If you add a thin layer of sphagnum on top of LECA, it won't dry out on the top layer as quickly. Or, adding 30-50% perlite to LECA will do the same thing and assist with quicker capillary action.

💯 on the Perlite part. I always mix the Perlite and LECA and a wick! Perlite just breaks down fast if you mix too hard

My pon was growing mold on the top also I’m thinking because I water it from the top. Now I’m watering inside the pot hoping the top will dry out, after spraying the top rocks with alcohol/water to kill the mold stuff.

Yup, filling up the container works to not get the substrate consistently wet! I use diluted Hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle! And it works really to keep the white fuzz from coming back too quickly

I’m so glad you made this video because coincidentally I use the same products when making my DIY pon. I have to say, I don’t think I like it. I find that it holds way too much moisture, to the point where most of my plants end up with so much Edema that they end up dropping leaves. To me, lechuza pon has superior quality of pumice and their mixture is so light weight. The pumice is just so different. Even when I supplement even more pumice, just seems to hold too much moisture, even hold back on water till the reservoir dries out. BUT the thing I don’t like about lechuza pon is, no matter how much air flow I give, white fuzzy mold grows on top of the substrate. There are definitely pros and cons. Been thinking about moving my Philodendron Jose Buono to aroid mix because it’s growing but just hates the DIY pon, gets such bad edema and drops leaves after putting out a new one. I also found that my anthurium vittarifolium and anthurium clarinervium don’t like it. I have had the best success with my anthurium pachyneurium in my DIY pon. I never had an anthurium grow so quick with so much roots! And it doesn’t get any edema at all.

Yes! Thank you so much for commenting! I agree with the white fuzz and Lechuza! And also about the too much moisture in some (not edema, though)! I supplement with LECA! As I size it up! 1- Save some money because LECA is cheaper 2- it adds that extra aeration / space/ to prevent too much moisture But I don't really have a good way of conveying how much. I kinda eyeball it sometimes they get more or less if I don't have them clean. You nailed it right on the head with the pumice being the key difference. I just couldn't find a "German washed Pumice" like they describe there was some Icelandic one! I think if we can figure out where it comes from and a similar supplier it would match closer! And interesting! My Jose Buono is in 100% LECA and has the entire reservoir full of roots so basically hydroponic! It has a vertical fan that oscillates 24/7 around the room! Maybe extra airflow could help with the transition!

@ thank you, I think I will be trying my Jose buono in leca

Tried DIY pon but the zeolite was so expensive where I live. Also like others I rotted roots with too small size of pumice. Again you pay a premium for size controled pumice. Kinda gave up on the whole pon thing.

Pumice is the key. I also gave up buying each ingredient! I add some LECA to customize the mix better for each plant. But I just cannot see myself going back to Aroid Mix , I haven't seen a fungus gnat in over 6 months and I wanna keep it that way! 🤣

Thank you for the feedback! I had actually lowered my voice in some parts because I thought I was eating the microphone 🤣

Please don't wash that dust and water down your drain. You will clog the pipes and it can cost thousand in damages for your whole building. Nice video though 👍

Absolutely!! I don't dump it on the drain. I let it sit and settle, the clean top water I use for some balcony plants and the "mud" at the end I just wipe it with a paper towel and throw it in the trash 🙌🏼
