Incomplete eye closure following ptosis surgery is only seen in congenital ptosis. More severe the ptosis, more is the gap. It is not applicable to other types of ptosis.Lubricant eye drops are required for first few months. Later, your eye can get used to it, and does not require any medications.

Hello Gursimran, a small gap between the two eyes is unavoidable for ptosis that has been there since birth. Rather than looking at it as a problem, think of it as an indicator of the success of the surgery. A small gap between the lids while sleeping does not affect the eye function. In fact, many normal individuals sleep with a slight opening in both their eyes. It is up to you to decide if you wish to look normal during the day (when it is more important), or during the night (when you are asleep!).

I have ptosis in the left eye aswell. Hope to undergo ptosis surgery sometime in the future. Apparently I have mild ptosis in the right one too so I will probably get both checked at consultation. I think mine is congenital because my father also had ptosis surgery in his early 20s. His was a lot worse than mine and affected his vision however mine is just a cosmetic issue. My eyes are very big aesthetically so it is not extremely obvious but I can tell and doctors can tell there is a problem.

Hello, Thank you for writing to me about your 'Eyelid winking', medically termed as Marcus Gunn Jaw Winking (MGJW). Here is some useful information about it: MGJW is a neurological mis-wiring. The chewing muscles have an abnormal nerve connection with the eyelid muscle, such that they both tend to move together. Patients often find the eyelid moving while eating food. These patients often have a droopy eyelid on the same side. Since this is a mis-wiring by birth, exact correction is not possible. However, if the eyelid is also droopy, that can be corrected. In most cases, the eyelid winking will reduce, but will not completely go away. Most insurance companies will not cover birth defects.

Few ptosis surgeries (MMCR) can be performed from behind the eyelid, and hence leave no visible scar. Most ptosis surgeries require eyelid skin or brow skin incisions. Only an actual examination can determine which surgery is suited for a given patient.

Fasanella servat is an outdated procedure. The normal tarsus is removed (50%) in this surgery, which is not necessary. There are better options available. For any ptosis surgery, there will always be a 10% chance of over/under-correction that requires additional stitch adjustment

Hello, Thank you for contacting me regarding your child with ptosis. The early years of life (first 8-10 years) are critical for the development of vision. During this period, eyelid droop (ptosis) if severe can hamper vision development. Not every child of that age requires correction of ptosis. Surgery is required if the vision is affected by the eyelid. If vision is normal, surgery can be delayed until the child wants it cosmetically. I would request you to come to Hyderabad for a consultation and complete check-up, in order to decide the need for surgery. Alternatively, you can see a paediatric ophthalmologist in your city. Hello, Thank you for your concern about complications/problems with ptosis surgery. The term 'ptosis' is a broad diagnosis, and there are several sub-types within it. Ptosis by birth (congenital) differs from that acquired later in life. Similarly, the severity of ptosis is graded as mild, moderate, and severe based on available neurological function. This grading cannot be determined with photos, but requires actual consultation during which we measure certain parameters of your eyelid. The common complications of ptosis surgery are as follows: 1) Bruising and swelling: usually lasts for 1-2 weeks. 2) Over/under-correction or contour issues: This happens in 5% cases, because ptosis surgery is not an exact science. Correction is based on assumptions and experience. Moreover, each person heals differently, adding to some variability. The good news, however, is that it can be solved by additional stitch adjustments at 4-6 weeks. 3) Incomplete closure of the eye: This is applicable only to congenital ptosis (ptosis since birth), which is moderate/severe. Your case may be different, and it may not be applicable to you. Only an actual consultation would tell you if it would happen to you. In most cases, this gap is very small (1-2mm), and does not affect the functioning of the eye. Finally, it is a choice between enjoying eye symmetry during the day than bother about slight incomplete closure of the eye during sleep. 4) Recurrence of Ptosis: This is the most-misunderstood problem with ptosis surgery. Not all ptosis surgeries last a lifetime. If the ptosis was severe, you will need multiple surgeries over a lifetime. It does not mean your surgery failed. It just means that your surgery had a limited like (like a battery), and now needs revision. 5) Reduction in Vision or blindness: This is the most severe complication, and is as rare as a flight crash. It might occur in severe cases, where the eyeball does not tolerate the exposure and acquires infection due to drying. In all cases, careful monitoring of the eye after surgery will prevent this. Although this is a long list, all would not be applicable to you. Simply reading about complications on the internet or consulting an eye doctor who does not perform these surgeries routinely will attract mis-information. It is essential that you obtain correct information that is specific to you, from an eye plastic surgeon (oculoplastic surgeon).

Hello Pradnya, the severity of ptosis can vary from person to person. In cases where the levator muscle function is good to fair, results are long-lasting. But if muscle function is poor, the surgery may require revisions. You need ot meet your surgeon for a checkup and discussion.

The extent of surgery, type of anaesthesia etc decides the cost.
