Do you have an option on adding the root crack and fertilizer? Do synthetic fertilizers kill the mycorrhiza?
@AroidVibesOnly
@AroidVibesOnly 13 күн бұрын
Hi! Yes when I add it I try to just damp the substrate so I don't just wash them down to the reservoir. But after like a week it should be okay to not just bottom water. As far as fertilizers 🙃 I think you ask 7 people and get 7 answers. But mine is that I use water soluble (hydro) nutrients and lower than a 20-20-20 and not salts or slow release fertilizer which do affect the soil around them. So, I'm not worried about it affecting whatever mycorrhiza might be there, and their #1 job is to help breakdown the roots that might rot during the transplant shock and as long as it transitions, their job is done!

Tried DIY pon but the zeolite was so expensive where I live. Also like others I rotted roots with too small size of pumice. Again you pay a premium for size controled pumice. Kinda gave up on the whole pon thing.
@AroidVibesOnly
@AroidVibesOnly 21 күн бұрын
Pumice is the key. I also gave up buying each ingredient! I add some LECA to customize the mix better for each plant. But I just cannot see myself going back to Aroid Mix , I haven't seen a fungus gnat in over 6 months and I wanna keep it that way! 🤣
@discingaround
@discingaround 22 күн бұрын
If you add a thin layer of sphagnum on top of LECA, it won't dry out on the top layer as quickly. Or, adding 30-50% perlite to LECA will do the same thing and assist with quicker capillary action.
@AroidVibesOnly
@AroidVibesOnly 21 күн бұрын
💯 on the Perlite part. I always mix the Perlite and LECA and a wick! Perlite just breaks down fast if you mix too hard

Absolutely!! I don't dump it on the drain. I let it sit and settle, the clean top water I use for some balcony plants and the "mud" at the end I just wipe it with a paper towel and throw it in the trash 🙌🏼

My pon was growing mold on the top also I’m thinking because I water it from the top. Now I’m watering inside the pot hoping the top will dry out, after spraying the top rocks with alcohol/water to kill the mold stuff.

Yup, filling up the container works to not get the substrate consistently wet! I use diluted Hydrogen peroxide in a spray bottle! And it works really to keep the white fuzz from coming back too quickly

I’m so glad you made this video because coincidentally I use the same products when making my DIY pon. I have to say, I don’t think I like it. I find that it holds way too much moisture, to the point where most of my plants end up with so much Edema that they end up dropping leaves. To me, lechuza pon has superior quality of pumice and their mixture is so light weight. The pumice is just so different. Even when I supplement even more pumice, just seems to hold too much moisture, even hold back on water till the reservoir dries out. BUT the thing I don’t like about lechuza pon is, no matter how much air flow I give, white fuzzy mold grows on top of the substrate. There are definitely pros and cons. Been thinking about moving my Philodendron Jose Buono to aroid mix because it’s growing but just hates the DIY pon, gets such bad edema and drops leaves after putting out a new one. I also found that my anthurium vittarifolium and anthurium clarinervium don’t like it. I have had the best success with my anthurium pachyneurium in my DIY pon. I never had an anthurium grow so quick with so much roots! And it doesn’t get any edema at all.
@AroidVibesOnly
@AroidVibesOnly 22 күн бұрын
Yes! Thank you so much for commenting! I agree with the white fuzz and Lechuza! And also about the too much moisture in some (not edema, though)! I supplement with LECA! As I size it up! 1- Save some money because LECA is cheaper 2- it adds that extra aeration / space/ to prevent too much moisture But I don't really have a good way of conveying how much. I kinda eyeball it sometimes they get more or less if I don't have them clean. You nailed it right on the head with the pumice being the key difference. I just couldn't find a "German washed Pumice" like they describe there was some Icelandic one! I think if we can figure out where it comes from and a similar supplier it would match closer! And interesting! My Jose Buono is in 100% LECA and has the entire reservoir full of roots so basically hydroponic! It has a vertical fan that oscillates 24/7 around the room! Maybe extra airflow could help with the transition!

Wanted to know if corms grown in your home environment do better than grown plants purchased from a greenhouse. I am hopeing because some of my alocasia which have flowered now look bad; and I want to replace them with their corms. Can you explain why semi hydro works better than chunky soil kept moist for alocasia? I also purchased a manjula thinking of those large leaves on a pole. Mine has also been a disappointment not rooting into the pole and growing very slowly. It is the only pothos variety I have as I much prefer the philo vining plants which seem more refinded to me. Anyway, totally agree with you regarding pothos. My Serpens is still a struggle. It has grown larger but the leaves yellow at the edges and fall off as new ones appear. Do want to say that your videos keep it real with the many struggles encountered with the plant hobby.
@AroidVibesOnly
@AroidVibesOnly Ай бұрын
I'd say, yes. Corms that sprout and grow in your conditions will create a more resilient plant. Even little plugs work! I think it's when you get the big ones from a nursery and into house conditions when it really suffers. I'm making a video about my Pon mix, but I think it's because many alocasia come from islands, mountains and many from really gritty soils. So I think it's in part that and that they get hydro-roots so they can just exist in the reservoir and self regulate! Agreed with Pothos overall, I love my golden Pothos but it grew itself until it started to mess the wall climbing , but this one inside, not so much! 😂 And thank you! I love plants and hope many more people join the hobby! But I think it's better to know some plants are just difficult for many of us! 🧡 Thank you for watching
