I know this video is over 2 years old now, but I have to mention this for anyone who came to this video to have instruction on cloning their main drive to a new drive. AOMEI no longer allows system clones in the freeware version or the pro trial of their software. You have to purchase the pro version license. Just an FYI.

So for me to be able to clone my hdd to an ssd and then get rid of the HDD entirely, will I need to also install an operating system to the new(never used) SSD or will the O's being copied also? I do not have a windows disc to do so. Is this the difference between disk clone and system clone in AOMEI?

EDIT 11/8/21: Apparently, the below advice no longer works on later versions that restrict GPT to GPT transfers. Oh well. EDIT 6/9/22: DON'T USE THIS SOFTWARE! THE FREE RIDE IS OVER. USE SOMETHING ELSE NOW. ORIGINAL POST: IF YOU GET THE PROMPT TO PAY ON THE FREE VERSION: Go into disk management and initialize your new disk first. Make sure to match it to the same disk type as your source disk (MBR or GPT). When you re-run AOMEI it will let you past the paywall. Apparently it's a premium feature to clone to a different disk type, but if they match it goes right through.

Its $40 USD for a year, no other options of than lifetime which is around $70 USD. I paid for it and its working fine, there are other ways by using a flash drive to move an OS over to another hard drive but it doesn't partition anything and you'll have to do it manually. If you are having trouble with the paywall, make sure to initialize your new drive in the same format as your old drive. My old HDD was GPT while my freshly installed SSD was MBR (you can see these details in AOMEI as well). Using "create and format hard disk partitions," I was able to initialize my new SSD as GPT to avoid the paywall. (Converting and cloning a GPT drive to an MBR drive was only in the pro version). There are still other locked functions like expanding partition sizes to fill up bigger drives than the original disk, but luckily I did not have to deal with that in my case and I was able to use AOMEI with no other problems.

If you trust Jay implicitly, then you're a bit of an idiot. He tinkers with hardware, but when it comes to software he doesn't know very much. Firstly, cloning a running Windows installation is not a straight-forward process because of in-use files. Secondly, you do NOT get an unused partition if you clone onto a larger HD. Unused space is NOT the same a partition or even close. So, by all means, trust Jay, but since this kind of stuff is my job, I know that's he's taking crap and way out of his depth.

I think it's important that you guys who do these videos try and get across to the uninitiated the benefits of spending a little extra cash to purchase an extra drive and have it there just in case. I've been cloning my drives for years (I go back to the early days of Ghost) and it's always a comfort to know that if my drive goes bad I can just pop the other (cloned) drive in and be back up and running in no time. It's an easy way of dealing with a nasty virus too. I usually re-clone the drive if I install new software or make any major changes to the setup. That way both drives have the same software and configurations.

@justincider8892 2 жыл бұрын
@@dorminnimrodNo. If you have a 1tb drive and clone it onto a 256gb drive it does not increase the size of the drive. What would happen in that scenario is the data would be cloned exactly as is. If you had the 1tb drive filled with 200gbs of data the cloning process would write all 200gbs of data to the 256 drive and you would have 56 left. However, if the 1tb drive had 500gbs of data on it the cloning software would scan the 256 drive and detect that the drive isn't large enough to hold all the data and the process would quit.

Two reasons why people might be running into a pay wall instead of being able to go through the steps in this video. 1. During installation you clicked on "Better Choice: Try AOMEI Backupper Pro For Free" instead of choosing "Skip" and installing the Standard Version. 2. If you did install the Standard free version, you clicked on "Clone System" instead of "Clone Disk." In this video Jay tells us to click on Clone Disk. I was able to go through the cloning process as shown exactly in this video twice already, once yesterday (12/9/2022) and once today, without running into a pay wall at all.

@@TotalDbag24 Well, if the the new drive is blank, your options are to either use it as storage, clone an existing drive into it, or do a fresh install. If you create an image you would need the space to save that image, and the new drive would already need to have Windows in it so you can run the restore utility using that image. It's definitely doable, it's just extra steps and more time.

Thank you for the Video sir! 1. Never ever, ever, ever... never, ever, ever... Never, "save" any data/information, etc., on the OS (usually C:) drive!!! 2. ALWAYS "SAVE" YOUR WORK ON ANY OTHER DRIVE THAN THE OS DRIVE!!! Because, you should always "Clone" your OS drive, and "backup" your data drive.This will make "Cloning", and OS recovery, faster and more efficient, with data separated and secure (WHEN the OS drive ages/crashes.) The data drive migrates more efficiently to another computer when it is not mixed with OS programs(Apps for you millennials), drivers, etc. This idea comes from my work with Servers and it seems to be an effective working philosophy for client computers as well.

One thing I'd say to anyone following this is that if you have the ability, then definitley connect your new/destination SSD via SATA and do the clone from there rather than a USB hub as I've found it MUCH quicker (less than an hour doe 500GB drive) than in the video using a USB type hub (I have one, too). Once the clone is done, I simpy detach the old HDD and plug in the new SSD to the same port as the previous drive on the Motherboard (I'm not even sure that's necessary, but I guess it's minor OCD or something).

