My Experience with Sonic Omens

I wanted to see how decent Sonic Omens was and honestly it's the most inconsistent experience I've had with any fan game.
The stages are designed where they don't have clear objectives on where to go, objects blend in with the environment causing you to get hit, bosses have unpredictable attacks, questionable voice acting that's good in some areas and downright awful in other areas. There's a lot of potential in this game but it's honestly crippled by how terrible it is from a game design standpoint.
I wouldn't even judge it so harshly if there wasn't a budget attached to this. But there's a budget and this fangame is no where near the level in quality compared to even Sonic Adventure 1.

@@leonardoalvarenga7572 The final boss fight just doesn't make much sense. It's poorly designed. You need to do homing attacks on enemies and water orbs that spawn around you to fill up your boost gauge. But to dodge attacks, you need to boost, which depletes the gauge. On top of that, any attack that hits you depletes your gauge entirely, making you start over. Or the boss shoots a huge lazer which forces you to boost, which makes you use up all of your boost gauge. And he will also use his lazer when you don't even have boost, causing you to get hit because you don't generate enough speed without the boost. It can become an endless loop due to RNG attacks alone and you have to orient your camera so that it's facing the boss at all times so you know what he's doing. Otherwise you'll get hit by offscreen attacks. In many Sonic games, or hell in any action game, the camera is ALWAYS facing the boss in any bossfight. And if the camera doesn't face the boss, there's at least a lock on function that you can use OR the game is designed in a way where you can focus your attention directly at the boss. It's a terrible boss. At least with Maria, you're focusing on the enemies and projectiles instead of her. But even then all of the bosses in general all have bad designs choices including the majority of the stages.

@@leonardoalvarenga7572, I played Sonic GT before Omens, that game (unlike Omens) has open ended design, encourages skill, has a better camera, and BETTER BOSSES. Sonic Forces had better design, and the writing looks like Shakespeare in comparison to Omens.

@@leonardoalvarenga7572 I'll admit, I was wrong on the lock on function mostly because I'm used to the layout on most Sonic games and there wasn't any tutorial that talked about the lock on function within Sonic Omens. But everything else I've said is true. There are a lot of problems with the Exiled boss fight that I've explained, even when there's a lock on function. Like how you CANNOT outrun the lazer when you don't have boost. Even when I was able to outrun the entire beam, the ending frames of the lazer will hit Sonic for no reason. You'll need to have just enough boost to reach top speed so you can avoid the lazer. Even his regular 3 projectile attack is inconsistent to dodge UNLESS YOU HAVE BOOST TO REACH TOP SPEED. And even then, you can still get hit. That's stupid and you know it lmao. Meter management in this game doesn't require skill since it's heavily dependent what attack the boss will use. And even then you'll get hit by attacks because the hitboxes are just jank. Also it's not a case of "get good". I went back and actually beat the boss and was starting to S rank some of the stages in the game to understand everything better. However due to the shit optimization of this game, I literally had to stop otherwise it'll fry my fucking CPU. (I have an i7 7700k with a Nvidia 3070Ti). holy shit i can applaud the effort in presentation, concept and even gameplay but WHY are some of the levels designed with such backwards philosophy for a Sonic game. That part where you had to time your jumps to get across the huge chasm with sliding walls had me grating my teeth just from watching it. you can save that kind of obtuse level design for a bonus level or something, not the main game. its amazing seeing these developers this far up their own ass, thinking they're better than everyone, while falling in the same traps that the industry devs fall into; making the late-game levels awkward to navigate and against your games original design, so it's harder for the sake of being hard. Sonic 1 did this kind of stuff. it's so funny seeing the backlash as a result of their sociopathic ego.

The thing with them making stuff hard for the sake of being hard really is strange when a lot of the stuff that happens in game isn't really hard. It's just inconsistent more than half of the time lmao. Like to this day, the hardest platformer that I've played imo is Spark 3 on the hardest difficulty Because the levels are designed more on the character's ability to maneuver around the stage rather than putting random crap that doesn't mesh well with your moveset at all (Ex. The metarex that basically rush at you with electric attacks when you're Sonic). Or just adding hitboxes everywhere for the player to avoid without no rhyme or reason. Add in the numerous amounts of jank and you get a disaster of a level to run through lmao.

