How to Troubleshoot External Hard Drive
Here are some tips on how to troubleshoot if your external hard drive crashed.
1st - Make sure that you test it on both Mac and Windows operating system. Two tools to use are disk utility (Mac) and disk management (Windows).
2nd - Listen to any consistent buzzing or clicking. Its possible that the drive died. Also try another cable. I had another drive where the cable stopped working.
3rd - Remove hard drive from enclosure and set it on a hard drive dock or connection to a pc. Its possible that the enclosure just died and you can still retrieve your data.
4th - Replace the hard drive with a larger drive with the same working enclosure. (if you external drive died like mine did)
5th - Never keep all of your data on one drive. Thankfully I didn't but I have experienced users that keep all of their data mixed between drives.
Overall be safe with your data, if possible put a password on it, and never say your data in one place. Many providers like Googles G drive, Apple's iCloud and Microsoft OneDrive provide good options to save your data. Some are free others you pay monthly.
There are ways to get recovery data from an external drive and some can be expensive. I usually don't recommend them but if its super important I would search online for some options.
Instead of throwing this away you can replace the hard drive instead of buying a new one for an estimate of $159. A small 2TB drive ranges for $54 on amazon. Don't throw it away if the enclosure still works.