I did it again without it and still used sector by sector transfer and all my partitions on the 1TB Drive were perfectly cloned, including the three Windows partitions. Swapped the Drives and at first boot all great. Good speed improvements and a lot more snappy. Spending up to $40 for one time use is a bummer, but you get a lot of backup options. This is a nice introduction to cloning drives for backups or just switching drives in your current pc. However, there are plenty of steps that are fairly important that are not covered here. I'll go over the most basic ones that I can think of atm: 1. If you are moving to a different pc after the clone, make sure you have csm etc. the same as on the originating pc. 2. Do a chkdsk and preferably an sfc after cloning the drive, externally or live. Most cloning software will que a chkdsk on the clone if it detects a Windows installation, so don't panic if you get a "Fixing your drive" etc on the first boot of the clone. 3. Make sure that Windows is activated after cloning, sometimes it gets a bit fussy with new hardware, just run the troubleshooter under the activation tab. This works more than 50% of the time. If it doesn't odds are good you might just have to get a new Windows key. 4. Even though this is a 'perfect' clone, there are going to be plenty of software that are going to want it's license re-activated. Make sure you have prepared everything you need for that. 5. Rarely the clone simply won't boot. This is rare, but it does happen. This can be fixed by remaking the bootsector manually. I won't go over how to do that here, but hirens bootcd PE is your friend. 6. NEVER wipe your original drive until you are sure everything is in order on the clone. 7. No cloning software, not even the enterprise versions, guarantees that the original drive will boot after this, especially if you are doing your cloning externally from the OS. The best way to avoid this is to force a bit-by-bit clone. That will take much longer than the other methods(it might be faster to just try and do two normal cloning attempts), but it is a more 'stable' solution, I do not know of a free piece of software that supports this though. (This is extremely rare, for the thousands of clones I've done in my career it might've happened two or three times, but it is a royal pain when it does.) I guess these were mostly not steps per sé, but rather tips and warnings. Would love to see a follow-up video on this, for troubleshooting a non-booting OS clone. It is a great video though, since a lot of people are unaware things like this can be done quite easily and if anything Windows 10 is easier to clone and get running than 7 or 8.

@Kushagra Sharma I'd recommend taking a look at Clonezilla, been a while since I used it, but it should be capable of rebuilding grub and other bootloaders. I think it still supports bit-by-bit, so thats always an option if it has troubles with your bootloaders. I am assuming you can handle the general wonkiness of it though :)

I just finished replacing the 2.5" spinny hard drive in a laptop with a larger-capacity SSD. I tried to clone the hard drive to the SSD with Acronis True Image (recommended by the SSD manufacturer), but it kept failing at the very end of the cloning of the C: partition. Then I tried AOMEI Backupper, and discovered that *its* *disk-clone* *feature* *isn't* *free* *anymore.* Then I tried Macrium Reflect, and it nailed it. It took me a little while to find Macrium Reflect's disk-clone function, but once I found it the process was cake. After replacing the hard drive with the SSD, I used AOMEI Partition Assistant to assign the unused space to the C: partition. The entire process of running Macrium Reflect, doing the drive swap and running AOMEI Partition Assistant took about 4.5 hours.

Just got my first m.2 drive, a crucial 1tb. I originally watched this video in 2020 and downloaded all the software when I watched it because I knew I'd upgrade sometime. After rewatching the video now I felt comfortable doing this. However after installing the cloning software I let it update to the newest version. This now seems to be paywalled in the newer version of the software. BUT after uninstalling ver. 6.7 and reinstalling version 6.3 I successfully cloned my sata ssd to my new nvme on windows 11. So if you're trying to do this now, try to get the older version of the software and it should work.

@@aviroblox6624 but that's pretty much all you can do. With aomei partition assistant, you can move partitions from one drive to another. Especially useful if, like a dum dum(yes, I've been that dum dum), you originally installed windows while all of your drives were connected. Why is that an issue? Windows likes to put the boot manager partition on a different drive from the OS partition's drive. And if the two partitions are not on the same drive, cloning suddenly becomes a hideous p.i.t.a.

WOW! Even with the version difference, this video showed me enough to feel confident enough to do it myself. The drive I was dupping was the root C:\ so Aomie rebotted into PT mode and copied the drive with no extra boot disks kludging about my nerd pit. Once the 300 gigs were cloned (took about 40 mins) from HDD to NVMe ir spammed into boot order and selected my new C drive - so perfect I was not sure it worked. After some system searvhing and my handy Drives manager widget, I knew with confidence that the NVMe was not only new, but bmy boot up went from a snails pace to checkered flag on race day. Thanks Jay!!!!!

Guys, for those having problems with paywall before even clone once. maybe its because your new ssd isnt initialized yet. if you cant see it on windows that means its not. go to disk management, initialize your ssd into GPT then assign a drive letter to it. it will format as NTFS after that its ready to be used for cloning. thank me later if this helps.
