Chemical Engineering in college. Was born in India and moved to the US at 9. It has been almost seven years for me. India is alright for me because my parents and close family are pretty progressive people - women being equal to men, no casteism/racism or hating other religions. I was privileged enough to be born in a family that is close to upper middle class and lenient. I would love to go back and help build the nation once I have the skills and money since I still have patriotic feelings towards it that I just don’t have for the USA. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a wonderful country but pledging loyalty to it just makes me feel weird. I want to start a nonprofit science and engineering research institute that focuses on all kinds of problems that engineering can be the solution to. You know, helping to solve environmental problems, hunger, and hiring some unemployed engineers along the way. I don’t want India to be the only country, I want to focus on all undeveloped ones but I want to start with India. I don’t mind it at all but I just don’t think I can live in the country anymore. Biggest problem for me is honestly the people. My experience is that the place itself is great, but even educated people are ignorant, hateful, and lack any kind of empathy and civic sense. I’m always on the edge of going crazy whenever I’m there because somebody cuts in line, shoves me, touches me inappropriately, spits, litters, terrible driving etc etc. I hate it so much!! I know that the government is also responsible for this but I don't see this kind of behavior in any other third world country! How do I adjust? Does life get better eventually?
@adelferoz4168 Жыл бұрын
It does not matter Tier1, Tier2, cities they all have the same problems. Noisy, dirty, overpopulated and polluted. The only places I can think of are the smaller towns like Mt. Abu, Coonoor, Kodaikanal or any small town on the coastline. It would be the best place in the world if the population was just 300 million at best.

Apartments in Bangalore used to have owners association. Talking about 28 years ago. Might have changed now. Owner’s association sets certain rules and regulations. If you are the owner, you know about this beforehand because you are part of it. If you are a tenant, you should read the rules and regulations before signing the rental agreement. It does not make sane for the leasing office to handle the arguments behind the campus rules and regulations.

The US isca GREAT PLACE to live in from the age of 25 to 65. After that the cost of living is not equivalent to your earnings. Property Taxes, Insurance, medical costs etc will drain you. Many Americans find it difficult to balance budgets after retirement. Many sell their big properties to move to smaller residences. Since the dollar still rules the world you can come to India stay for some days. Do not move for emotional grounds. Though you may have grown up in India, and India is the fastest growing economy in the world, it is has not reached MATURITY iin legal, political and police matters. The legacy of the colonial mindset amongst the ruling elite is FULLY in existence and freedom of business, services, etc are still I their infancy. Since it is NOTa DICTATORSHIP like China do not COMPARE it with China and move here.

@Vidya Haha I am a man who grew up in India and I can tell you even I am scared of driving in India. I have driven cars in US, as I worked there for few years of my 20s. It was stressful at first because for first time I had to follow rules and the lane discipline. I got stressed whenever police even showed up in rear view mirror thinking I broke some rule. But once I learnt these rules, Driving in USA was actually easier but can be tedious and tiresome due to all the things you have to remember I India on the other hand when I came back, I found it difficult to adjust. I used to drive in India on Local roads as well as National highways without any self doubt and driving car the way I liked, where I liked just staying focused on roads. But driving in US made me so self conscious that I was actually scared to drive in India. I limited my car driving to within the Colony I lived in where roads were mostly empty and stopped driving completely on National highways. I just realized how carelessly and dangerously I drove in India only because of US. My Indian friends still drive confidently as they never drove in US. Driving within the city for you would be easy but would be difficult on highways.
@yeswekey Жыл бұрын
Haha. If you've never driven in India, I'd say 2-3 years that includes few fender-benders to get perfect controls + defensive driving adapted to Indian conditions. Personaly I've drove 80k+ kms before moving to Finland. ~75k in Finland, ~30k during visits to India. Usually it takes 1 month to get acclimatized to the driving culture. 6 months to sink deeper into the brain.

If you could not be of financial interest to someone, or you could not help anyone immigrate, you were useless. It is of scant consequence trying to convince people in India that experiences overseas are not everything that is expected. India remains hopelessly crowded, filthy and full of people trying to take you for a ride. It is not possible to move back here. Be warned.

Tier 2 cities overall can offer better life than in US. US is only good if you enjoy working until death and have superficial friendships.

Shyamchabra5355 your thinking frozen when you left India and u living in stone age and still seeing India of 1965. Based on the information you have provided about leaving India in 1965 (assuming that you left on Jan 1. 1965, which is unlikely), It is almost 58 years since you left India. 58 years is a long time. Even if say that the world changes once every year then the world must have changed 58 times. But this so-called wannabe “Harry” failed to change himself and his image of the country where he was born. The truth is that many insecure “Toms” like u have been born in this country who went in search of greener pastures so that they could become “Harry”. Sadly, they may have acquired a lot, but their skin color refused to change.

Hello Nupur, i am NZ resident and soon will get my NZ citizenship. And having a strong feeling to come back to India. As per your experience do you recon i should get NZ citizenship and get the OCI card afterwards and if so which challenges i will be going to face in India (in terms of running my business if start or living or job), Or do i stick to my India's citizenship.