You quit at a good time. That final boss made go straight up mental on stream on how terrible it is. Two phases with no checkpoint but the cutscene between them is unskippable. I didn't catch any of the outside controversy until today but honestly I don't even care. Only staying to criticize the product and trying to not cross the line. About, 70% of the game I dislike. A shame... but there's at least Spark 3 tomorrow.

Yeah this game isn't that great at all. lmao. There's so much that I dislike about this fangame. From the story of what's going on, the animations during the cutscenes, and the terrible level design, I'm surprised this was the best they had to offer. By any chance, did you manage to play Sonic Omens yourself? I'm trying to figure out if the game causes high CPU load on various computers. Every time I try to play this game, my CPU heats up WAY beyond any other game that I'll usually play. It seems to have some really piss poor optimization. That's literally why I actually stopped playing it completely when I wanted to revisit the last stage to beat the last boss. My CPU fans were LOUD and I immediately had to stop playing it.

@@ChaserTech Hmm well my PC ain't nothing that great anymore but for me it ran fine for the most part (a few framerate dips and it really doesn't like being alt+tabbed). I use an overclocked i5-8600K and a 1060 6GB also overclocked. I suppose it's nice that the game can run at higher framerates instead of being locked to 60 but as a result it was under almost 100% utilization most of the time.

@@XXNemesisXXXX Yeah I was finding that my temps were getting up to 80°C+ while playing through some of the stages. I had to put the game on the lowest possible settings just for it to be bearable. And I have an i7 7700k with a 3070 Ti GPU.

I just did a full stream of a blind run two days ago. So upset at the final boss because it didn't tell me that I had to double click the button as supersonic to hurt the ball so I thought I was just tripping cuz the middle of the boss was getting hit but nothing was happening. In the stage right before you fight him that part where you got to run up the wall was pissing me off so much I got so upset

Maybe i didnt have such a rough time because i started after the last chapter dropped. But just some things: Some of the springs are bugged to where they don't want you the correct height, it just happens I could deal with that. That part where you had to hit the water balloon things while the walls was moving should not be a part where it has to be done so precise or you die. I don't think that was intended but geez that part sucked. And that final run up the wall, i was ready to shoot someone

See, I was going to play this, but after I heard that the model they used for Maria used assets of a REAL child in their underwear in their textures, I was like NOPE! And the rationale behind it? I did at one point, but the spikes didn't go away. Edit: Actually looking back at the footage, they went away but was summoned back right after I used Chaos Blast, which I didn't have enough energy to do a second one.

Honestly I just used Chaos Control to kill the bots which also fills the meter. I think the trick to that fight for me was just timing my Chaos Control to quickly destroy whatever she threw at me and refill with the tanks on the edges of the stage.

@@KogaHarine I used Chaos Control before but sometimes the spikes merge with enemy hitboxes which prevents me from attacking them without getting hit. This happened several times throughout the fight where I have to actually wait for the spikes to pass over the enemies I was trying to hit. Which made me waste Chaos Control. If I disabled it in the middle of that fight, I ended up getting hit. So my best option was just to use Chaos Blast. And I eventually managed to get through just because the third phase didn't spawn spikes with enemies. Instead it spawned lazers and circle energy beams, which I was able to dodge out of the way.

@@ChaserTech Yeah the spikes move inward and outward so you have to watch during CC for when they aren't moving through one of the drones. I found if you hang in the air for a second when you see a spike in the way, it will move out of the way shortly after and let you keep up the chain. There was definitely a point where I had to grab the extra refill tanks on the edge of the map cause that final phase she likes to reuse the same attacks multiple times until the 3 gold drones appear.

Nah we like the official Sonic games. Tbh I personally think that Sonic Unleashed, Generations, SA2, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 were my fave ones. It's just that when some of the fanbase boldly claim they can make better games than Sega, I can't help but laugh when stuff like this is made. There has been great games made by more humble creators like sonic robo blast 2 but this one definitely needs more work.
