Best of luck with the match! Actually, speaking of the match, I was thinking of doing a KZbin live session to answer match questions. Think you and other MS4s would find that useful?

Congrats on becoming an attending! I'd love to hear you teach us about stains and IHC and the like. Very interesting stuff, but since I'm not a pathologist, I only can learn so much from textbooks.

I'd love to learn more about GI path! What stains you order and what framework you use to figure out what's going on with the patient. Would be fun to see some clinical cases!

That’s a very nice salary for an academic center as big as Stanford, no? You can definitely make 350k+ in a private practice in a small town. Can you also please tell what are your average works hours per week? Also what is your expected bonus?
@Baking_MD
@Baking_MD Жыл бұрын
It is a pretty good salary for average academic pathologists, the issue is where you live. I pay 4k a month for a 2bd/2ba apartment in Palo Alto, where as that would be the same mortgage for a decent size house elsewhere in the country (ie. Cleveland Clinic). I would say I work on average 50-60 hours during the weeks I am on service. A bonus isn't guaranteed, it all depends on how well the department does as a whole, but it is usually a couple thousand dollars.

is doing a research a "must" when you are an attending in an academic hospital? What if you like teaching residents but you don't like research :/ ?
@Baking_MD
@Baking_MD Жыл бұрын
Haha, unfortunately not. Teaching residents fall under the education component. But, the degree of research is variable. If you have a passion for research, you can grant funding and get more time to research. If not, like me, I try to contribute to whatever research projects I can, but since I just started, I am not sure if that is enough "research" for reappointment.

Hi I'm an non-EU international medical graduate with an MBBS degree recently graduated, I'm interested in becoming a pathologist in the USA, I haven't done my step exams yet, however I got the chance to do a 2 year master's in medical biotechnology in Hungary should I take it? I do find it interesting im interested in learning more about research as it might help me with that, but would be helpful in pathology? , and by helpful I mean would it help my application stand out when I apply for pathology residency? if I took those 2 years to build labskills and other start research projects because my med school didn't offer me much in terms of extra curricula, so now that step 1 doesn't have a score, their more pressure to focus on other things so i feel naked to apply having not done any research or volunteering or electives to enhance my application so, is this a good idea? any guidance would be appreciated

Is it harder to get an academic job compared to private? I would prefer academic and don't mind the reduced pay at all.
@Baking_MD
@Baking_MD Жыл бұрын
It's not necessarily harder to get an academic job, it just the fact that there are far less academic jobs than private practice. That said, academic jobs do want people with fellowship(s) and some research background. As for private practice, fellowship(s) are preferred but not required.

Hii doc, how much does clinical pathologists make in academic setting and is it wise decision to just choose clinical pathology only residency ?
@tupacsnotdead
@tupacsnotdead Жыл бұрын
Clin path folks in academics make between 200-250k. I don blood bank and lots of folks do clin path only for that. Realsistically AP/CP makes less sense if you plan on academic CP-only.

@@tupacsnotdead if I choose just clinical pathology and do fellowship in blood bank and transfusion medicine/ hematopathology , am I gonna get a stable job ? ( m sorry doc to bother with this kind of question) just wanna know job security ( i scored > 85th percentile in both step1 and step2, I like clinical pathology but m afraid to go for it, as I'm an img and I'm not aware of scope of clinical pathologist ) thankyou doc for taking time to reply

It might seem personal, but if I can ask, what do you to manage your periods during residency? I don't want to have um "accidents" when I'm working lol
@Baking_MD
@Baking_MD Жыл бұрын
Haha, I totally no problem answering that! I was on BC pills all through medical school to manage my periods, but once I started residency, it got hard. I got an IUD in my PGY1 year, and because I was a resident, it was completely free!
