So growing up and watching the movie with my mom we've never seen the ending as romantic. Them deciding to coexist as equals and friends has always been my take away. It's interesting to see other people take it as romantic. There's no dramatic hugs, kisses, touching just the agreement that they are fond of each other, especially considering that Eliza shows little to no inclination of wanting romance or marriage from anyone and neither does Henry.

The idea behind Higgins having any feelings for Eliza was inspired by the way the final line of the play always sounded ironic in order to work as a punchline - Higgins yelling, "Freddy?!...FREDDY?!"

In the play the musical’s based on Eliza and Freddie settle down and own a flower shop together.
@r0se_lu4 жыл бұрын
As someone who did a school production of this, i can confirm this is extremely accurate
@jennynoelle67824 жыл бұрын
My Fair Lady is basically a musical version of the play Pygmalion (by George Bernard Shaw), with many of the lines ripped straight from it. However, the ending is different. Eliza chooses to marry Freddy and opens a flower shop, like she had always intended - though, she does continue her relationships with Pickering (he helps her open the shop) and Higgins (their relationship never improves). The play shares it's name with the Greek myth of Pygmalion. It's a story about a sculptor who, uninterested in women who possess personalities or intelligence, creates his perfect woman... out of stone. She's so perfect, in fact, that he begs Aphrodite to bring her to life so he can marry her. The myth abruptly ends with the statue being brought to life, leaving the listener to wonder if the pair could ever truly be happy.

Fun fact: I was a huge Gleek before entering the musical theatre world, and since they sang a version of " The Rain in Spain", I thought that that was how the original also went. (FIY, the one in Glee is a rock version) It wasn't until a few years later that I actually found out the actual song wasn't like that.

Idk if anyone else has mentioned this yet, but I think that in the original play My Fair Lady was based on (Pygmalion), Eliza and Henry *didn't* end up together and she stayed with Freddy, which is why their romance feels so out of place in the musical. The author of the original, George Bernard Shaw, was kinda upset about this change because he felt having them end up together defeated the purpose of Eliza's character arc, but apparently everyone was shipping Eliza and Henry anyways so the musical writers changed it. Also this vid was DOPE

Actually Eliza said she loved him not as a lover but as a friend, they simply become great friends as while they have feelings each other the feelings aren't romantic. Edit: Maybe it's that way in the musical.... I just watched the movie. She left Freddy because while he's sweet and loves her genuinely it isn't mutual.

2:00 oh no, you're right here, I just had to read "Pygmalion" because highschool hates children's love of reading , which is the play that My Fair Lady is based upond and the author first of all, hated musicals and made it that no musical can be made about his play until he died (My Fair Lady magically appeared 14 years later) and second of all, wanted the ending with Eliza going off on her own all independent like but because you know the whole she was a women in 1900's it wasn't allowed. So yeah, that whole romance, definitely shoved. (Sorry for the essay I just gotta get rid of this knowledge since it'll be useless in 6months time)
